  1. @pinoysoc I’ve been looking again at the results page and the earliest I could find in 2017 was January 13th! So you can probably relax for now ...
  2. It’s so important to remember that *none of us* know what might happen! Your stats are one part of your application but so is your writing sample, the letters of recommendation and the statement of purpose. Chin up everyone, we won’t know how everything shakes out til April 15th so we might as well be positive now!
  3. This was me! I worry that we might have delays because of this ... having said that I just checked the Yale stats page and in 2015 they had 225 applications and 4 admits, so maybe it’s not super unusual for top schools?
  4. So how much faith is everyone putting in the previous years results dates? Because according to those I won’t hear anything at the earliest til late Jan, which for me is very reassuring!
  5. Thank you @qeta that is very sweet of you to say! However I think we all have the same insecurities and none of us really know what they’re looking for, so I am holding out for good news for you too!
  6. You’re welcome @qeta! Hoping that we all share news from the adcomms as it comes in ... it’s internet karma right? @2733amh interesting group of schools! Are you applying for sociology at all of them, and is Georgetown a JD?
  7. Morning! Happy new year My advice from working for an NGO in their research team is: - get as much stats experience as you can - either through courses or general reading (but ideally courses so you can document it). If you are starting to look at your thesis, can you incorporate quant/statistical methods rather than pure qualitative? Qualitative research positions seem to be rarer so quant experience helps. - learn programming. We use SPSS so I learned that, I’m not familiar with R or Python right now but if you have opportunities to learn, take them! You will probably never has any much access to people who know this stuff apart from at university so make the most of it and see if there are any short courses in or out of your department that might be useful. I would also say that while this forum is helpful, this is something to raise both with your advisors and people in the department, and your university’s career service. They will be the best people to advice what kind of courses and background you will need, and give more tailored advice based on what they know about your skills already.
  8. I worked until last week for the research team of an NGO, based in country. Hoping for something similar!
  9. Unluckily I’m actually looking for jobs as well as waiting for PhD results so I’m in limbo for both! Just came back from nine months overseas though so seeing friends and family has been a lot of fun. I have to say that I spend more time than is wise thinking about all the “what ifs” ... I’m on holiday when most of my results are predicted to come out (based on previous years) which will either be a huge celebration or commiseration either way!
  10. Hi again! Wisconsin-Madison came back to me and said it was fine, they were still sorting out the received documents so no need to worry. They did say they had 250+ applicants ? and that decisions would be made around early Feb.
  11. Having a bit of a mare everyone! One of my schools requested official transcripts, which were due with the application on 15th December. I’ve submitted the app about a month ago and just moved country yesterday, so assumed everything had gone okay and was too busy to check everything. However when I checked the portal today I saw that they haven’t received the official transcripts, but the other university that requested them from me has. I’ve emailed the graduate coordinator who is (obviously!) on leave now for Christmas to ask her to confirm if they actually haven’t arrived or whether the portal is wrong, but will this harm my application? I’m pretty nervous but I know some schools are more flexible than others on this and I hope the department might be more forgiving than others when I explain everything??
  12. I definitely hate the waiting game, but I'm also pretty happy that we don't have to worry about interviews over Christmas! I am going to keep reading around my subjects but take some time to relax too ... plus, we will start hearing back in only a month or so (I think Emory sends its first invites to interviews around mid-January, based on previous years!) so it's not too far away ...
  13. So this topic is super quiet ... hope everyone got their applications in on time!
  14. Quick question for the group (because I'm off work and therefore hugely thinking about grad school AGAIN) - is anyone else an overseas applicant? How do you think this might help/hinder our applications? I'm not too worried because my POIs are really positive ... but also, does it make a difference?
  15. Hey, hope you don't take this the wrong way, but are you in the right forum? Unless you work in a Sociology lab, in which case, that sounds like a fun place! How are you using your Chemistry degree for sociology if you are applying for Soc degrees?
  16. Hi Coffentv, when are your apps due? Happy to read yours but not sure I'll have time before Friday which I think is the first deadline for most people ...
  17. I think it depends on whether you've been talking to them before. I had phone calls / detailed email correspondence with 3 people (different universities) before applying, and in my SoPs for those places, I specifically wrote things like, "I spoke to Prof X who works on Y topic, and they are willing to work with me on Z project if successful" (well, it's better worded than that, but you get the idea!). So that they aren't suddenly surprised by the head of adcomm asking them about it, I sent them my SoPs on with a very polite note saying thanks for your support, hope to speak to you in the future. I had really positive responses from that, so if you think it's something that they would appreciate, I would go ahead and make contact - but keep it brief and make it relevant.
  18. @soc4315 thanks for sharing! I agree that doing an MA first is really helpful, though it's very different in the UK - we don't really have MA funding so the application process is slightly different. I could not have put together an application for a PhD when I graduated from my undergrad six years ago! Question for everyone - I haven't seen anywhere ask for interviews except for Emory, but on the forums a while ago someone posted about Yale interviews. Are you all expecting to interview before acceptances or is that rare? I thought it was rare but I'm now unsure ...
  19. Also, to everyone who is yet to submit - I can tell you now it is the best feeling to know that it's over! Until the dreams begin that your top choice school has accepted you, which makes waking up so cruel! ?
  20. Hey! Interested to see that you've been through this before and didn't take up offers last time. Can I ask what made you decide to not take your places last year?
  21. Hey, You might find this helpful as a lot of people have submitted in there! mine are all in my signature.
  22. Hi! I can't speak for all universities but I think that a few of the ones I've applied to covered this in their FAQ section. I think the consensus was that you should apply with a single-authored paper, even from outside your field, because then they know exactly what is "yours" within the writing sample. And I think a lot of people change focus, what matters is the ability to write well, synthesise complex ideas, argue persuasively - all of which you can demonstrate in a history thesis.
  23. Commenting to follow as I have a MSc from a UK university (though I'm applying to US schools). If anyone has any thoughts on the transition, I'd love to hear them!
  24. Hey! Advice needed please! I have submitted my SoP for an application and have realised I mentioned an article which I have not referenced. On all my other statements I've made broad references to theorists (like, "in line with Foucault ..." etc) so haven't referenced any specific works, but on this one I mentioned a very specific author and summarised her work in the text. However I forgot to add an official reference at the end and I feel like I should have done. Two questions: 1. Should I have referenced it and will this count against me? I'm really worried it will but also maybe they'll just ignore it as it's a summary of work rather than a formal essay? 2. If it will, will it count more against me if I email the graduate administrator and ask to switch my statement? I'm worried that could count more against me if they think I'm still changing my SoP. Thanks, Amelia
  25. Thanks @Jay.B! Good luck to you too, where are you applying? What are your interests? I've kind of betrayed this forum by applying for Sociology over Gender Studies (except for one program) ...
