  1. Hey! I'm afraid that I really can't offer any advice except that if you can upload it all by 1st, I'd definitely do so! And I'm not sure that anyone on this forum can either, it seems like a question for the department directly. Could you email the administrator back and confirm? Like, "Thanks for letting me know. I'm keen to make sure that I put together a great application and want to double check which documents exactly are required by the 1st? Is that XYZ or just ABC?" Good luck! A
  2. Have submitted 4 out of my 6 applications and about to submit my 5th tonight, with only my SoP for number 6 to finalise ... anyone out there also nearly finished? I'm so ready for this to be done Good luck to anyone still writing theirs!
  3. Thanks both! Yes, 5-10 sounds like good advice. I think for my own sanity I will stick to the 6 I have for now - the 7th program's deadline is in January so I'll see how I feel after a couple of weeks break. I don't have a waiver - unfortunately international students don't get offered waivers, even if I am working for very little in international development!
  4. @pinoysoc Congrats! Submitting applications is stressful, it's really great that you've finished though. It sounds like you have a good background, even if you don't like your GRE scores, so hopefully you can focus on the positives, there's nothing you can do now General question for everyone: I'm applying for six universities and think I have a great shot at 3 and an okay shot at the others. Is six enough? I know you only need one acceptance but I'm on the fence about another university (not a great placement record, but good faculty in my field) and I could probably put an application together. It'd be my 7th choice but I'd go if they accepted me and the funding was good. But maybe six is okay? My choices are really spread across the top 30 as well - this would be the lowest ranked of all my choices, so could act as a safety school. How many is everyone else applying to? Am I worrying over nothing?
  5. Very much so! In fact I've ruled out a couple of heavy-quant programmes (Princeton requires you to write a publication level quant-based paper, so I discounted there for example). I'm glad to hear that you think the programmes are suitable, it's just so tough to work out which top-tier schools might accept me. Thanks for commenting
  6. Hello! I'm applying to Sociology this year (with one Gender Studies program) with interests in embodiment, contraceptives and reproductive health, and how people make health decisions based on cultural/social/technological influences (very broad but I don't want to go into too much detail here!). I have a good undergrad degree in History from Oxbridge, a distinction in my sociology MSc from top London university, and I'm currently working as a public health researcher in sub-Saharan Africa (have been in the sector for 2.5 years). As an international applicant this process has been very long and drawn out for me but I think I'm finally getting there ... My question for the forum is really about the GRE. I have 168V, 154Q and 6A. I'm applying to UW-Madison, Emory and UC Berkeley at the moment and would like to add Columbia, Yale and Brown as they all have overlapping interests and faculty in my area. What do you think of my chances with those scores? My GPA is somewhere around 3.8 based on online conversions, and I've had good advice from faculty in both the UK and US on my SoP and writing samples so I'm (relatively) happy with those. I'm also taking an online stats course at the moment which I've mentioned in the SoP to make up for the GRE quant scores. Any thoughts?
  7. Hey @bumbleblu! Interesting question. Have you reached out to any faculty at all at U of Az? I've spoken to a few faculty members by email/skype at all the schools I'm applying to, just to get a sense of whether they think my interests fit strongly enough into their departments for me to apply. It's been really helpful as it both ruled in and ruled out a couple of places for me, so although it's made this process a lot longer, I feel more confident in applications. If you have time to reach out to a faculty member who looks like they might share some interests at U of Az, I'd probably recommend doing the same? (I'll send you a PM as well.)
  8. Hello! This might seem really early but I'm working on my grad school applications for entry next year and wanted to see if anyone else is doing the same? So far my Gender/Women's Studies options are: Emory University of Maryland University of Wisconsin-Madison (sociology) Indiana University-Bloomington University of York (UK) University of Sussex (UK) (Possibly) University of Arizona (Possibly) Western University in Canada My research interests are around embodiment, reproductive health, contraception, phenomenology, agency, contraceptives as icon/symbol of femininity - all the fun stuff! I work in development/SRHR overseas now and already have my MSc, but still not sure what my chances will be! Is anyone applying to U of Az or Western that could talk about what appeals? The course at Western would be amazing for me but I hear that London Ontario is a terrible place to live ... Also, what's a good number to apply to? The UK university applications aren't due for a while so focusing on those in the US/Canada for now! Looking forward to hearing from others! Ams
  9. Hi everyone! I'm starting to look at university applications for a potential PhD in autumn 2018 and I've come across Women's Studies and Feminist Research at Western University, Ontario. I really like the look of the program but I know that it's fairly new. Are there any Western students on here who might be able to chat about the program and how they're finding it? My interests are in linking sociology and phenomenology, especially focusing on contraceptives and reproductive technologies, so the department of WSFR seems like a good fit! Thanks Amelia
  10. Hello! I am applying for the MA in Women's Studies at the University of York, in England. My undergrad was History at Cambridge and I'm applying for a part-time MA starting September 2014. I'm then considering possibly looking into a PhD in the States, but I'd be applying in 2015 as an international student, so I'm not thinking about it too much at the moment as it is a long way off and a very detailed process! Has anyone else applied to any UK universities for entry this year or next? Amelia x
