I think part of it is being known for your research so that outlets seek you out for an op-ed. Beyond that, I find the Shorenstein Center's (out of Harvard) guidelines for op-eds to be really helpful.

We all want what is best for our friends especially when we think that they are making choices that are going to make their situation worse not better for them.  Since you mentioned that you have already talked to her about the pros and cons of changing programs and it presumably did not change her mind - I think that is all you can do.  She knows your opinion on the matter and she is choosing to change programs because of valid reasons to her. Perhaps they are not logical or make no sense or aren't going to work.  But like you have said, it's her life and it's her choice to make.
While I don't think there is anything wrong about being worried about your friend, I do think you need to respect what her decision is and stop trying to get her to see your point of view/change her mind/etc. It wasn't clear from your post whether it was one discussion or multiple discussions that you kept on having with her. If it is multiple conversations, you need to drop it. Ultimately, she doesn't need your permission to change programs and trying to convince her that she is wrong and you are right may drive a wedge in your friendship. Instead, I would ask what she needs to help her with the transition.

Are you seriously saying that women are incapable of making decisions quickly? Wow! You must know that such generalized beliefs are a clear example of the biases which you personally possess against women.
P.S. Your crude language? Precisely an example of the biases which keep women out of STEM and other male-dominated fields.

It's not the professor's job to correct your grammar. That's when you hire or work with a copyeditor. If you're that concerned about your English grammar/writing up front, why not start working with someone in the writing center to improve your skills? I'd also share your concerns with the professor.

My two cents: if you think the program is good enough, and there are people you see yourself working with there, I'd go for the program that won't make you go into debt.

rising_star reacted to FishNerd in Tips for preparing/practicing for seminar length (~45min) presentation?
I just wanted to update and say that everyone's tips really helped me in pulling together a really good, solid seminar this past week! Everyone who I've talked to complimented my presentation so I guess it went pretty well. I think the only thing I could have done better was to have maybe have had one more day of practice, but unfortunately less than 48 hours before my presentation my PowerPoint turned all my pictures into red X-es so that unforeseen mishap took away a few hours I had been planning on practicing during (and I had some personal stuff come up that previous week that made me less productive than planned and meant that I was doing final practice runs later than I had planned on). I think the tips on focusing on practicing and fine-tuning the rough areas/slides were the most helpful because that meant that I definitely felt fairly comfortable on those and it meant that I wasn't practicing the whole presentation over and over and over.
I should also say that I successfully defended my masters thesis with my committee on Friday! Now I just have to modify my seminar into an ~25 min presentation that we need to give in front of the people who helped fund and provide permits for the project for this upcoming week. Hooray!

To me, this is a description of one of the ways gender discrimination is indeed happening in STEM settings. We (well, the people in power) get to decide how STEM settings work and the choice to organize them in ways that favour traditionally masculine qualities is one of the ways discrimination manifests itself. And when the field (especially the group of people in power, which are often more senior) is over-represented in one gender, it creates possibilites for that gender to choose to favour traits that they have themselves instead of valuing diversity/differences.

Honestly, you can handle it if you want to. My mom started her PhD after having me (I'm the youngest of 3). Did it take her longer than some of peers? Absolutely. But she finished and had a career based on her doctorate outside academia. I would be clear with prospective advisors that you have a family and gauge their reaction (if possible through an in person conversation if you're near there anyway). That way, you know if they'll be understanding/supportive. If they aren't, then it will be very hard to be successful and actually complete the PhD even if you do get in.

rising_star reacted to oroanthro in Stressed about dismal thesis funds at admits
I want to second what rising_star said. Most MA programs (especially in anthropology and related fields) don't have that much funding for summer research. A lot don't fund at all! I funded both of my MA theses with grants related to what I wanted to do--for example, arts councils, oral history, folklore and language grants, plus additional grants to pay for transcribing and archiving my interviews. For my first MA, I got hired by a cultural/human rights organization near the community I was working with, which not only helped me financially but also  let me practice applying anthropological solutions to real world issues. At my second program, I found that the Graduate Student Senate had small travel grants available every year that covered all of my summer travel and conference expenses. (By the way, that second MA was supposed to be a fully funded PhD but the department "lost" its funding for cultural anth students halfway through my program...proof that even the best funding offers are not guaranteed).  I guess my point is this: think outside the anthropology department box for funding!
Finally,  if your goal is to go on to a PhD, you should get used to applying for different grants, awards and fellowships now.  Knowing how to find and apply for funds constitutes an important set of skills that will be valuable to you for the rest of your academic career. As you go forward, I think you'll find that even those programs or offers that are "fully funded" will give you just enough money to live on. It is really important to know how to state and restate the importance of your research for different audiences all the time and to constantly be on the lookout for new opportunities to fund your research or make your life a little easier.
