    Hey all,
I was awarded CGS. Second time applying, did not make the final round last year. This time I had way more people review my application and applied to a committee that better matched my bibliography (I'm in an Interdisciplinary program). I have a lot of experience outside academia and that boosted my score I think. Keep applying, I know the disappointment is rough.
    Committee: 767-3A
    Score: 10.78 / 12
    Rank: 5/151
    Last funded application: 9.03/12

Unsuccessful from 752-5B at 8.91/12, cut off was 9.24 for my committee!
But, hey, its my first time applying, and getting my application forwarded was pretty cool!

Blah, looks like I'll be applying again in the fall!
Weirdly, my committee was split into (at least) 3 sub-committees (my friend in my cohort was put in a different one) and my subcommittee had a significantly higher cutoff score for the last funded application than theirs (9.75 vs 9.15). Makes it even more painful that my score would have gotten me in easy in a different sub-committee!
    Third time's the charm? Hopefully?

Got the SSHRC CGS-D this year!
Will be declining it though, as I won the Vanier. Posting to help those on the waitlist!

You're a saint!!!  I tried that earlier with the resetting of the password but it just took me to that "access denied screen" until YOU provided the missing info!

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a show to put on in the background as I click this link over and over again all night?

I've been around a few graduate students under 23 who have struggled massively with the workload, responsibility, and maturity required to engage and be successful. I have had to ask myself serious questions as to what made them suitable for acceptance. The more unprepared students allowed into a programme, the more the programme becomes diluted in terms of complexity and intellectual demand and concentrated in terms of quantity of work. I've encountered a fair amount of basic busy work and my classes are largely unrewarding, but perhaps that is demonstrative of my programme, even though friends at other programmes say their experience is very similar.
I think that students are better prepared for grad school if they've lived and worked in the real world for a while. You get to see how much of grad school is self-important posturing. It's interesting how sheltered individuals are who have spent their lives in academia. It is a rich and fertile ground for nurturing narcissism, encouraging obsession with politics and reputation, taking yourself super seriously, and doing things for the sake of establishing a career instead of contributing to the field, something I see as the essence of any doctoral programme.
It's easier to get along with faculty when you are 'non-traditional'. Many seem pleasantly surprised and refreshed by a student who is autonomous, challenging, and highly engaged. Then there are some who just want you to be quiet and do as you're told. It's clear that they're very accustomed to dealing with children but not other adults.
But hey, I didn't start undergrad until 30, so my experience has been different the entire journey.

Piagetsky reacted to Clinapp2017 in Are online Neuroscience PHD programs valid (worth) and well recognized?
    Short answer: no.

Why would an online program be worth it when so many aspects of neuroscience, in particular, require in-person work (e.g., rat research, human studies, etc.)? Sounds like you already have a good career so just keep on doing that I would say unless you have a lot of money to burn. I think some good  CEU courses/conferences would be much better if you just want to learn new things.

Last year I was trounced with a low 7 score and it hit me hard. I hit the grind and doubled the length of my CV in the intervening year, and this time I got a 16/20 and a CGS D. It feels like a narrow victory, but now I have a moment of peace that, dare I say it, feels earned.

    hello everyone,
so sorry for those who didn't get it. i am at mcgill where they also inform students who won. i'm waiting still and have not heard from sshrc.
anyhow, just wanted to say that sshrc is not only incompetent (how difficult is it to send some 2000 results over 2-3 hours?) but also unethical to do this. and that these competitions are entirely arbitrary and sometimes really it just depends on whether your committee had breakfast or no.

Will let you know but not feeling too hopeful. Friday was a lot of Bombardier announcements. Cruel and unusual punishment if they did that on purpose. I'd have some feedback for them on the mental stress for students waiting.

My results were finally posted. If anyone wants to commiserate, I understand. Whatever it is, SSHRC seems to have very different criteria than most other granting agencies. So, if you got rejected don't despair. In my experience, success with SSHRC doesn't  correlate to success elsewhere.

I'm a PhD candidate (year 4) and this was my last year to apply. Thankfully, I don't really need SSHRC this year. I managed to get a 48 000 CAD scholarship from a Japanese granting agency for the next academic year, and I had 45 000 CAD from an American agency this past academic year. Prior to those major grants, I've had over 20 000 CAD in small grants from outside agencies. My applications have been well received by the SSRC, Japan Foundation, JSPS, among others.

I'm not saying this to brag but to show that SSHRC must have some baffling criteria. This is the first time I've actually gotten a numbered score -- the previous three attempts I didn't make SSHRC's first cut. Now, I am blessed with a number: 6.5/20 !

Yes. It doesn't make sense to be honest.
Last year, I got a Vanier but did not get FRQSC. For the exact same research project. So congrats you everyone who got the award and for those who did not, please please please don't take it personally or as a reflection of your worth and potential in academia.

    Thank you! So excited.
Thinking mostly of applicants in future years who might trawl through this thread, I hope it might be useful to document my "journey" with SSHRC.
    2014-15: SSHRC CGS-M Waitlisted, unsuccessful.
2015-16 SSHRC CGS-M Successful: Rewrote application entirely.
2019-20: SSHRC CGS-D Rejected: Direct applicant, not yet accepted to school at time of application.
2019-20: OGS Successful: Using trimmed version of CGS-D .
2020-21: SSHRC CGS-D Successful: Institutional applicant, applied during first year of doctorate. Rewrote application entirely, this time with help from many profs in my dept and university SSHRC-writing workshops. In terms of CV changes since previous application, the only major change is that I had won OGS and been accepted to my program. Score of 17.5/20 - but last year I got 9/20!
I was really crushed by those past rejections, and things could have easily turned out differently this round if my adjudicators had had a different food for breakfast. It's all a roll of the dice, except that no matter what we get stronger, more confident, and more fully formed as we go through iterations. For those who have gotten (or will get) rejections/waitlisted, I feel you so so keenly and I hope my data points are another assurance that your work will ultimately pay off.

My university just emailed to say I got the CGS-D Bombardier. I got waitlisted last year and am completely shocked/thrilled and will probably spend the next few hours sobbing with relief. My university is cutting some funding programs so was anticipating some very lean years otherwise or possibly having to drop out for a while.
