  1. Okay, hypothetical question for you guys... Would you say it is more beneficial to be a top-performer at a mid-ranking program or an average performer at a top-ranking program? This is something I've been wondering about job placement in regard to the OP's question. Will a top-performer from a well-known but not as highly-ranked program still have good job prospects compared to an average-performer from a school with a good name? Does name carry more weight than the quality of work? Some people who get into these really high-ranking programs aren't going to do as well as they are expected to based on whatever formula schools use to grant admission; it's been discussed in these and other forums before.
  2. Is that something I can do now or do I have to wait until I quit my job and am enrolled?
  3. I submitted my FAFSA and a few days later before my FAFSA was processed, I received my funding package that covers tuition and I have a stipend that is enough to live on. In that case, does the FAFSA even matter? I don't plan on taking out loans so will it really change anything? I was working full-time this past year but I won't be in grad school. Should I fill out an income adjustment?
  4. Edit: I checked out the HP Split x2 today and also a Sony hybrid...I think I really like the split x2. I'm going to start pricing them out and saving.
  5. If someone is basing their decision on these forums, or even solely on ranking, I think they've got bigger problems than a slightly biased (although I think darth is onto something there) opinion.
  6. After talking with my resident techie (my boyfriend) I think I might look into something like the Lenovo Yoga. It IS more expensive than I'd like but he had the point that it would be a pain to try to write papers on a tablet and my laptop now is basically toast. A laptop/tablet hybrid might be my best option if I end up liking the way it feels. I want to make sure its not too bulky.
  7. Congrats!! I was sending happy vibes your way all day! Who'd you hear from?
  8. I think if I can make my laptop last long enough for anything where I'd need a laptop (like a big project or something, I don't know) it'd work for me to just get a tablet for the convenience. My main concern is finding a tablet on which I can run statistical software.
  9. I'd check the results. I'm pretty sure most of those schools have sent out some acceptances but I don't know if that's it or if more are on the way. I didn't apply to Binghampton but I know they aren't even meeting until the end of the month so don't expect decisions for a while.

I've been looking on Craigslist, a few of the property management company websites listed on Daviswiki, and the school's listing for available housing. Where else should I look? I also wonder if none are available just because it is the middle of the academic year.
  11. I'd say only if you're planning on researching the culture of snowboarding. Congrats!
  12. I'd like to bump up this thread for the 2014 cycle. I've got a 2008 Macbook that definitely won't get me through grad school. I'm not sure if I should keep it at home and get a tablet to take with me to school or if I should invest in an entirely new laptop. My Macbook crawls. I've got all of my files on an external hard-drive and it still can't run iMovie without freezing. I've done my best to clean it up myself but if I decide to keep it I'll probably have to have someone else look at it. I know it won't be able to run SPSS or other statistical software very easily so if I got a tablet I'd need it to be able to install and run software from outside of the app store. I like the idea of the Lenovo Yoga but it's a bit rich for my blood right now. I have time before I start school so I could save. Any thoughts? The work I'll be doing is largely reading, PDFs, I'd like the ability to download and read/annotate textbooks, process Word/Excel/Etc documents, print from the device, take notes, and craft papers. Any thoughts or advice from my techies out there?
  13. If you're mailing them, where did you send them? I only have the home address of one of my letter writiers. I suppose I could ask for the rest on the premise of sending a thank you note and then send my gift but I'm not sure. I've thought about hand-delivering them since my alma mater is only 2.5 hours away but I'm so awkard it might be a bad idea.

I prefer to live alone but it seems like most of the 1 bedrooms or studios I'm finding online are $900+ and I definitely can't afford that on my stipend. Any current or past Davis students know of places to look or ways to find less expensive single-person living?
  15. I think mods prefer we don't do this because it clogs up the forums. It's easier to just bump up an old post.
  16. I emailed UW out of curiousity and this is what I was told: They sent out initial acceptances already but they're in the process of finalizing acceptances. It sounds like a few more people will be admitted. Then they'll form a waitlist and notify those people. Only then will rejections go out, they suspect by the end of the month. I know not all schools do it this way but I'm sure a good bunch of them do.
  17. Vegan corndogs...yes. Just yes.
  18. Might be a bit early but I'm impatient I'm sure some people already have an idea of where they'll be going even if they haven't officially accepted yet. I'm 99% certain I'll be at UC Davis next year and I'm pretty excited about it.
  19. I got my first acceptance nearly a week after everyone posted on here they had been admitted. You still have hope! Good luck!
  20. Thanks for the info. I'm still surprised there weren't more GC posters in that pool. Only 2-3 acceptances so far.

I wondered the same thing about living in Sacramento just to save some money (I'm not from the area orginially) but a friend of mine did her undergrad at Davis and said that trying to commute on the causeway would be a huge pain the backside. I do have a car so I might look a little further out than central Davis in order to cut some costs. When push comes to shove, I'll do what I have to to make my stipend work. I've heard a lot of people say that they don't end up being that close with their cohort anyway so you might not miss out? Just depends what you want out of it. If you're just there for the degree then commuting probably won't be a problem.
  22. It's been strangely quiet so far this week. I was expecting a bit more noise!
  23. I think typically it is a reimbursement. They don't just give you $800 in cash. They want you to submit receipts and such and then they'll reimburse you for "up to $800" of those expenses. If you end up spending less, they will only give you what it cost. It could be different at your program, but that's what I've seen.
