  1. not all psychology is studied for the purpose of treating patients. a lot of it is done in conjunction with advertising or research surrounding the brain and how it works (neuropsychology for example). some of it is concerned with teaching computers to think more like humans (psychology/philosophy of artificial intelligence) and still more is concerned with the differences in how different species think. Considering how fathomless the mind can be it doesn't really seem that strange to me. then again, I was born and raised here.
  2. I sooooooooooooooooo wish I could. I wouldn't be able to afford to live here (NYC) if I did though. Instead I'm applying to jobs that won't make me want to melt my face off (or at least will pay me more money than this one does) and looking forward to summer because my second job is actually a lot of fun.
  3. I've seen one or two programs for Fan and Audience Studies which I'm strongly considering applying to next go around.
  4. I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts... deedely dee

  5. apparently it had something to do with lack of core professors, according to the administrator there. I guess maybe a bunch of profs are retiring/leaving/going on sabbatical, or something.
  6. You get your first response from one of the schools you applied to And it's earlier than you anticipated and you're really excited because early usually means acceptance and the letter says they aren't accepting ANY students but at least they're sending your fee back...
  7. I feel you. My SO has his MFA in film and we've only been living in NYC for about a year while he looks for work. He's had one TV gig and a few commercials and sporting events. The season ended in the fall and he's been struggling for a month or two and his family is all "MOVE TO BALTIMORE AND WORK FOR YOUR COUSIN WHO OWNS A BAR" or "MOVE TO COLORADO AND COME LIVE NEAR (note, not *with*, but near) YOUR DAD" etc. etc. Meanwhile they conveniently forget that I just applied to a bunch of six year programs here... but anyway.
  8. working a stupid stupid job while my brain slowly atrophies and praying to god(s?) that one of my letters is a yes so I can GTFO. knowing they probably won't be a yes and trying to figure out what I can to do to make it a yes next time.
  9. Now Berkely College with this interesting tidbit: "Based on its total number of international students, Berkely is ranked No. 6 among specialized institutions in the U.S...." how do those two things have anything to do with each other? and that's a whole ad predicated on the fact that the school couldn't make it into the top 5?
  10. weight watchers. my BMI indicates that I am just short of underweight. then again, considering this country's obsession with weight loss, maybe that point isn't relevant.
  11. lol, angua I love your signature. have you played mass effect? it reminds me of Mordin's "Scientist Salarian" song.
  12. didn't even think what it would mean for students in the program. sort of makes me feel like I dodged a bullet!
  13. I know this is old but me too! where'd you go to school?
  14. when I graduated from the schools where my LORs teach, I got them each a really nice book that was germaine to their expertise (one was a collection of famous playbills in a really nice hardbound book, another was a history of musical theatre, I think). I might send them each a little something when I find out for sure where I'm going (so I can include that in the note). otherwise, my written thanks will have to suffice. I'm poor.
  15. I'm lurking, though not MFA applicant. playbyplay did you talk to ETS yet? I'm curious as to how they'll respond.
  16. I am waiting to hear back from Columbia. They are my first choice so if I get in, hopefully I'll be able to give you the run-down
  17. Just thought I would post this tidbit. Just got a letter from UCLA saying that my department is "unexpectedly unable to consider any applications for the upcoming year" so, not exactly a rejection, since it seems like they haven't even reviewed any apps, but obviously not an acceptance. the nice thing is, they're refunding my app fee. Anyone had anything like this happen before? any guesses as to why this happened? I'm thinking they didn't get funding or something. I'm surprisingly not upset. Moving to LA would have been quite the logistical nightmare and out of my three apps, UCLA was my "safety" (I mean... it's still UCLA, so there's nothing safe about it, but it wasn't my 1st or 2nd choice). Anyway, I thought this was weird enough to share.
