I would love to play, but I suck at this game as I just haven't seen enough movies. :/ I'd have to cheat.

Fall 2014 applicants for theater/performance Ph. D.?
roguesenna replied to PageAndStage's topic in Performing
good luck potential CUNY students! -
Savannah College of Art and Design. I do not reccommend it. Especially not for playwrights. Maybe as a safety school for those who are more interested in screenwriting than playwriting. I will give it one thing, it wasn't hard to get in.

Well the idea is that we could split the difference and live half way between Hollywood (where BF would mostly be working) and the school. Is it that far away that you think that's unrealistic? [edit:] oh wow. Just looked it up again, don't know how I thought that was closer. It's definitely out of range. Thanks for the heads up. Santa Barbara might be worth it though. At least as a maybe. [edit again!] I figured it out! At some point I got UC Berkely confused with UC Irvine. heheh oops.

All my FB friends are being accepted AUGH!
roguesenna replied to roguesenna's topic in Waiting it Out
theoretically your point is still solid, yeah. In fact considering I'm multiracial and most of my PhD Accepted friends are white, it goes that much futher. I'm just annoyed with the people who claim that there's no *possible* way that Macklemore actually deserved the award and that the only reason he won is because he's a popular white rapper and blah blah blah. Not denying there is racial privelege out there and also not denying that the Grammys may include institutionalized racism (I don't really know much about the grammys, honestly, so I can't aruge either way). But I think there's a lot of emotion mixed into most people's arguments on this topic therefore I can't take them seriously as objective analysts of the situation. I actually tend to vent and gripe a lot on Facebook too, so long as I know the subject of my venting/griping/ranting/whatever can't read my FB. But to be fair, I might use it way differently than other people. When i first started using it, only my college friends could even see my profile. (I actually had an RA tell me during orientation "You gotta check out this new thing called Facebook! You can see people's relationship status!") That said, you're right, there probably is a reporting bias. -

Hey, Thinking about my next cycle (if/when I get roundly rejected) and trying to decide what schools to add to the mix. I only applied to three this year and I want to increase my options by investigating a few more schools. However, my boyfriend (of 4 years, it's serious, but we don't have the money to get married yet) is in film and TV and can pretty much only work in NY or LA. Thus, I need to primarily locate schools that are within about an hour's commute of either of those two cities. So far I have: NYU Columbia CUNY UCLA UC Berkley UC Irvine Anybody have any others to add?

How Are You Coping With The Torture Of Waiting???
roguesenna replied to PsycD's topic in Waiting it Out
LOL. I've been playing SIMS 3 and I got the University Life expansion so at least if I don't get in, my Sim will. I know. I'm a sad sad dork. same boat here. my 3rd school which I thought was my safety emailed me really really early to say they weren't accepting any students, so now its down to my two equally wonderful top choices. They're SO hard to get into though that I'm really afraid it's going to be the solid rejection all the way around. -

Just venting. It's like babies and marriages. Now lately all I'm seeing on my facebook feed are PhD acceptances and half of me is like "Awesome! congrats!" and the other half of me is like "augh why are you getting accepted and not me!!!!?!?!?!" /venting.

catching up: 1. I'm 26 now but I was 22 when I got into my MFA. I had meant to take a year off, but I graduated in spring 2009 so the job market was just SOOOO bad, I couldn't find anything and I was going crazy living with my parents. So I decided it was grad school or culinary school and grad school happened. 2. I've written a LOT of 10 minute plays. I like to experiment with form. Of my last two plays, one was a one-act farce (which will never be produced again because the set requirements are stupid -- it is a farce after all). The other was a short full-length (about 60ish pages) in which I tried to preserve the Aristetotilian whatchamacallits. You know, conservation of time, space and action. Lately, like I said, I've been writing screenplays/tv pilots and most of my ideas have been circling around epic fantasy/sci-fi and/or circus arts (because I'm also a circus freak). 3. I have a PhD app in at Columbia and haven't heard anything yet. Obviously not the same, but I guess don't panic yet.

I thought about applying to CUNY, but decided not to. I was having a really hard time with their online application and had already asked my recommenders for additional letters once (and I was broke!) so I said forget it. I'll probably apply there next time though if I don't get in. -

I would say definitely DO NOT contact professors while your application is in review. Unless you already have a solid relationship with that professor (i.e. you've been emailing back and forth, have interviewed, talked in person, etc. etc.) then it will come off as annoying and desperate. Your professor might not even be able to affect the committee's decisions and it's most likely to annoy rather than help your case. Be patient. In the case of the school you got rejected from, absolutely do not think that you are going to be able to get them to reverse their decision. That is a sure path to never ever getting into that school and getting a bad reputation within the community. If you are thinking about applying for the next cycle to the same school and you want to talk to the professor about how to make yourself a better candidate, that might be worth sending an email, but I'd give it a week or two so that it doesn't seem as strongly connected to your decision (or like you're trying to do the first thing, which is get the professor to convince the school to reverse the decision). obviously, I'm not an expert, but that's my opinion on the matter.

Zach, you're the first person to have a school in common with me. Here's hoping we both get into Columbia! -
How to decline an offer I've already accepted??
roguesenna replied to robinsparkles's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
legally, probably not. however if you put down a deposit, it's called a deposit for a reason. don't be surprised if you have a hard time getting it back. -

I would wish for someone to finance my feature film with me as executive producer. This way I would have an excellent portfolio piece ( a fully produced feature film!) that would help me get into school, I could create my magnum opus the way *I* want to do it, and I could give jobs to MANY of my friends while also using the opportunity to make connections in the industry. Yep. that's my wish. now where do we sign up?
