Hahaha! Hope you receive your results shortly!

  2. So, I'm not sure this will even get any responses, but I have a 15 page paper that I think *might* be worthy of polishing up for submission to a journal, but I've never published before so I'm not sure the first thing of how to go about it. I also don't know if the paper is journal quality -- honestly, I've read it so many times it might be a POS. Would anyone be willing to read it? It's called "I Can Take a Joke:" Humor as a Tool in Lesbian Feminist Theatre. Obviously fine-art perspectives would be appreciated. Barring that, other humanities people would be nice too. Reply or message me and I will send it to you. ----------------- If this is totally taboo and a big gradcafe faux pas, I apologize in advance.
  3. I signed up for the test about two weeks before taking it because I hadn't been sure I wanted to apply to Grad school prior to that. I had been waffling on the decision and my summer before that was insanely busy (working 70ish hours a week with 12hr days on weekends). I knew I was a good test taker since I didn't study for the ACT and scored really well on it. I also know that I'm very talented in writing and reading and that i could probably get a decent score without even trying in that section. That said, I hadn't had a math class since highschool. So I borrowed a prep book from the library and downloaded an app to my iPad with practice questions. I focused primarily on the math for practice though I did a few verbal reviews just to familiarize myself with the format. I read some questions for the AW, but didn't write any practice essays, just kind of thought about what I would write. I got 167V/158Q/5.5AW. I'm pretty pleased with that. I'll take it again for the next round and hope to improve my QR score just so I can have a higher cumulative. Maybe I'll do really well and somehow improve the VR & AW scores, but I doubt it and I won't be disappointed if I don't. As far as vocab goes, I have a pretty advanced vocabulary for someone my age (and always have), largely because I read A LOT and I use context clues to infer meaning. I did absolutely NO vocab study for the GRE (nor did I do any for the SATs or ACTs in highschool). There were probably less than five words on the test that I had never heard before. Maybe another five that I had only heard/read a few times and was a little iffy on. Here's the thing though. If you have a *good* vocabulary (not a great one, just a good one), you can frequently use process of elimination on the fill-in-the-blank questions. And with the pairing questions (i.e. What two words could fit into this blank?), you can usually get at least one of the two words just on knowledge and then eliminate the other words by knowing they don't match the first one. So yeah, vocab is good, but equally good is knowing how to acquire vocab. Which will be more useful to you in the long run than memorization anyway.

  5. I don't think the math score is too important. I got a 167V, 148Q, 5.5AW and was pretty happy with that considering I signed up for the test about two weeks before I took it and barely studied. I just feel I could do better on the math if I actually tried and even though there's not a *ton* of room for improvement in the verbal and AW sections, there's a small chance I could improve if I worked at it. I'd like to have a higher cumulative score is all. A 170 though? WOW. I'm impressed. NYU. They informed their MAs, but I think my application is taking longer because they evaluated it for PhD first. Hoping I still have a chance at the MA. should find out by Sunday according to email sent out by coordinator.
  6. someone on the results search got an interview, but I don't know if they've been active in this thread.
  7. personally I think it's travelled a little far into the ridiculous for my tastes. it's starting to be just random words smashed together.

They flew around, jealous, plotting murder, arson, etc. They were searching for hundreds of floating wildebeest. These evil bees converged into a mega bee! Zooming fiercely throughout the glen until they could find unsuspecting marsupials, the bees settled on a caribou. Meanwhile, the cat soared through the aether, gathering bundles of tiny flowers for the wildebeests' protection. The flowers glowed bright as they bled starlight. This magic was transcendental and powerful. The cat rushed to smash the evil bees, but judiciously reconsidered, quoting the great Oprah: "dfindley, look into your mirror - metaphysics don't equal universal truth!" 9. I'm not sure if it was a regular Surface, Pro or Pro 2, but my roommate bought one and returned it less than a week later to get an iPad so... yeah. Generally, I'll just say this about the Surface. Trying to make a device that is both a tablet and a computer means that it's not goign to be as good of a tablet as a tablet is, nor as good of a computer as a computer is. Tablets and computers are not the same thing, so if you're getting a hybrid just remember that you're splitting the difference and making compromises. Also, it's a windows piece of garbage, but if you like that stuff then go for it I guess.
  10. sorry to hear about UCSD, it's nice to know that you were a serious contender in such a competitive program though! I am definitely thinking about my next plan of attack. I have been pretty much since I submitted my apps in late Nov/early Dec. Since I am aiming for a PhD (not an MFA like you guys), my plan will probably differ from yours, but so far this is what I've got going: In this app round my research focus was kind of ambiguous. I have so many things that interest me I had a hard time choosing one thing, so I picked something that I though aligned well with each school and that I would have fun studying. This time I am focusing on something that has always been near and dear to me and that I have a solid history of work on -- circus arts. So branching out from there, here's my plan: learn French continue my correspondence with a certain POI (who I initiated contact with last night) who has a similar background and research specialization (though I probably won't end up at his school because I doubt my partner could find work in Montreal) retake the GREs -- this time get a math tutor and have much more time to study possibly apply to join MENSA if NYU offers me MA, take it. if no MA, then focus on volunteering at local theatre and/or circus groups read all of the relevant research I can get my hands on try to write a new paper try to publish an old paper so yeah. not sure if this is helpful to you guys, but that's my plan!
  11. no prob. Honestly, I am not anticipating getting in anywhere either. I'm thinking the most likely is that NYU offers me the MA. Which I'll probably take if I can figure out a way to afford it.
  12. "my friend Timon says, put your behind in the past!" ::shakes head:: No, Pumbaa.
  13. just totally reeked out all over a POI at a school I can probably never go to. BUT HE'S BASICALLY ME. #nerdlife

  14. nice! sounds very magical realism. I think mine is going to have a lot to do with trust and control and controlling someone's behavior through various means. I think there's going to be a lot of audience interaction, I'm just wondering how much I can get away with before the play becomes too unpredictable to produce. It's kind of weird because I think I want an audience member to be the protagonist -- at least for the first act -- and then have the play shift to the story of a different character that will be played by an actual actor. anyway, its still really mixed up and in early stages. when I get some pages I'll let people know. I know some conversational Spanish (which I really need to work on) so I could read your play at least. Though I'm definitely not expert enough to critique your Spanish. I do have a playwright/actor friend who's fluent though. If you need eyes and you can't find any.
  15. you have my attention... what is this magical midnight thingy? I just started a play(!) that will mimic the format of a role-playing video game. Trying to figure out exactly what the plot is and what characters I need besides the protagonist and "anima" character
  16. don't know. the website says MAs/MFAs can take a lot longer than PhDs so I'd say be patient as hard as it is.
