Social life in grad school compared to undergrad?
reinhard replied to Carbohydrated's topic in The Lobby
I don't know what magic my colleagues did, but it's only one week and everyone "new" is talking to each other like they are bffs while I am still lonely... -
Curry or gravy mix it with carboydrates. Hell, salsa + lentils if you must.

I've been happy with Acrobat. I can bookmark, extract, and create my own pdfs. But I like reading it on paper as well because I feel like our eyes get so adjusted on something, it's nice to change perspectives.

(nvm)

I read that as well, but my roommate told me he got his mailed to him. He is an undergrad probably different.
-
Did you get your student ID yet? Were they mailed to you?
-
Yes, it's been 3 weeks...and about to be four.

I see, I haven't paid anything yet so my payment agreement is still there on SOLAR. Did you get OGS or NSERC or something else? Maybe they don't put OGS up on there for you? Also has your admission status been cleared yet? Whenever I go into SOLAR to look at my classes, it still says my conditions hasn't been lifted and it worries me. I will not give them a single peeny until those are cleared. By the way, which of the payment options did you go with? I find it extremely annoying that they charge interest on you should you decide to pay on separate periods. They obviously know most of us are on low financial aid, so they want to suck out even more from us? I wish the payments were more like the undergrad version. You pay what you are supposed for each term.

Anyone attending Mcmaster who received the OGS? Did any info appear on your Scholarship/Award on MUGSI? I have nothing on there and my department has been silent about this...

Target Credit Card to Save 5% - Yay or Nay?
reinhard replied to Coconut Water's topic in Officially Grads
You run the risk of losing it. Give your wallet some room. I think a Costco card is the furthest i will go for store cards. -
A sleeping bag maybe?
-
Well in my department there are still some "absent" pictures...I just gotta find out how they were able to pull this off.
-
These are individual pictures not group pictures.

That thing doesn't look very comfortable if you lean back...

So I don't know if i am the only one who doesn't like the idea of my face being posted on the internet so everyone can look at me. In my department, on the 5th of September, there is a general meeting for grad students and the department wants to take a photograph of everyone so they can post it on the department's website. I am against it and I was thinking of skipping the grad orientation or be late for the photograph. I really don't like "being displayed like an animal in a zoo" (quote). I've seen in other universities some grad photos are left blank, so I am guessing I am not the first?

Writing a Letter of Recommendation for myself
reinhard replied to tomkat0789's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
For my professor, he literally changed two sentences in the letter. -

Writing a Letter of Recommendation for myself
reinhard replied to tomkat0789's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
I did it and now I am in grad school. He even sent the wrong letter to the wrong school too. He was supposed to send a letter for my funding and he used that same letter for my grad admission. They are very different letters and I still got in lol -
I think this depends on how attractive your degree is when you graduate. You should also factor in how much debt you have now and the interest rate it will build up. Would you be able to secure a job in the same town or do you have a position you are certain to hold in your own town?

One month until moving, last minute tips??
reinhard replied to oceanlover's topic in Officially Grads
Don't procrastinate... because the most bizarre things could happen before your flight. I know from experience. -
Wait...grad students use their alma mater's email??? Pretty much all the grad students in my undergrad university don't use them.

What do Ph.D holders who work in the academia call themselves? A research or a professor? One does the other, but when someone say "I am a prof", people immediately ignore the whole research aspect (at least the people I've talked with) and thinks you only teach at the university. This is of course not true. In the future, I am going to be put in the same position and I rather refer myself as "a researcher" rather than a "professor" because "prof" gives the people the idea that I am old... The same is true when I used to TA in my undergrad. I was in second year and people thought I was a grad student in my 30s...somewhat insulting considering outside of school, everyone thought I was still in high school. It would seem that certain titles adds numbers to your age.

After googling for an entire hour, I am gonna give up and ask you. Do you know if MAC has a cycling club that loan bikes? The closet I have got to so far is http://www.marauders.ca/sports/2011/5/18/Cycle_0518112619.aspx. I got troll'd hard.

Or better yet, BOTH!

Okay that is true. On more topic, I think rationally speaking my field can't do much without a Ph.D, but that is probably true everyone else in the sciences.
