I am a bit embarrassed to admit I know little about these things or my own country for all that matter (serves me right for not paying attention in social studies). All I know is that this CareCard is my magic card that gets me free medical care (or discounts). According to this brochure from the MSP, http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/msp/infoben/pdf/msp-brochure.pdf, I have to pay a premium rate since I am over 19. But what health insurance company is one enrolled in, I thought Canada has a free healthcare system? I should probably ask my father about this once he returns on time... Pertaining to my last question, what does this mean...? Charge to BC? How will this affect me? You just mean the provincial (BC) government has to deal with it right? Not me. Also since I am leaving BC, I should fill out this form https://www.health.gov.bc.ca/exforms/msp/6759fil.pdf and this form https://www.health.gov.bc.ca/exforms/msp/7062.html ? Did you have to fill those when you left BC? Also according to this http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/msp/infoben/leavingbc.html#absence, I need to contact HIBC about leaving BC. Did you do this as well when you left? So what is more advantageous move here? Get the OHIP or possibly continue to use my BC Carecard (or service card now they call it? ) for the duration of my studies? Sorry for hammering all these crazy questions at you Takeru

One of my friend has been scammed three times in BC and he is an international student and one of my non resident (PR) friend also got forced into signing a 1 year lease because of a miscommunication (technically he was deceived). That's why I am worried. That's the part I am worried about, and what I mean by 'forged'. The scammer could send a piece of paper that looks like it is from the landlord company and deceive me into giving them rent. I don't want to be that idiot when I arrive I will have all my luggage standing outside a place I don't have access too. By the way Takeru, do you know if there is a equivalent BC careCard in Ontario? The closet I've found is this http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/ohip/, I suppose I can't get one online. Do you happen to know anything else that are used in BC, but won't work in Ontario? My BC CareCard is the only thing I can think of at the moment Thanks for helping me as usual Takeru.

What if the lease they send me is forged? How do I even know that it is a legit lease? They could just photoshop or create some fancy pdf and make it look like it is a lease no? So how do I check if the lease is legit? They can put anything on there. This summer. I am planning to stay at something like this https://macoffcampus.mcmaster.ca/classifieds/8-paisley-ave-south-2/. Here the rent is $175/week (for example), so I am planning to stay at place for a week and then once I arrive in the city I will go and search for a place in person. I've thought about motels as well, but I don't eat out, ever. And there is kitchen in motels, so not happening. Besides, I am going in the summer! Probably at the end of June.

If it makes you feel better, I sent an email about my grad school results to one of my LOR back in April. He still hasn't replied to my email yet.

If they say "yes" to having friends come over and take pictures, wouldn't i be in trouble and make them suspect of me if I don't have any friends over there? Sending them the cheque seems risky, I thought I could just go there, meet the landlord, hand them the money and they give me the key. Is that not how it works? Two of my friends (international) told me that's how they did it when they came to BC. I will probably change my plans then and stay at these sublets https://macoffcampus.mcmaster.ca/classifieds/category/sublets/, they can't scam now can they?

First and Last Month's rent? So if I stay from May to say August. I have to pay for May's rent and August rent when I arrive (but not the months in between right?)?

I TA'd this course two times as an undergrad. I can tell you, most people have a lot of trouble with basic algebraic manipulation. Be fluent in those otherwise Lagrange Multipliers will haunt you at night.

Okay so this is my first time living off campus. I am a Canadian and I am moving to Ontario next month, so if you live there, maybe you could help. I am wondering over there, do landlords usually accept cheques or cash? Am I right to assume they will accept cheques from any Canadian Bank (TD, Scotia bank, etc...). I don't want to ask any landlords I am going to contact with these questions as I feel they might rip me off. I am planning to not even go to motel once I arrive and go straight into the home. Is this risky just based off pictures and conversation? Also, am I correct that in addition to advertised rent, I must pay a damage deposit? We do that in BC, Canada. Does the same apply in Ontario?

Students failing due to unawareness of requirements
reinhard replied to kateausten's topic in Teaching
Technically professors can change the weight of a student's grade if he or she feels the student deserves it. In my university it's a common practice. One of my friend missed two assignments in a math class and he he should have lost 15% of his grade. He aced the final (beating everyone else) and the prof gave him a 90 (he was supposed to have gotten an 85 for his final grade). -
LOl I am still on waitlist...

But the data usage is dependent on where and what WIFI I am using right? So if i am at school, I can still use the 50mb, but it's just slower right? Or is the disadvantage here is that I may use this on the street and if the WIFI is weak, then it would be difficult to do things like checking the bus schedule? Oh but I think all I will only do when I hook my phone up to my computer is exchange music files or image/video files. I don't think the data thing is a concern. I don't have much experience with apps and I reckon most are games, which I don't play anyways. Wait did you mean, Link 1: http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/iPhones#iphone4S_tab (the link I gave you) Link 2: http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/iPhones#iphone5c_tab (the link you gave me as the example, should note that FIDO just update this page...how convenient of them to ruin this discussion for me). For the no added benefit part, I think according to the description, I get another $5/50 MB (for the cheapest plan) or did I misread their misleading ad? Okay totally not touching this!

Applied Stats: How much math do you need?
reinhard replied to cooperstreet's topic in Mathematics and Statistics
I think to truely understand statistics and probability theory, you must take measure theory which requires real analysis. But some may disagree with me because in my department, there are many MSc stats students who don't know a thing about measure theory or real analysis. -
Look through the first few chapters of Spivak, try to do some of the problems. If you can't, don't even touch Rudin.

Were you successful getting clients? I've thought advertising myself, but I really don't believe people will pay me the amount you posted per hour.

Urgh, but they take so much time and pay so little. Not very efficient.

Anything over 15inch no longer qualifies as a "laptop". The point of a laptop is portability and convenience. I own a 13in Mac

Problems with the advisor because i am a MA student?
reinhard replied to Tsareva's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
Well is he wrong? I thought grad schools value and put more attention to Ph.D students because they have more potential to contribute to the department than a Masters Student could. That's why they get paid more for TAs right? Is that not the reason? I am an incoming Masters Student myself so I guess it's nice to know it isn't true? -
Limit on how much data I can access for free? Like downloading stuff? Serving over the net doesn't require data now does it? Like checking the bus schedule, google map, or email shouldn't require any of that right? I was just worry that I might purchase a phone that I can't connect it to my computer lol Ah okay, so that means that in that link for example. In addition to my regular phone bills, I have to pay about $19.54 each month? So if I get a phone like http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/iPhones#iphone4S_tab, where the prepayment is $0, then how much do I pay each month...? Am I asking a really stupid math question despite the fact that I am getting a math degree...? EDIT: It says it's actually a "Smart plan", whatever that is, I assume it is the same? There is also a TAB24 MAX plan, is that what you use?
-
Okay, so I am a little embarrassed to admit this, but I have a very little understanding how "smartphones" and other fancy phones work. I've been using a vocal-text only phone for years and I think it's time to switch. Right now my father is paying my FIDO phone bills, he was the one who got me the phone when I was a teen. I can't contact him now because he is overseas and extremely busy. So I have turned to the internet (you guys) for help. Now technically I can walk into the shop and ask them all about this, but I don't want to be judged and look like I've been living in a cave, and I would like any possibility of them trying to scam me into paying for things I don't need because I just know they are going to ask "would you like add this feature to your phone (will not tell you that you have to pay for it) for a limited time?" I may have to get a new contract and setup my own account, but does that mean FIDO will give me a new SIM card? Another thing I am unsure of is that my father once told me that "he added my name to his FIDO account" so that if I need to make changes to my phone, I don't need his name. The reason I brought this up is because I am not sure if I can get my own account if my name is enlisted in his account. If that's not biggie, then please read on. Personally I would like to get an Iphone because I own a Mactinosh and FIDO is doing a 2year tab24 plan and I would like access to the Internet. Now my questions are 1) Do I have to pay extra for Internet if I own a smartphone? 2) My NOKIA has an SIM card. This thing just stores memories like the music files and contact phone numbers right? Because I looking through http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/SmartCard and there are three different ones, but they all cost the same...and so is their descriptions. 3) In http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/iPhones#comparison_tab, at the bottom, if any IPhone users could help, what is the difference between a Lighting to USB Cable to a 30-pin cable? 4) If anyone could please explain what a TAB24 plan is? Is this http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/MonthlyPlans/Group2 the TAB24 plan? Thank you so much for reading and helping me.

Maybe a stapler, can someone edit this on the first page to make a list?
