whoa where did you get that stat? I was under the impression that schools dont dig to the waitlist much...I hope its true! I have many waitlists!

I got a waitlist notification from the director of graduate studies at a school on a saturday...so yes -- you can definitely hear back on the weekends!

Waitlisted at 5 programs...5 of which I like...hahaha

I was thinking about contacting one of my programs but had no idea how to go about writing such an email. What did you ask?

If anything I'm more motivated to study now. I'm taking a graduate course that I know I will have to take a prelim in within the next two years so I want to learn it all really well now to make my future easier. I'm also taking some other topics courses and independent study that relate to my potential specialization so I want to learn as much as I can before I enter grad school!

I didn't hear a response from a few schools so I emailed them and got prompt replies about waitlists. If you are really curious, try emailing the director of graduate studies for your school/department and hopefully they will respond!

My one admit so far needs me to go to a 2 week TA workshop before classes start....so I should be moved in late July if I go there! I'm taking a week trip to canada for a music festival and hopefully a road trip somewhere in the summer too. The rest of it will be spending time with my beloved home town before I have to say goodbye!

I have never pulled an all-nighter for anything. My immune system sucks and if I don't get sleep I am bound to get sick! Hopefully grad school will not force all-nighters on me haha

I'm an INFP with super high N and F! Me being a pure mathematics person definitely aligns with the "N" part.

I'm super scared as well! Mainly because I'm afraid that I won't remember any of the content I will be teaching. I will probably be TA-ing for a calculus class or something next semester and I haven't messed with that stuff in a while but the public speaking aspect is definitely another issue haha.

I took a nap, woke up for dinner and checked my email only to find an informal email about acceptance! I was totally not expecting it since it was already past 5 in that school's time zone!

Yeah...I'm on three waitlists and one of the programs told me that there is a "small likelihood" that they can extend me an offer, but that I would have to wait until April for such a decision. Waitlists are no fun...but better than a rejection I suppose!

lyh -- first off, congratulations on your offer to OSU! that's super exciting and they have a pretty solid math grad program. if you dont mind me asking, did you apply for UIUC's math phd program as well and when did you hear back?

Out of the 13 schools I applied to...I got 3 rejections followed by 3 wait-lists...hopefully 3 admits next?! hahaha

That's awesome! I'm a mathematics major myself and it makes me pretty happy when I see people outside of the field who find it fascinating. What sort of things in math do you like to read about?

I never use pencils! I always do all my scratch work on either loose-leaf notebook paper of blank white printer paper. I can't read notes on my computer -- I always print out handouts or online lecture material.

I play a couple instruments and listen to a lot of music too. I'm also big on film. I guess a lot of my downtime is actually spent at coffeeshops reading things for fun and just relaxing.

I'm a mathematics major applying for a PhD in pure mathematics. I spend a lot of time with music and film. Sometimes I envision my second life where I am a comparative literature major specializing in film studies. I also enjoying reading literature...though I don't nearly read as much as I should!
