TheGirlWhoLived reacted in Pre Reqs, How do I meet them?
Not to be an ass, but why on Earth would you go to Full Sail to get a computer science degree? I know people who went there. It's a music school. You'll learn the tricks of the trade if you want to be a Hip Hop producer, but it isn't any place you go to for a serious academic degree. I don't even know if it's accredited.

Anyway, to the topic at hand. It would be hard enough getting into a Physics program with a computer science BS, but it'll be even harder with a BS from Full Sail. You need to contact the schools you're interested in and ask if your credits will transfer. Then you'll need to take the other pre-reqs you need from a local university or a community college.

I'm familiar with pre-reqs since I spent three additional semesters taking pre-reqs since I was going from a linguistics BA to a computational MS. It could definitely take some time to get all the pre-reqs. It really depends on how different your undergrad degree is from your prospective grad degree.

It doesn't matter if you don't copy it word for word. If you don't cite the proper sources, it's plagiarism. Sorry. That's not what you were going for, but that's what it turned into.
You don't have an excuse. There isn't an easy out. You need to tell him what happened.

I think you need to own up to it... May not be what you want to hear, but it's better than lying about it and him finding out.
I don't think anyone here will/should help you get out of plagiarizing.

Well, even if someone on gradcafe came up with another word, you will still have everybody else in academia using the word "plagiarism", and you would still get the same repercussions from doing so.

TheGirlWhoLived reacted to MakeYourself in Going to the same grad school for PhD as undergrad -- post-graduation employment prospects?
'Academic in-breeding' is an old-fashioned way of thinking that stems from a time when all academics were rich white European men who could travel wherever they wanted. Times have changed, therefore, many people's opinions have changed. Some people still have this pretentious and out-dated view and I personally feel sorry for them. It is a naive view, in my opinion. You can go to a different school and end up being more closed-minded than staying at the same school. Changing locations does not mean better education, it depends on a multitude of factors. And given that your decision was pragmatic and based on funding, I think you may have made the right choice (not to mention you said it fits your research interest best which should be the number one factor in  making a decision!!).

I wouldn't worry about it, if an employer's only reason to not hire you is because you went to the same school for your undergrad and grad then I'd say good riddance, I wouldn't want to work for that pretentious and ignorant employer anyway.

You guys are seriously going to have a hard time building a career in the academy-- a very small world-- if you think that "screw ethics" is a reasonable response to this kind of situation.

But the post above you did.

It's impossible that it revolves around all of us.

So, Eternal, I think you did the "right" thing. Soon you'll be part of a new community where you'll start making a name for yourself.

Just explain to them what you said on here (minus the part of less qualified people getting in). Say that you would like to apply again next year and would really like to know how to improve your application. Politely ask for feedback.

TheGirlWhoLived got a reaction from drinkingtoomuchwater in Can I waive a financed offer after april 15th and accept an unfinanced one?
I would search for this topic. A lot of people have posted about it. You can but there is an argument over whether this is good form. If you take back your decision after April 15th, the school will most likely lose the funding so someone else will get screwed out of it. Some people say this isn't your responsibility. You can decide. You might not make the school/department very happy though.

I don't know if this helps at all. I actually have not been rejected at all this time around (fully funded at 4 and waiting on the last one), but this isn't my first time around.
Last year, I applied to probably 10 programs and was rejected from all of them (well, I got waitlisted at one. Woo?). BUT. And this is the point. It was probably the best thing to ever happen to me (despite the large amount of money wasted).
I got a job which isn't ideal, but I think it gave me some real world experience that stood out on my resume. I also started working with a new prof doing research, and I was really able to discover what I wanted to do (get an idea at least. Does anyone ever know?). I also am getting the chance to travel, which I wouldn't have had before. I just feel much better prepared and have a better sense of purpose.
Of course, the application process is never fun, BUT there is hope

Wow, I can't think of a college in the US that wouldn't consider this a firable offense. Even the most relaxed policies draw the line when you're talking about a situation where a TA is living with the person whose work she or he is evaluating.  And a 20 year age gap! I think it matters. It matters because this person is creepy as hell!

Then again, I think Patty Hearst was living with her TA, Steve Weed, when she was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.. Then again, there wasn't a 20-year-age gap there.

Yes, they do require a master's and they seemingly give you full credit for having it. I am thrilled at the opportunity to study with Dr. Nicole Leeper Piquero for my personal research interests and also learn from accomplished professors like Dr. John Worrall and Dr. Alex Piquero.

I have withdrawn my application from South Carolina and South Florida where I had also been accepted. I've officially committed to the University of Texas at Dallas!!

Anybody claiming the Penn State wait list? My online status just says "submitted," which is, while accurate, not very informative.

I can't claim Maryland but I did get an email from UT Dallas accepting me into their program! I'm most excited because of a few of their professors and my research interests are a great fit. Their program is scheduled for 3 years and this is also very attractive for me.

Does anyone have an opinion on UT Dallas' PhD program for criminology?
