  1. @klader That must be more common with Comp/Rhet? Many lit programs seem to award you an M.A. as you're in the program.
  2. You don't even need a M.A. to get into a PhD program so I can't see an M.A. that lacked any given component going so far as hurting you in that way. So, NEED? No. I've seen some schools go so far as to say that they don't even deliberately rank one candidate over another based on M.A. or lack of an M.A. When I spoke to University of Kansas, the professors I was on the phone was pleased to hear I had taught in my M.A. But I also understood it wasn't that cut and dry. Honestly, this round of applying to PhD programs taught me that there are so many variables that there's no point sweating any particular one.
  3. Finally got that sweet sweet rejection from UCR. I knew I was not getting in when I heard they were looking for particular applicants, so it's all good.
  4. Virginia Tech was closed today because of the snow storm.
  5. I am 99.9% committed to Howard, but a rejection or ANYTHING from UCR would be nice
  6. Are you local to California? Riverside is a really great, super-diverse school. The area may not be Santa Barbara or Davis, but you're in proximity to L.A....and vegas if that's your thing. (I can't say that was not a tiny motivation in my applying) I'm excited for you! I really learned how really strange and random this process is. You might have the best application in the world, but some chance technicality might bar you. I hope you enjoy UCR. You applied there for a reason -- even if it was not your number 1.
  7. Maybe someone has answered this -- is it rational to not have a car? I will be staying in Howard's student apartments for the first semester for convenience sake and I don't know if bringing a car is in the cards.
  8. E-mail from UCSB REEEEEEEEEEEEEJECTED It was my topic pick -- but I long ago settled into probably being rejected. I have an offer from Howard, with funding.
  9. Wow. I did not even think about that. Even relative proximity to NY and the Schomberg.
  10. I've been iced out by UCSB and UCR --- sooooo I think I'll be taking my offer from Howard University, tuition remission, with a stipend, so that works with me!
  11. Good luck! And good to know they're still in the process
  12. I just found out that I sent a Statement of Purpose fully addressed to University A (and mentioning specific professors and conversations I've had) to University B and uploaded it as my writing sample. They are letting me resubmit, but OH MY GOD.
  13. I just got a second chance to submit missing materials for what I thought was an implied rejection. Wish me Luck!
  14. My concentration was so broad in my SOP for my M.A. program. It literally just said African American lit, maybe I specified with women. That was it. I ended up writing on a specific migration narrative and blah blah blah. So, no. I don't think switching is that egregious. Just find the right people to work with once you get there, because M.A. programs go quick,
  15. This email does not exist. But is seems that the lady moved offices. I just googled her. Andrea Ellickson.
  16. Also. These are the only two schools I got full applications into. I emailed the graduate advisor for ucsb (who'd answered questions for me before) and the email bounced back.
  17. During my M.A. program, I picked up an old Norton Anthology of Literary Theory, and those little blurbs before each excerpt made the difference between night and day for me.
  18. Interesting. I kind of wish schools were transparent about factors like this.
  19. UCR and UCSB are killing me and those are my last two schools that I was able to actually submit completed apps to
