UPenn Has Notified Everyone Already
tortola23 replied to InTransition?'s topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm just glad to know as quickly as possible. We'll probably get emails, letters, and/or updated online statuses soon. -
Thanks! Hadn't seen that yet.

Any rejections yet?
-
I emailed them. "Your letter will probably go out in Monday's mail. It will go to the mailing address you put in your application: xxxx blah blah blah my address." Hmm. Wish they'd just tell me.
-
Thank you! Please do.

My "last updated" date on the website has changed from sometime way back in January when they processed my documents to "2/26/2010." I'm guessing that means I'll receive a postal rejection soon like the first wave of folks got. Anyone else have a changed date this morning?

nothing, nothing, nothing
tortola23 replied to hopefulJ2010's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Is anyone else all agitated over UPenn? Less than 1% chance of getting in, supposed to get notifications in February... I just want to know that I'm rejected so I can finally start crossing schools off my list! I feel like once I hear from one school, the ball will start rolling and the dead silence won't be so awful, and the notifications (good and bad!) will start getting around at a steady pace. As someone wrote a while ago, February has been one giant striptease. (And now I have blue balls, y'all.) -
Senior Thesis or Double Major
tortola23 replied to woolfie's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I am coming from an honors college where everyone has to write a fourth-year thesis in order to graduate. I used the first chapter of mine as my writing sample for applications. Bbut, I have not heard from a single one of my eight schools, so I am guessing that writing one isn't super impressive. However, my undergraduate institution is also unconventional in that we have a "narrative evaluation system" (like Santa Cruz) instead of letter grades, we have no GPAs, we're extremely small, etc. I also transferred to this school, which makes my transcripts look odd being divided up b/w a very mainstream, well-known institution and then a tiny obscure (if highly ranked) one. [Anyone else have these kinds of undergrad anomalies?] Realistically, I'd say that it doesn't matter whether you've written a thesis or not, especially if you have an excellent writing sample and/or publications to show them. I think they're looking at us as whole students, and we could be rejected or accepted for a variety of pretty arbitrary-sounding reasons depending on what they want from their future TA workforce and advisees. -

Oooo! What have you heard? -
nothing, nothing, nothing
tortola23 replied to hopefulJ2010's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I haven't heard anything at all. Four of my eight schools have definitely started accepting AND rejecting, but no word for me. I know how you feel, I would like news of some sort! It is just hideously stressful not knowing what's happening with the next 5+ years of your life. -
UPenn English?
tortola23 replied to strokeofmidnight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
UPenn was a long-shot for me to begin with, and after hearing what my odds for admission were and not having received an offer even from my "easier" schools yet, I've pretty much given up. I'd imagine that they will notify us through that "message" feature on the online application page. Usually with those systems you receive an email telling you to check the website, where you can see your admissions decision. I guess we're all still waiting, although they're supposed to make all decisions in February... -
UArizona Rhetoric & Comp.?
tortola23 replied to tortola23's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Anyone else have news? I was reeeaaally hoping to have good news from this school (Rhet/Comp)... Please post with details if you have any, good or bad! -
Medieval, that's how I'm feeling about all of my schools. I'm ready for NEWS, even if it's a rejection!
-
Mine still says 1/28/2010, which is when they filed all of my materials. I haven't heard a word from them. Should we be expecting rejections, or do you guys think there might be another wave or two of acceptances?
-
I'm still waiting to hear from all eight of my schools. A few of them have notified enough people already that I am pretty sure I'll get some rejects soon, or at the best not get any funding. The suspense is the WORST! I would rather just know already, so I can get over it and start planning what to do with myself next year.

Relief by Rejection
tortola23 replied to poco_puffs's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I still haven't heard from a single school, and I feel like it's driving me MUCH crazier than getting a rejection ever would. Somehow this stress is worse... hopefully we'll all get news soon! -
What's with the stats request?
tortola23 replied to strokeofmidnight's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
When I've requested stats, what I've wanted to know is the admit's undergrad institution, their subfield/interests, who their email/phone call was from, and what was said or written in it (ie: did it contain financial info, did it mention who their advisor might be). I want to know the undergrad institution because I come from an unconventional one and wonder whether that will hurt my chances. As for GRE/GPA, I don't get the feelng those stats are very good indicators of whether someone will be admitted or not unless they're extraordinarily low. -
Has anyone else applied to this program? Have you had any word yet? I emailed a couple of weeks ago to check that all of my materials had arrived. I got an email back saying that they were filed and under review, but no word on when decisions might be made, how many applicants there are this year, etc. Does anyone have any news or information?
-
NO dude, you are NOT the only one. For a long time I was practically having panic attacks over "What happens if NONE of these schools take me?" Then I sat down and made a detailed plan of my options if that does actually happen. It made me feel much better. I could live with my parents for a year (no), move in with friends in a new city (yes!), possibly move in with my s.o. in a new city (yes!), and do something totally different like wait tables or be a barista or work in a bookstore or tutor high schoolers, and focus HARD on applying to tons of schools the next year. You have more options than you think! Making alternative plans made me feel much better. Try it! The world won't end, keep that in mind.

Your Application Status
tortola23 replied to Venetia's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Some of mine say "submitted" and some say "under review." I contacted the schools that still say "submitted", and I am under review there as well; they just don't update the status. I wouldn't worry!
