STILL NOTHING, ALL DAY. Good god, I hope the whole week doesn't pass by this way. -

I still haven't heard anything, either. My earliest deadline was December 1st and the latest is tomorrow, but I've finished everything. The December and January schools should start notifying this week, I would think . . . I certainly hope, because waiting is getting worse and worse. I'm a jittery mess at work because I have constant access to the internet. Gaahhh. -

I used my first chapter, adjusted to three different lengths, as my main writing sample. I think it's a smart move since you can note at the top that it's part of a larger thesis or project. -
I got that email, too. I'm expecting to hear before March begins. I really, really hope that's next week and not even later.

Thanks, I'm sending good karma to you, too! My focus is postcolonial lit.

This is my top choice, a total reach, and I'm kind of a mess waiting on the decision. If I get into UT, I get to stay in Austin with my significant other. If I get in nowhere I can also stay here if I like. If I get in to another school, I have to move. Last year they started notifying around February 18th. Anyway, just wanted to have a pity-party with anyone else waiting on this program.

I applied to the Professional Writing MA program there; anyone else? I don't think we'll hear back until early March, though.

Yup. I was also told by all of my professors that my apps would be stronger with both a completed BA and a completed thesis as a writing sample. So we'll see . . . -

I applied to eight schools while working on my thesis last year. Believe it or not, I was less stressed out then, because the thesis took my mind off of applications! This year I'm just working, so there's very little to distract me. -

I still haven't heard a thing. I really hope it all explodes next week, because I can't take much more suspense and anxiety. -
Contacting department?
tortola23 replied to cquin's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I've called and emailed departments, but only about materials that appeared to be missing. I would wait when it comes to decisions. -

Nope, they were not very helpful at all, she just said that not everything had been filed yet and brushed me off. Which # did you call and which extension did you use? -

Just called to check: They're STILL filing things, and will contact you if anything is missing from your file. Weird considering that they usually start notifying people in mid-February, but whatever. I just hope they really will contact applicants about missing documents. -

I only knew about it because I did a year of undergrad there. No worries. Plus, they don't update it anyway. -

This is also my second round of apps--twice as many this year as last. I get VERY angry with people who say things like, "Try, try again!" Yeah, because it isn't time-consuming, expensive, and emotionally devastating, HA. Plus, another year of working a boring job like mine (receptionist) sounds pretty damn bad to me. To make it harder, there is one school I want to get into more than all of the rest because it would mean I could continue living in the same city as my significant other. I'm sure a lot of other folks on here are in the same situation. It's hard knowing that I may get no admits or just one admit that's in another state . . . and I'd have to accept the offer and move because it's that important to me. I haven't had this much angst and anxiety since I was an adolescent. Sheesh. -

According to the online checklist, they haven't received the transcripts I sent them. I called last week and was told to wait since they were "still filing." I think I'll call again today and ask if they're not updating the checklist, since that's been the case with the majority of my other schools. I call or email freaking out about lost mail or lost scores, and they actually have everything and just haven't updated online. -

I'm in the same boat, albeit only with Pittsburgh instead. I'm 99% sure that's an implicit rejection, but it still leaves that annoying glimmer of hope . . . and there are eleven other schools with no word for anyone yet! Needless to say, I am a nervous wreck too. And, none of my schools seem to use their online checklists and notifcation systems for ANYTHING. I wish I could fast-forward a few weeks. -
UPitt Acceptances
tortola23 replied to tortola23's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Just emailed to inquire, and "the committee will be making a decision soon and you’ll receive a letter in the mail in the next couple of weeks." From my experiences last year, a letter in the mail = rejection. Sorry, guys. -

I do this every single night! So much fun. Hate to bring it up, but . . . are you having as much anxiety as I am about the possibility of being separated from the SO for a grad program? Gah I can't stand even thinking about it, and it makes the tension about decisions even worse. -

I'm guessing that all acceptances have been sent now. Anyone know if they do a waiting list? I've definitely given up on this one, though. -

I am SUCH planner. This whole thing is driving me nuts. Last year I got rejections, so this year I applied to twice as many schools. I'm so ready to live somewhere for more than a year! -

I too have a boring job, from 10am to 7pm Monday through Thursday. Since I'm just sitting there occasionally talking to a customer with the internet in front of me, I can't stop myself from checking GradCafe while I'm here. But when I'm at home, I try to relax and not think about it. - reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld series - reading Wikipedia - watching dumb TV shows I didn't have time for last year in college (lots of cooking ones, + ridiculous stuff like Criminal Minds, Bones, and House) - knitting frantically - making collages to decorate the apartment - cleaning - cooking - learning about beer It's rough times, but hopefully we'll all make it through without losing it entirely. -
asking for feedback
tortola23 replied to yank in the M20's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I asked for feedback from a school last year because they offered it. I talked to the graduate director on the phone, and while he wasn't extremely specific about what I could change in my application, he was helpful and encouraging. -
Dude, I know . . . I didn't get in anywhere last year. Cheers to second tries!
-
I applied last year, got my hopes way up about multiple waves of admits . . . and there was only one. Be prepared for rejections; their number of applicants tripled last year, and it looks like it's stayed steady this year, with no more $ and therefore no more spots. Good luck with your other schools! I did not reapply here.
