  1. Literally logged in just to upvote this. Totally agree with E-P as I’ll also be 41, 40 with my PhD if I’m lucky/speedy. ? it is true that lots of people are changing careers in midlife - and many without the opportunity (for various reasons) to chase after what they really are meant to do. So go for it! I think it will actually pass a lot quicker than we all think.
  2. This is a super cute idea! I love that you found a plastic train.
  3. I moved abroad from the States to a Caribbean island with my dog. Like previous posters stated, it required a a series of rabies titers and a health check 24 hours before travel. Your destination country will have detailed requirements, and as long as you follow them you should be fine. I will say that you should check the airline carrier you will be traveling on. Some carriers have requirements as to landing with animals in a certain climate (heat/cold) but this may be for animals in the hold, and not in the cabin. I will admit it was one of the more stressful parts of my overseas move, but it was mostly because I couldn't travel in the cabin with my corgi and had to put her with the cargo.
  4. I'll see some of you at Purdue's welcome weekend next month!
  5. That sounds interesting! I'm waiting on two more actually. The wait is torturous!
  6. Congrats on your acceptance! One of the schools I was also waitlisted at last year only accepted 4, so 11 is not too bad. May I ask what concentration you are interested in?
  7. Thanks! Fingers crossed for sure. I was on their waiting list last year so would love some good news.
  8. Well Purdue for one Amherst is the other I’m keeping an eye on in the results board.
  9. Thanks! Yes that was what prompted my question. Looks like from the results board Purdue has sent out at least 3.
  10. Hey everyone. Was just thinking that If I started this thread I should pop in every once in a while. Anyone here have one of the Purdue acceptances? I was curious if anyone knew about how many people they typically accept each year?
  11. Ha yes, come Jan 20ish I'll be in a different mental state probably. Luckily work keeps me busy otherwise I'd be going crazy. Good luck at the drs!
  12. Filling them out...actually obsessing over the personal statement. That's the worst. Now although I'm waiting, I feel like I have my weekends back. Heading to the beach this weekend for the first time in a while.
  13. All done with apps finally. Seemed more of a struggle this year - perhaps being more careful with my apps? Now just the wait!
  14. Fine tuning SOPs at the moment - aiming to have everything sent off and done by this weekend. Eeek!
  15. Welcome! Don't worry, if your stressed, you're in good company here - we will all be that way at some point until we get all those apps in!
  16. Sounds like you have a great start! I received really encouraging email from one of my schools on Friday, so I've been super motivated this weekend to do GRE and SOP tasks - kind of reaffirmed I'm on the right path. It's funny how sometimes that's all you need to keep going!
  17. Mintless - I hear you. I've been out of school for a while so it's not easy. There's so many unknowns that you face when you prepare to send an app off it's hard to get a handle on what to focus on sometimes.
  18. Welcome lisajd! Good luck with the studying. I'm beginning with all that again (scheduled for Oct.) and standardized tests are really not my thing - but, gotta do it right?
  19. Hi mintless - welcome! I'm in the process of retaking the GREs as well in the fall. Anything to get a little more of an edge this time around. Are you going to narrow down the 10-13, or stick with that number? I'd also like to broaden my selection this year, but still trying to figure out what that will be aside from my two that I think I got close to. I feel like the second time around I feel like I know what I'm doing at least a little more than I did last year.
  20. Hi everyone. I haven't seen an applications thread for this coming cycle just yet, so I thought I'd start one. My interests are health/environmental and social interaction and culture. I applied to four schools last year and was waitlisted by Purdue and Amherst so I'm trying again with those schools and a few others. 2018 applicants, where are you all in the process and how are you feeling about this cycle?
  21. @av2010 I think your research sounds really interesting. In undergrad we could choose a kind of mini-minor or concentration if you will, and I chose sex and relationships because we had some excellent courses at my university on the subject. It was actually kind of funny because pulling my undergrad transcripts - I hadn't looked at them in a while and every semester was like a course on sex - relationships, media, film, deviation basically. I was like geez I hope this does not seem weird to ad comms! But, it's such an important and relevant topic within comm in particular I think. And evolving I might say with technology.
  22. First of @av2010 Whoot-Whoot! Congrats! @DBear you can be the official TGC sage - what do you think? Thanks @ejpril88 and @DBear and @heyDW - I think it is really interesting. My interests and topic are kind of new in comm studies - mostly cross over into sociology anthropology and psychology. A lot more research is being done in Europe, as its still gaining traction in the states so if I don't get in anywhere this cycle, I'm trying across the pond next year.
  23. @av2010 my research is looking at the role of human communication and discourse in understanding our relationships with animals and the natural world, and how (if) animals influence human social interaction. Also interested in media and rhetoric although it was not what my past research focused on. You?
