2017 Applications Thread

@ejpril88 congrats on UC Davis! Now you have a couple choices. I've been itching to respond to this thread, but I hesitate to login while at work lol. Similar to @GreenEyedTrombonist I found I'm just passionate about my research subject and just can't let go of the idea of not pursuing it. After my MA I didn't even think about doing my PhD because I was well on a safe (industry/nonprofit) career path. A few years have passed though and I look back on what I did during my undergrad and felt that I missed it so much, and after going to a couple of conferences and presenting I just felt so...at home if that makes sense. Plus, I'm looking forward to teaching - another thing I thought I'd never say years ago!- 733 replies

Man, you guys...I'm with @GreenEyedTrombonist on this one. Everyday that passes I lose a little more hope even though I've heard nothing yet. Goes against all logic but it's hard not to spectate. I've decided that I'm going to the gym tomorrow darn it! Hopefully will balance out the veggi burger and fries I ate tonight.- 733 replies

@chiquitica I contacted at least one POI for each school I applied to. As this is my first cycle, I've yet to see if it pans out! I've heard of students having success both ways so I think both approaches work.- 733 replies

@GreenEyedTrombonist well I'm sure you'll find lots of help from folks here about comm programs. Those of us who are reapplying will have insight about schools and those starting programs will be able to provide inside knowledge about programs.- 733 replies

@ejpril88 I applied to Iowa, Ohio U and UMass. Not as many as other students on GC. Thanks for the insight, that's good info to know. I know that Purdue is a good school with decent job placement - just by doing some of my own investigating online. More than anything, as I look at schools, I want to know I have at least a good chance at a job when I graduate. They seem to have a good teaching program for new grad students as well which is great. My initial contact was very positive with my POI too. I have heard that there have been budget cuts to the liberal arts and sciences department where the comm program is housed, but also that they've raised their stipend for grad students too, but that it was fairly low to begin with. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/02/23/purdue-increasing-graduate-student-stipends-it-cuts-graduate-enrollment- 733 replies

@ejpril88 random question, but I'm still trying to figure out if and when Purdue will send a rejection letter to me since no offer was extended but my status still says "submitted." Do you know if rejections have been sent to anyone yet? I kind of want to reach out to see if I'm on some sort of waitlist and don't know it - not sure if they even do waitlists, or as some have mentioned here, tracks review independently of one another.- 733 replies

How many times have you checked your spam box today?

@DBear it's awesome to hear you have an interview to look forward to and prepare for! You'll have to let us know how it goes. I try to periodically just bring myself back down to earth by reminding myself how incredibly privileged I am to even be in this position of applying to PhD programs. Distracting myself with some deep thoughts like that can't hurt. That and the 210 emails I have to answer since being on vacation for a spell -

Can I mention that I'm starting to hate weekends because I know that there will be no emails. Somehow still does not prevent me from obsessively refreshing. :/ -

@angesradieux your feelings are totally normal. But what @GunningForGrad said is right - your friends and family will be there, and it probably won't be easy at first. But, in any decision you make there is risk, (staying where you are is also a risk!) but as long as you are making a calculated one you will be okay. Feeling a little scared means you care about your future and want to make the best decision instead of jumping headlong into something without thinking.

@DBear nicely put. Leadership/faculty sets the tone for programs, like any workplace really, and I'm paying attention this time to that more than I did before. Live and learn! @ejpril88 I also believe the students will reveal a lot about the program, even if they are not explicit about it.- 733 replies

2017 Applications Thread
phdthoughts replied to kirbs005's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
@ejpril88 it was more of a cliquey atmosphere. To make a long story short, my particular program and faculty leadership seemed to favor those who went to the same program in undergrad, as well as those who were not working. I worked the entire time, so I think was seen as a less "serious" student. It's not as if people were not friendly, more like you were either "in" or "out." I'm the only one in my cohort as far as I know, who is continuing to go to conferences, pursue publishing and trying for a PhD which is kind of ironic, and I'll admit a little bit vindicating. :). I think part of it for me, is that I met such close friends in undergrad pretty much immediately, I optimistically thought that grad school would be the same. I guess it was kind of a shock when I discovered the opposite. That aside, I do think that it was the atmosphere of that particular program and not all grad schools in general. I eventually found a great group of people there who I still am in touch with today, including my thesis committee! Knowing what I know now, I if I get in I will be visiting the program and students to get a feel for the atmosphere overall before I accept.- 733 replies
