Sooo I'm most likely not getting into University of North Carolina. I thought my PI meeting was the 15th, nope it was today. I didn't realize my mistake until she emailed me at 1:20 and our meeting was at 1:00. I have had a headache all day and it was two hours away. Oh well, life moves on. I sent her an email in response apologizing for not showing up so at least I don't feel like a complete jerk.

My team won today and I'm going to the seahawks vs panthers game next week. I'm sooooo excited!

That's what my friends who went to community college say too! In my opinion Community is vastly underrated. I was sad when it ended but I have all the seasons so I can binge my guilty pleasure. I would have to say its one of my favorites along with Seinfeld, I never got into Friends. Friends wasn't funny to me.

I'm applying for grad school this fall as well, so I have nothing to really add. But I'm really interested in hearing everyone's experiences! From all the grad schools I've applied too, only one has definitely said no funding. That program mention GA positions but those are very hard to come by so I'm not relying on that at all. If I have to take out loans it won't be too bad, I have no debt from undergrad.

Community is pretty awesome!

Thanks! I already applied to one iffy program, that's North Carolina. Their museum program is within the history department so I'll see how it goes. She's a nice person and she does great research. My professors have favorites and I'm not one of her favorites. Its mainly because I don't want to do igneous research. Oh well, I just planned everything out with my boyfriends help. He was a geology major too. Plus another professor kinda took over being my adviser pretty much. He is my menator and he has provided me with great opportunities, so I can't complain too much. I'm just an anxious person.
-
Oh she will! She waits till the last min for everything. Plus her sister is having major health problems so I'm just ranting to myself ha. Everything will work out for the best! I just like complaining sometimes, Larry David is my spirit animal.

Same here, I'm leaving Virginia and I've been living here for 15 years now. I'm extremely excited though! I can't wait to live in a new region. It would be nice to return to the PNW. I do love my clouds and rain. Indianapolis was an awesome city too and Kansas City isn't too far away either. Plus I want to know where I'm going so me and my boyfriend can plan things!

@littlemoondragon You are right that I don't need it! I just like having options, so I was having a mini rant ha. The programs I applied too have more diverse faculty than most public history programs anyways since they are interdisciplinary programs. Most of the time you need experience or the masters degree. Right now I have two years of working in museums and with the MA I'm sure I'll eventually land a position. Plus it helps that I'm going after smaller more regional places than compared to the Smithsonian.

Yeah I've been waiting forever. I submitted my applications months ago even though they are due the 15th. Oh well. I still need to do Texas Tech though. They wanted paper so I'm planning on doing that when school starts again. Their deadline is in June so by sending it out in Jan it looks like they weren't an afterthought. I like their program the other ones just had more pressing timelines.

There have been a lot of talks at GSA conferences about the lack of diversity. Those talks were my favorite and I really hope this will change in my lifetime. Right now my faculty has some diversity. Out of the 8 professors two are non-white males and my adviser is the only woman. We just got a new lab instructor and she is pretty awesome. Yeah that is not a lot of diversity but it seems to be representative of geologists. I think the lack of diversity is caused social economic reasons as well as cultural. I never saw geology questions on the SOLS and most of schools didn't really teach geology as much compared to the other sciences. I'm hoping in my career I'll help more people become exposed to geology and want to become geologists, or any kind of education really. Also in my program, 95% of the women are becoming Earth Science teachers. So you won't see them teaching at the college level. But you shouldn't have to deal with this kind of bullshit. I would definitely become a whistle blower somehow. Otherwise these situations will continue to be a problem. Luckily I've never had to deal with that in my program and almost all of the faculty have been supportive. Except for one professor, he does treat the women in our program very creepily. It's never over the top but I see it as inappropriate. However, that professor and I don't get along so we never interact with each other.

I've been trying to figure out how to turn myself into a dog. Dogs don't have to worry about grad schools. And my last reference still hasn't sent her letters in! wiucgowcbailbviaguiaevbadaf.

I would have to say most of my professors have dressed on the casual side but according to them a collared shirt/khakis=dressed up for geology ha. I would have to say I've never noticed my professors shoes before. Except for my mentor, he wears mandals with socks ha. I've seen other professors use an extra chair/table for their winter gear. For myself I either use the back of my chair or if I'm in the science building I go down to my office and put my winter stuff in there.
-
I would have to say I'm running into issues but that's mainly because my undergrad may be too much of a jump for some of the programs I've looked into. I was really interested in Public History but without a major/minor in history it's pretty much an auto-rejection. Oh well, I've applied to other programs but it would be nice to have more options. For reference I'm getting a geology BS and I want to eventually become a program director/outreach director in a science museum.

We all need to vent and I hope everything works out for everyone! My vent is my reference STILL hasn't written any of my letters to any of my schools. I constantly keep checking the results page hoping there are still openings for my programs. Other times I look into Public History programs but I'm not a history major or have a minor. So I can't apply to those programs. I mean I could but it would be less hassle to just set money on fire. I just wish my adviser helped me out, she is an amazing geology professor. But shes so busy with other things that she hasn't helped me at all. I planned my course schedule for every semester and look into programs myself. It would have been nice to know what I needed to do to have more options. I'm severely limited now unless I want to try to gain a minor and add more semesters to my undergrad. But I'm a senior and its my last semester now. I mean my school has museum studies classes but I couldn't get into them because I didn't have the prerequisites! I like her but she isn't a good adviser at all.

How Badly Did I Screw Up??

Stop. Yeah I would say save your money and don't apply. -
I've been stalking the results page and so far I've seen nothing. So I'm not sure how I feel ha. And once again, I'm still waiting on my last reference to send her letters.

I actually never have tried wine before. I always think about it but I always forget ha. If I'm staying in I like mike's hard lemonade brand. But if I'm out, I usually get a martini. I'm a huge light weight though so I usually just drink one or two drinks. As of right now I'm watching random shows, reading all my books, and being happy that my boyfriend is back from Alaska. I have to deal with administrative stuff so that has been keeping me busy unfortunately. Also avoiding the fact I have to take physics this semester...

@museum_geek Thanks for the suggestion! Tbh I don't think I would be a great fit for the program. It's pretty great hearing from other people who are studying similar things though.

Submitted Applications 2016 Entry
Need Coffee in an IV replied to hippyscientist's topic in Waiting it Out
@piglet33 Ha yeah that's exactly how I feel. I will either have barely any competition or I will be buried by other applicants. I've been internalizing my angst so I haven't bombarded her with emails. I just sent my first reminder email today, I just want to increase my chances of funding. I asked her in September so I didn't wait until the last minute. I'm sure she will get them done! I'm an obsessive person ha. -
Never mind, I need more coffee ha

I'm still waiting for one of my references to send her letters....why is she taking foreverrrr?! I've seen a couple people posting about getting an MA in Museum Studies but we seem to be a very small group ha. -
@museum_geek I applied to CU Boulder! I received a lukewarm response so we will see how that goes. And I actually haven't heard of Tech's program. I'm currently at Radford University so I'm actually close by. I wonder if I can squeeze in one more application. @Sg693 Yeah I submitted all of my applications except Texas Tech. They have a longer deadline so I'll finish that one soon. And now I wait for my letters...

@scarvesandcardigans I'm really interested in University of North Carolina Greensboro as well! How are the city parks? They look really awesome online but then again everything does. Also how is the job outlook? My boyfriend may be coming with me if he doesn't get one of the federal jobs he has applied for. I'm really excited since this city seems big enough so there is a vibrant area, but not too big where I can get swallowed by the crowds. Plus the program I've applied for is one of my top choices!
