My mom works in the government and my boyfriend has been applying for jobs so I can help (kinda). Two months is very common/normal for the government. Usually what happens is that they will eventually send you an email saying if you are under-qualified, somewhat qualified, qualified, and highly qualified. Usually they only add people to the interview list if they are highly qualified. After you have been added to the list it will take another month or so to possibly be invited for an interview. They usually never tell you if the position has been filled or not (boyfriend applied in Nov, is still waiting after being informed he made the list that goes to the hiring manager). So tbh the best way to get a job is too pretty much apply to every opening you see. And people who are already in the system have "dips" on job openings. Good luck, its tough.

Oooooh ok, that changes my answer then! Yeah you could go to the interview and bring up working part time. The worst they can say is no!
-
I would go to the interview and see what happens! Tbh I would take the job over the PhD, but I'm going to grad school so I could get my dream job. In my opinion grad school will always be there, this interview/job won't. Good luck!

I'm bumping this since I was accepted and want updated info! Sooo a couple of questions. First how easy is it to find a job in or near eugene? My boyfriend is moving with me and we want to get an overall feel for the job market. Also is eugene an overall great place to live? I guess what I mean by that is if its a clean city with low crime rates. My boyfriend was in grad school at fairbanks and he hated it. Fairbanks was pretty much unappealing in every way. Also does anyone have recommendations for apartments? We rather avoid the loud undergrads. This would be a great help, thanks!

What were you doing when you received your acceptance?
Need Coffee in an IV replied to YA_RLY's topic in Waiting it Out
I love reading these! For my acceptance there's not too much of a story. I was just randomly checking all my portals around 8ish and I saw I was accepted at the University of Oregon! I told my boyfriend as soon as I saw the email since he was right there ha. I then told everyone else the next day. Still waiting on funding. -
Any time! I'm almost lacking in sentimental value ha. I would have to say our mountains are pretty great and there is a lot of hiking/trails. I'm not a huge beach person though!
-
I can't really relate since I didn't have strong ties to the place where I grew up. I don't even think of it as my "hometown". But I will miss living this part of Virginia. Its beautiful and has a low cost of living. But you can always have support here!
-
I haven't received an email or call from Oregon but my portal says I'm accepted. So I haven't really heard any details yet so you aren't alone! I'm planning on contacting them on Monday to ask about details. Who knows, maybe they do snail mail?
-
I'm really sorry to everyone whos heard less than stellar news so far! I'm the worst for comfort though so I'm not sure if I can help that much. We will hear soon.....hopefully!

I'm so paranoid that the reboot will ruin everything ha. So if I hear through the grapevine Luck and Lorelai didn't end up together I'm ignoring the reboot ha.
-
@Neist That does seem huge for an abstract. Then again I can't really remember the word count for my friends' research so it may be normal? I'm happy you like your research so much/has potential for expansion. And thanks for helping me out! My boyfriend keeps telling me to breath ha.

I'm the last person that can be described as soothing ha. Paris Geller is a free spirit compared to me. But you can always call tomorrow and ask!

I ended up sending this. I hope this sounds ok. Ms. gatekeeper, My portal doesn't show Dr. mentor's letter as submitted. Is this because he submitted his letter through a different setup? I really just want to make sure the faculty has access to all of my materials and my application is complete. Would you mind double checking? Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. about to throw up person
-
What do you think of this? Ms. person, I logged onto the graduate portal and for Dr. ROC the portal says he hasn't started his letter. I'm double checking to see if I have everything completed. Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide. Have a great weekend. Paranoid undergrad

Yeah I know what you mean about career making programs. I'm debating whether to email the graduate coordinator. On my portal it says that one of my references hasn't started his letter. But he had technical difficulties so he emailed the letter to her. We corresponded and she said she received the letter and it has been uploaded to my file. I still feel super nervous though. I have this paranoid feeling that my application isn't even being reviewed....

Annnnnnnnd someone was accepted into the museum program at Kansas. I'm starting to freak out a bit.

Seattle is extremely expensive particularly if you got used to an area that has a low cost of living. I live in an area where I only pay 500 for a 2 bedroom apartment in a quite neighborhood. So that 2000 is scary to some of us. I'm in a similar boat, I applied to Uwashington as well but I doubt I will end up there. I have to consider expenses and my boyfriend's happiness as well. I think the Washington degree might give you more flexibility but I've only heard great things about Wisconsin.

Favorite Rejection Quotes from the Results Page

Sounds like a special snowflake to me. You know that person was a pain in group work ha. -
I think its more than ok to feel pessimistic, its realistic. Thats why I know I could never be a flight attendant, all that smiling would kill me. But maybe try to check portals instead of waiting on emails? Thats how I found out my acceptance to Oregon. Plus I've waited for over a month before I got any news.
-
Yeah I have no debt from undergrad and I would love to avoid it for my masters as well. Plus saving for emergency funds/retirement is a big thing. Plus there is eating too.
-
Thanks! Everyone was super friendly that I emailed and the program looks like a dream. I just hope I get some money, they known for limited funding.
-
I got into University of Oregon!!! Now I wait for funding details.
-
Exactly! I'm hoping that i won't have to use plan b because I know I need that MA for what I want to do. Or I could use all my rejection emails/letters as material and open an etsy store. Maybe I could earn enough money to recoup one application fee.

1 PhD program vs. 3 Master's Programs
Need Coffee in an IV replied to ZuzuRU's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I'm applying for master programs and not Ph.D. programs so I may be biased. But what is your career goals in Paleobiology? Most of my friends have gone off to funded master programs and they all seem pretty excited. Also being exposed to grad school may make you realize it's not what you thought it would be. I'm in the mindset that establishing contacts and being exposed to different programs is a great idea. My undergrad is in geology and I live in the Virginia Tech area! Have you ever thought about getting a masters and exploring museum opportunities? Then you can evaluate if you really want/need the Ph.D. That's pretty much what I'm doing. Besides grad school will always be there! -
No idea, but congrats! This is my first application cycle so I'm not an expert at all. If anything I would send a quick thank you email, saying that you are appreciative of the opportunity and you will keep them informed.
