  1. @jlt646 That's super frustrating and you are handling it much better than I would! I'm waiting for my official email/letter to formally accept but its pretty much a done deal for me!
  2. @Cat_Robutt I'm not exactly sure what system we are using for registering and the program does have a clear outline! The only mystery is the 12 electives I will have to take but I'm sure my POI will help me out with that. She isn't my adviser yet but she seems really interested in being my adviser so here's hoping. On their webpage it says that my graduate timeline will be formalized through a committee after 9 credit hours. I know I shouldn't be nervous but I always am when going off into the unknown.
  3. I'm super confused too but I'm still waiting for more details and I'm planning on talking to my POI this tuesday. Making sure coursework is available isn't a dumb/silly at all! My boyfriend naturally assumed the courses listed on the website would be taught. When he got there though, he found out that wasn't the case and his adviser essentially wrote out his masters timeline without any input....One of the reasons he decided grad school wasn't for him. I'm super nervous for the phone call, don't want to sound like an idiot... @Cat_Robutt and @Brimstone congrats!
  4. @fuzzylogician I do have a LinkedIn, but I should update/keep up with it more. My mentor says that I most likely won't need a PhD unless I want to work at the big time museums like the Smithsonian. I'm really looking forward to grad school and gaining/fine tuning my knowledge. Thanks for taking the time to give advice!
  5. Thanks for the info and helping me out! At this stage, I don't think I'll go for a PhD. Maybe after I complete my masters and work for a few years. I'm not completely ruling it out since I didn't think I was going for my masters and here I am. Only thing I regret in my undergrad studies is not gaining much research experience, but I'm planning on fixing that in Texas Tech! I would love to present at GSA in the near future, I love conferences.
  6. So do you guys think I should have one? I'm not sure how to even create a website. I'm going for my masters and haven't done research. I've had internships, work experience, and know what I want to study for my masters thesis. But I have a feeling that if I created one, it would be very empty/kinda sad looking.
  7. I'm getting my masters but I wanted to chime in! Originally, I was planning on interning at the museum I worked at last summer but I think funding fell through. I applied for their educator position but they wanted someone long term vs just for the summer. I'm planning on asking my mentor if I could possibly be paid to help him finish up the museum. If not, I'll volunteer to help him out! Plus I guess it depends on when my boyfriend gets a job in Lubbock. If he gets one soon, then I'm sure we will move fairly quickly. Sooooo I'm not exactly sure. I do know we are going to visit his family/friends before we go though or before school starts!
  8. The only season I wish I could erase is summer. Its mainly because of the bugs around here but I'm sure Lubbock's summers won't be too bad.
  9. I would have to say walnut canyon national monument, and the petrified forest were my favorites. I went to the grand canyon and it was pretty cool. But we only stayed on the tourist walkway since we saw a storm coming and we didn't want to hike through the rain. I also liked white sands national monument and carlsbad caverns national park. Just talking about it is making me excited to go back!
  10. Yeah plus while I was in the southwest, it never felt as hot as it was. I think its because of the arid climate. But one thing I'm excited about is that geological features are actually exposed around there! Unlike here, where you either have to wait for winter or bring a knife with you so you could actually see the outcrops.
  11. I actually just looked at that website and I'm pretty happy. Those temperatures are my sweet spot, anything over 75 I'm dying from heat.
  12. I'm excited about the low humidity in Lubbock! Plus it will be nice to be in the southwest for a bit. I took a road trip with bf throughout the southwest and it was a blast. I'm hoping it gets cool enough in the winter so I can wear my sweaters.
  13. I would have to say grad schools can be tricky with their funding. I applied to Oregon because I liked the program and they said they offer funding. I got in but was only given a work study position that wouldn't cover anything really. My total bill for two years would be around 80,000 a year at least. I asked about a fellowship but I wouldn't even know if I got it until halfway through the academic year. Thanks but no thanks. I would walk away.
  14. Anytime! You are definitely not the only one. my boyfriend loves it because he never has to guess at presents. I highlight the ones I've read in yellow, ones I'm about to read in blue, and I have side notes on what I thought about the book. I kinda wish I could be a book critic for a living but that's almost impossible ha.
  15. I'm sure you have a really high chance of getting. I'm debating what I should do this summer. I know I'm going to be helping my mentor finish up at our museum before I leave but I wonder if there's anything more I should do. I'm going to ask if I could possibly be funded but I'm not having high hopes on that. This will be the first time I'll be without a job in several years. @Levon3 That does make me feel better! I have a list of books I want to read and its over a 100 at the moment. I'm sure War and Peace isn't going anywhere. It would be hard to misplace that book!
  16. Yeah I know what you mean! Just after a week of visiting my parents I'm ready to come back to my quite apartment. I haven't lived with my parents in years and I'm not sure if I could. I mean I would if I was about to become homeless but I have a much better relationship with them now
  17. I'm planning on sticking around here. I like forums, its one of my hobbies. I like to say I'm allergic to the sun ha. My main obsession is Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David is the best. My boyfriend has been messing with me on how much I'm on this site ha. I keep telling myself that I'll eventually finish War and Peace. Right now though, I just have it in the corner judging me.
  18. @MarineBluePsy I know at my school I think I'll see friendly faces if not friends, everyone seems to be so nice so far. Sorry that you have been feeling down about the people around you. I'm sure things will get better! @Levon3 I cried when I was rejected from Kansas, didn't see that coming. I'm sure people noticed on here how bitter I was ha. I got over it though and I'm glad you are now excited! @mrbmrbmrb Yeah most of my friends graduated last year and my other friends are 6 hours/states away so I understand missing the social aspect. I'm over undergrad and want to go on to grad school!
  19. Yeah no problem! It's no classic, I find a lot of the classics dry for my taste. Its like come on Dickens, no need to make a paragraph when a sentence could have gotten the point across. I usually have to have coffee next to me so I can actually focus on the story . I like being on this forum. Cool, now you can say you have at least one friend. I like being on this forum, its pretty relaxing. @marycaryne Let me know if you want details on FSU, my brother worked there for a bit!
  20. @Neist I would have to say I have a very small number of friends and I usually hang out with them maybe once a month? Social outings exhaust me, but we can be friends if you want! I actually read a book called MWF Seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search for a New Best Friend . Its super funny and I think you would like it.
  21. I don't think anything is worth staying in a toxic environment. You need to look out for your mental health and happiness. This is definitely not normal and I can see why people leave. I think I would too. I understand grad school will have stress but this isn't healthy stress. Don't let anyone try to tell you this is "how things work".
  22. Tbh, I think your friend is going to have to cut their losses and just walk away. In my opinion, the legal fees and the hassle wouldn't be worth it. That's really unfortunate and speaks volumes about that department. She's better off going somewhere else or reapplying.
  23. I would have to say I've only seen/messaged two people in museum science? They are out there, or at least their results are. I assume that my field is super small/terminal so I guess that's to be expected.
  24. Haha no I haven't, I'm the worst at social media. There are like 5 mes online because I kept forgetting my login info so I couldn't delete them I was a myspace teen so it took me awhile to get on the facebook train
