  1. sooooooo anyone else not really studying for finals? I mean I'm studying but instead it's only for 4ish hours max instead of at least a week? I just don't care anymore ha. I can get a 50 on my physics final and still get a 75. I do yoga on and off at home. I don't like the idea of fitness classes, I rather be the only one who sees my grossness
  2. Yeah I would stick with self teaching but I'm a wuss . I would have to say structural geology was the hardest class I ever took. I was sooo close to a B! Yeah geology labs are brutal. did you ever have to make a thin section? I'm pretty sure those things shaved off a couple years of my laugh lol
  3. I'm just thinking of my igneous petrology class so many flashbacks.....run far away from geochemistry! Then again I hate chemistry
  4. @hippyscientist See I sweat a lot so I would get stuck on the furniture! We can't paint anything either and I love lamps. Lamps are one of my favorite things to buy, they can be fun and are practical. West elm is my dream and I hope one day to eventually be able to buy a light bulb from them
  5. @hippyscientist I was super confused that they even mention this to a perfect stranger! They even acknowledge they have had done it before...sooooo I pretty much was like uh nope g2g byes. And thanks! Yours does too. My personally pet peeve is super bulky leather furniture and brown. Tons and tons of brown. I like some color and pattern. Also I swear if I see one more random artistic antler piece on the internet I'm going to lose it.
  6. @hippyscientist Same here! I like to call my style comfortable, warm, mid-century/electric style......that's a thing right? Btw I had one possible landlord openly admit that they can lower the rent if we paid them in cash so they can avoid taxes......ummmm I rather not be an accessory to fraud
  7. Yeah I'm not exactly sure what my schedule is either! But then again their official deadline for the program is June so I was just super early haha. And Yes I'm very excited to move in! I'm going to have so much fun decorating! Now if only I had some money, damn you pretty expensive furniture. @hippyscientist Yeah that's the logical and rationally thing to do and my boyfriend has been promising me that we will eventually get a dog, so I'll have to wait. I guess I just have to be a creeper for awhile longer and just stare at other people's dogs haha
  8. After going through about 20-30 homes, we have finally got a place! Not pet friendly, i guess we will get a dog eventually sigh. Maybe a dog can be a graduation present . My childhood dog was the best friend I needed when I was growing up. I miss him daily. Thanks for letting me complain guys!
  9. I thought the graduate applications were bad, finding a house is so much more annoying....
  10. OMG you would think a small 1-3 bedroom house with laundry under a 1000 would be a reasonable goal......I've literally called 50 places. They either already have an application, don't have the washer/dryer, or they lie about their prices. I swear if buying a house is anything similar to this, I think I know understand the angst in all of those HGTV shows.
  11. @janetjanejune Thanks! He doesn't take it too personally, so thats good. He's just frustrated.
  12. I've been pulling 7:30-4:30 shifts all week and on-top of my school work. I'm exhausted, but sooooo close to graduation! Boyfriend got a call for a job interview.....in kansas. It was perfect too! If only that job could have been shifted to lubbock. He's starting to feel down, the job market is bad for geology right now. He spends a couple hours applying for jobs everyday. At least the guy who called sounded impressed by his resume, so heres hoping that's a good sign. At least, he is a veteran so that opens a lot more opportunities.
  13. Well I'm not in your area of study but I currently go to radford for my undergrad, graduating in a week! But The area is super nice, low cost of living, and there are plenty of walking/biking/hiking trails. There is a hospital right up the road and you would most likely get experience with the student health center. If you are looking for nightlife/city scene you would be disappointed. There aren't a lot of options, but the food is good around here! You would have to drive to blacksburg for more variety (30 mind drive). Sorry I can't be more helpful with your program.
  14. You should really straight up and ask them. Do you have any other schools? Maybe use them as a reason? "Hey I know you have said no final decision has been made, however, I need to give an answer to my other schools now". If you don't have a bargaining chip, all you can do is wait, i'm sorry!
  15. Loans and more loans if you didn't get any funding. You could get a part time job but I'm not sure if your university would allow that? I agree that the cost of schools/living is awful. That's why I didn't apply to certain schools because I knew there was no way I could afford them. Good luck!
  16. I'm not sure about the amount itself, but I know some of my friends' schools didn't waive fees. They waived everything else though! I think it all depends. But I think its high because you are an international student.
  17. Exactly, my boyfriend and I went through the same professors, program, and around the same time. I have a close relationship, a good relationship, and I'm friendly towards my other professors. Boyfriend went to school, did super well, and went home. He doesn't like to stop and chat, plus he views extracurriculars as silly.
  18. My boss/mentor and I get lunch together sometimes. I think we are very close, we have a grandfather/granddaughter relationship. Just this past weekend, I spent around 10 hours helping him off the clock to get the museum ready. I believe that my university will definitely lose someone great when he retires. No hugs though! I'm not a hugger. I love the vibe of my grad department so far.
  19. @rising_star Nope, but I'm about to! Thanks for the link.
  20. Thanks! I'm feeling only a little nervous but also excited. I was scrambling researching schools since my professors didn't know much about this field. This year feels like a blur, yet I still think I spent about a week total of lost sleep over this process.
  21. @Danger_Zone Thanks for the suggestion! I'm definitely more organized this time around compared to applying to undergrad schools. I was very "where ever is fine" and only applied to three in-state schools. The horror that would strike the rankings obsessed would be too much! I think it worked out fine since I was interning along with William & Mary Students, and Virginia Tech students
  22. @Danger_Zone I'm finishing up undergrad so there is things I need to do and I'm just ignoring them at the moment . My BS is in geology and I would like to specialize in community outreach and dealing with how museums could/can they have the same impact as popular culture does on the public regarding the image and conception of science. Supppper rough idea but I'm hoping it can actually be a good one
  23. I've sold all my textbooks backed after I used them and I usually break even or make a little money. Too bad it seems like school books are insanely expensive because they can get away with it.
  24. @Citizen of Night Vale I'm heading to Lubbock. if you like museums the perot museum of nature and science is pretty cool! @Meghanlodon Try selling and buying books off amazon, its much cheaper than buying them through a bookstore.
  25. @Meghanlodon Yay free boxes! And yeah money concerns are very common. From what I can tell you should be fine, you seem like a reasonable person! Maybe try to get a roommate? That would definitely help with the cost and I'm sure there are another people in similar situations (maybe someone in your program?) Since you aren't moving states away, a part time job would be a good idea.
