  1. Hey puffer fish! I randomly go on different forums because I get bored easily ha. Plus i've always admired people who helped people with speech problems. I had to do speech therapy for seven years so you guys make a huge difference. Anyways enough about me! Radford University is in the city of Radford. Its in the mountains and you will experience all four seasons there. Its a small town, there is a cute main street. Radford has a very low cost of living. Everyone is super friendly in Radford. There are plenty of parks and trails.

The cons. Since its a small own there aren't many shops/restaurants. The campus is walk-able and there are several places to eat that are walk-able. BTs is a good place to get a quick lunch. But undergrads easily overrun the place. The closest mall that has more than 5 stores is in Roanoke. That is a 40 min drive. Balcksburg is a bigger city and has a lot more to do, that is a 20ish min drive. There are shuttles that go to certain apartment complexes/surrounding areas to campus so if you don't want to walk to campus you won't have too!

Overall, I think Radford is great! But it isn't for everyone. Let me know if you have any other questions. Its definitely not an urban city/environment.

    1. Puffer Fish

      Puffer Fish

Oh hey, I think I figured out what happened to that PM I "didn't receive"! Haha. Still all good info though, thank you. :D

  2. If you have any questions about Radford and the surrounding area, let me know! I don't know much about the program but I did my undergrad at Radford. Good luck!
  3. @rhombusbombus Ah that sounds like the perfect nap situation but the worst at being productive! I have to have a cup of coffee with me so I don't fall asleep ha. I'm reading a book that's about grant writing/seeking. Its full of info so that's a good/bad thing . I feel like gaston at times "how can you read this without pictures?!"
  4. Ah well thats kinda awkward! Hopefully you guys mesh better after awhile. And my brain would melt too, just imagine the scene from Indiana Jones when the nazis faces are melting. I feel that one after just reading one chapter when it comes to textbooks.
  5. Yeah that sounds like a good timeline. It's similar to mine and everyone actually got back to me. I even had some phone calls with my POIs and it was a great experience. Also good luck! We may run into each other at conferences since I'm also interested in museum work.
  6. @rhombusbombus I'll try and give your roommate some slack. Yeah that was weird. But they most likely didn't really know what to say since its 1 am and they want to be friendly. Or they may be a sleep walker? I've done things like that multiple times and I was actually asleep. I wouldn't have known until the next day when my boyfriend told me. Maybe its because I'm awful at social cues?
  7. Yeah I know what you mean! I thought I was somehow missing it and felt like an idiot ha
  8. Yeah I talked to several people at my internship and they say cockroaches around here are active at night and come out after it rains. Our landlord also said he sprayed the place before we moved in. We haven't seen anything after we seal everything up, hope it stays that way! I swear when we finally get our own house that thing will have zero cracks. I know I took the outlets for granted! Luckily I don't have too many things that need an outlet. I only have a wand and a blow dryer. I barely use the wand.
  9. Yeah it was built in 1962! I actually didn't realize it until I went to plug in my blow dryer. @Danger_ZoneI think it is an old house thing. It doesn't really bother me too much. So my second bedroom is storage/me blowing my hair place ha.
  10. My place is old the landlord/layout are great. We had to seal up a lot of holes though. We saw/killed one cockroach and I've been paranoid ever since. I greatly dislike bugs and it freaks me out to see them in my home. Hopefully by sealing up the holes and constantly spraying bug killer, there won't be anymore incidents. The landlord is the best we have ever had. He has been prompt and has had things like the water heater replaced within a day. @Pink Fuzzy Bunny Sorry about the dog, that's lame! So far our neighbors have been quite. One complaint is that there's no outlet in the bathroom, so I have to blow dry my hair in the second bedroom.
  11. Wow you never hear about people staying so long at a company/organization. Idk if I'll be able to ever find a job and keep it for that long, I hope so!
  12. Pretty much! My mom has had people turn down her job offers because they were scared of her work ethic . I'm pretty sure the only cow my mom wants to see is one on her plate ha.
  13. @klader My mom grew up on a farm in south dakota, so i've heard all the stories about having to wake up at 4 am when its in the negatives to do manual labor. When most people meet my mom, they are shocked when they learned she grew up on a farm. She kept the work ethic but she left everything else . She hates the cold (anything below 70) and told my dad she would divorce him, if he went ahead and bought land/cows.
  14. @Danger_Zone Ah that sucks but I can see how it will mess up your immigration status. And don't feel bad, your cat will be fine! I missed my family dog so much butt he turned out ok and he still remembered me when I visited. He is the best friend anyone would want. @Pink Fuzzy Bunny Good news that you weren't in the car! sounds like some final destination experience. @MarineBluePsy Yeah I would get out of that house before you go all Jack Nicholson on them . @Neist yeah i bet that is a weird feeling. I feel weird not working at my old museum and I was only there for 3 years. But i think of it as my baby. I cant wait to see it when it finally opens!
  15. I just remember all the drill exercises i had to do as a kid if I did something wrong...My brother and I are similar in age so there wasn't much of a discipline difference. And of course we can't do much because then the parents will complain how we are mistreating their child. Working with the public is tough sometimes!
  16. Yeah maybe! But they seem interested in building the robots, and we do give them an hour to walk around the museum. We host three day camps and each day we visit the different floors of the museum. I just need to be patient! I feel bad though because some of the kids names have been difficult to pronounce and they get mad at him. My speech impediment is my biggest insecurity so I feel awful sometimes.
  17. @Effloresce Hopefully that gets fixed soon! Urg I know this isn't a venting thread but today was rough. My internship is reinforced my stance on no kids. I feel so old but in my day when an adult tells you to stop running, stop fighting, stop throwing stuff, stop yelling, you listen to the adult. They were 7-9 year olds so they should know better. It wasn't all of them but enough for me to want to throw myself off a cliff ha. When I did science days with kids back in Virginia, I never had a problem. I feel like my internship is going well though. I remember everyone's names and most of the kids seem to like me!
  18. As long as the guys have a higher tolerance to alcohol! Dean and doyle were super lightweights lol
  19. Bars have been more of a miss for me. I enjoy sports bars during football season, but im mainly there for the food . i enjoy restaurants where i can just order one drink and talk/hang out. breweries would be good but i hate beer lol
  20. I'm not a huge drinker but I do like a good martini! Screwdrivers are also really good. I haven't explored the bar scene in Lubbock. I would choose coffee over alcohol most of the time.I like drinking on patios vs a bar, I go to bed around 11:00 Pm.
  21. I agree with @sjoh197. That class seems to be the one you are really interested in. If not that class, I would choose remote sensing. You will most likely be exposed to equipment and its really fun stuff. I would stay away from Differential Equations, but thats because it looked awful haha. Bf took it and his assignments scared me. (I graduated with a bachelors in geology)
  22. @Danger_Zone I know how you feel! Bf and I would be married but he's worried about his parents' health. Besides we have our whole lives to be married. There's no rush really. But I've seen that requirement for some places as well. Or they ask for a bigger deposit if you aren't married. Its lame.
  23. @sjoh197 I hate being the bearer of bad news but it looks like your bf's actions are really telling. Sometimes its really hard to change a part of your personality/habits. I was on the other side of the fence in this situation. My bf felt he was doing everything and was being taken advantage of. He's really good at cooking and cleaning. Sometimes I can be dense in the head and not even really notice how he was doing everything. We've had the same talk. I slack a little but I took my partner's feelings into account and I'm trying. I usually do the laundry, wash dishes, vacuum, cook a little and other cleaning. He does DEEP cleaning, majority of cooking, and fixing stuff. Maybe give him time to change his habits? I don't know if someone can change so quickly. But I agree that is hurtful that he didn't listen to what you were actually saying. But I would look at his actions and that will tell you everything. Btw never settle for less! Of course you aren't over the moon happy everyday, but you should be content with your relationship. We are here for you.
