  1. Do not take up space in a decent country with your brainwashed canadian background. Stay put in canada.
  2. I don't want to live with neighbours who make hyena noises at night. I want food. I want to take back time. I don't want any of my life.
  3. I do not understand enough to even ask questions or ask for help.

    PhD Horror Story

At the point where she had been made to go through all of this hell and was doing the last submission things, and one of the deans scolded her because she forgot to fill in a line, I cracked up because that is exactly the kind of insanity and disgraceful behaviour that I have witnessed.
  5. Thank you so much! Yes it is so difficult and confusing.
  6. Thank you fuzzy, this is helpful as always!
  7. Hello, I've received an email which says to check my CAQ application for a new message. There was a red new message blinking thing. It could not be clicked on. I logged out and in, turned off Adblock, etc. and currently there is just nothing. No message, no letter, no idea if refused or accepted., and nothing on forums similar to my problem. Anyone has an idea what to do? Thank you.
  8. There is a person who makes me feel everything good I have should really just belong to somebody else.
  9. Maybe the idea is better implemented in some systems than others and it has not been so in my experience. The only time I ever got a relatively good grasp of things and produced good work was when I was left completely alone.
  10. I do not think you can judge a grieving student like this. AND the first year juggling four-five roles is not enough to judge somebody by. Professors forget vitally important things all the time, yet nobody tells them they need to go find another job. It is merely assumed that it is everybody else's job to remind them of things, and most of the time, everybody does (the secretary, the assistants, etc). If you are at the bottom of the hierarchy and do not have a strong support network, it is not shocking to have difficulties. Conversely, being extremely good at details can also show that somebody is not a good researcher if they get lost in them.
  11. It must be obvious that there is no such thing as learning all there is to learn. I believe learning and being graded are separate things. Getting review for your work until it is of publishable quality, yes, being given 'assignments' and then being graded on them, no. This also has to do what you start with after undergrad. Undergrads are treated as babies and given clear, dumbed-down solutions where what they need to be trained in is pointing out messy problems. You could take this back a long way. I find a lot of things about formal education bizarre.
  12. I think grading graduate students is weird. I got horrible grades for most of my classes, but once done with them, produced work judged to be of remarkably high quality. I also find the very idea of a master's programme difficult to understand (at least, in a theoretical field). You are either sitting there and learning (undergrad), or producing work which makes a theoretical contribution to the field.
  13. I will have to go and make the best of it. I'm not complaining about the school I am going to either, just the location will make life something to cope with rather than enjoy for five years. That's all. I would likely be happy at Oxford. Thank you for explaining the workings of the ertegun thing. They really should make that clear, and also send a bulk email for rejections. They are rude and unclear. On the web page it says "if you have not received an email by the end of April, then blah blah". So what do people do, sit on their hands for a month to work out it's a no?
  14. It's about the same climate. I did not write a post about this to explain to you why I make the choices I make. I wrote because I earned the right to an option that makes me happier, and I cannot really have it because of funding problems. Do you also need colour pens?
  15. Well it can be horrible if it is very far away from where you want to be. It's not the case that I'm trying to insult bits of land.
  16. Thank you Fuzzy, it is nice to have talked about it.
  17. Absolutely no way of hanging around here, so as you say, I will have to learn to be happy with what I have and make things pleasant around me. However, at this point I am so tired. Thank you for being helpful.
  18. Thank you, but I have to go. I cannot take any time off. I believe I could possibly apply when I am already some way into the funded program, but reference letters and that you do not stick to what you have started, I don't think it would work. Maybe even hurt me. I would sell my soul to the devil to get funding for Oxford.
  19. Because I didn't get the only funding for Oxford I could apply to as an overseas student, I am just bawling like a child. Linguistics does not get any funding unless you are doing something politically trendy. My funded (and rather prestigious) option is on a horrible continent. I love my potential supervisors and some of the work going on at the department, but that is it. The place I cannot cope with. I am just crying all the time.
  20. Anybody accepted to Oxford? Anybody studying there? Just got my letter of acceptance!
  21. I hope you get accepted to a programme that will make you happy!
  22. That could be a reason, socio getting very popular. You might get an answer yet. I do phonology.
  23. game of thrones, pictures of cats wearing human clothes or made to pose doing human things, the correct comments and correct jokes for your echo chamber.
  24. You're very welcome. They should be happy enough with your GPA if they've got any sense at all. Personally I think it is also possible to pull off a 4.00 only because you do not question things and therefore are flawless at giving back exactly what you have been told in exams. It sounds like your work is promising, too.I believe you can ask for feedback in a carefully worded letter from people who rejected you. It was discussed in some thread somewhere. What is the subfield?
