I have approached prospective advisors that I honestly felt connection to, be it their work or philosophy, whatever. This has given me a range of responses: from positive feedback, encouragement, to being told the program was competitive and to make sure I apply broadly. I always had the most in common with those who replied favorably. Never got into a school though, so there is that Hoping this year is different. Good luck.

That sounds very similar to what I did. I tailored each SOP to that specific school and revised my writing sample. Also did not bother with the GRE. (Very very sorry to hear about the loss in your family.) That's really interesting about the reapps being common. Feels good to hear that. I think this year is definitely stronger than last, but given that I struck out majorly last year, I don't want to get my hopes up! Hoping you get in to a program this year. Crossing fingers!

@louisamae oh for sure! If you've submitted everything then you probably have nothing to worry about. It takes them a minute to match everything/verify. best of luck!

@MaytheSchwartzBeWithYouYou were here last year, right? Me too. What did you do to improve your application package? For me, I focused on my statement of purpose. I also didn't have to study for the GRE this time so I wasn't in as much of a frenzy. I decided to narrow down my school list to only a select few departments that absolutely had overlapping interests. Abandoned reach schools and plan B+C schools. Just cut to the chase. Haha. What about you?

@louisamae any time I have weird issues with apps I check admissions FAQ on the GSAS website. They usually have a procedure for if your question can't be answered (which is 99.99% just emailing the office). Don't stress! They get tons of inquiries just like yours and technical issues are very common. It is my second year applying and I remember all sorts of things happening, freaking out, etc., and the solution was super simple. good luck!

based on years prior, looks like our results may start rolling in around the end of the month (for some schools) and concentrate in feb. Wow! I can't really believe the decisions are so close.

What is your educational background? What are your future goals? I feel that if I were in your situation I wouldn't take it. The unpaid thing and living in NY is a tremendously difficult thing to do. Even with family support it is basically unmanageable. I don't want to be negative at all because honestly if you really want to, it can be done and if it is super prestigious then I understand the allure here. What are your other options?

I'm not qualified to answer this, since I'm not on any committee, but I would imagine that if it were to boil down as a toss up between you and another candidate, maybe then the GRE might come into play (to arbitrate strength)...I could be wrong. I like to think GRE isn't as important as we all think, but who knows.

I still haven't heard from ucsb! Crazy!
-
@saturness my thoughts exactly! They must at least know who is rejected...ugh.
-
thanks @lotte-laserstein! super helpful.

I asked UCSB for an update and they said decisions will be made by the 15th. I wasn't invited to their visitors day/weekend...does this mean I'm NOT rejected? Lol...so desperate. Thanks

So only 8 more years of adjuncting to go! Lol. Thanks @mxborder for the info.

this just ruined my life

can one of my fellow rejects from Michigan pm me? question about the rejection letter. thanks!!

All I know is (and I don't know much) I would want a program where everyone supported me and made my research a priority. Based on what you've described, I feel that you would literally SOAR at program X. Program Y may not care about you as much. Reading this scenario is a no-brainer to me.

thanks!!

@futurestandysgrad no idea and in the same boat. I was trying to gather if the rejected applicants had been interviewed or not to kind of get an idea of what the silence means. thanks for the input! and good luck.

To those who received rejection letters from Michigan last week, were you previously interviewed/waitlisted/a potential admit/invited to open house? Or was it out of nowhere? Sorry for the news, my round has been bad. Best of luck.

Out of curiosity, has anyone accepted or turned down any offers?

Thanks OP for offering some perspective and lending a vision of hope, or at least trying
