  1. I recently finished my bachelors at an university and am interviewing for clinical psychology PhD programs. I recommend checking out the APA website for more information on different career paths. These two links explain different specialities in the mental health field and provide information in undergraduate education: http://apa.org/ed/precollege/index.aspx http://apa.org/ed/graduate/specialize/recognized.aspx The second link has a list of APA recognized specialities, and you can click on them and see more information on each. If you have more specific questions and want subjective answers feel free to private message me. I have friends in social work, experimental psychology, mental health rehabilitation, clinical psychology, forensic psychology, and neuroscience. Thus, I can provide my perspective on these subfields. Also, I wouldn't hesitate contacting someone within the psychology department at your perspective schools about the curriculum and other questions you may have. Hope this helps!
  2. I would consider knowing general research interests of everyone you'll be interviewing with, but know more in depth about your top three. Depending on how you completed your application (like selected advisors to look at your application) and/or if you included advisors in your statement of purpose, the additional interviewers (the ones you aren't particularly interested in) will probably be aware that your research interests don't match with theirs. My advisor explained to me that in cases like this they are interviewing you for other reasons such as general fit with the program, abilities, past experience, etc. Being prepared in general for all of them would be important because they will all be evaluating you, but I think focusing your efforts (e.g., reading their past work) on your top three would be a good idea. I would still ask an experienced mentor (like a past advisor) for advice as well.
  3. That's awesome! Who are you interviewing with (if you're comfortable sharing and feel free to PM me)? Do you have any specific questions? I can ask one of my friends when I see her today. Congrats on the interview
  4. Is this school a cohort model by chance? It sounds like the university of north Dakotas clinical program (where I got my undergrad degree). For their interview process, you interview with a few POIs and choose by the end of their first semester whom they want to work with. Anyways, I'm happy to reach out to some of my friends who are in UNDs grad program to see what their interview experience was like. Feel free to PM me!
  5. Ditto. I understand if they're still making a decision of course, but if they've made decisions and are not going to extend an invitation an email would be nice. Cross it off our lists.
  6. Thanks for discussing piercings within this forum. I have an eyebrow piercing, which is obviously visible in comparison to my ear piercings. The program I'm interviewing at (IIT - clinical psychology) is rather liberal, and I have heard from friends going to IIT's clinical psych program that someone within their cohort has large gaged ears. My advice from my advisor is to play it safe as well. For clinical psych interviewees it comes across as being conscientious of varying situations (e.g., professional) and can be related to a person's openness to adjust their appearance for such situations. He gave the example of clinicians needing to come across as less individualized so to be approachable by a diverse array of clients. For the record, my advisor does not care about piercings and forgot (after working with me for three years) that I even had my eyebrow pierced until I broached this topic with him. He suggested taking my piercing out for my actual interviews with my POI and then replacing my usual rod with a clear retainers for the remainder of interview day. He also is very close with my POI (went to undergrad together, researched in same lab for 6 years, etc.) and said he doubts my POI will be concerned with a piercing but that my POI would at least appreciate my conscientious to take out the piercing for an interview. As for tattoos, my are all easily coverable as long as my hair is down/partly down, so my advisor said not to worry. He did caution that eventually as a professional and someday a clinician I may have to take my piercing out altogether, especially when practicing in a clinic. Anyways. . . I thought I'd share my experience
  7. Check out UNC's website. Looks like all interview invites for clinical have been sent out!
  8. It looks like someone did on the 18th according to the results page. Here's the link http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=Psychology+Florida+ Scroll to the near bottom and someone listed an interview invite for their clinical program!
  9. I couldn't find a thread discussing conference travel grants for psychology. Most psychology departments and colleges have grants available for student travel. However, a thread discussing outside grants could be beneficial for researchers who do not have access to department/college grants. I'm presenting researching at an upcoming conference (International Conference on Eating Disorders, ICED). I am having difficulty finding any travel grants available for such a conference since I am currently a post-bacc researcher. Does anyone have suggestions for where I could find travel grants? I'm aware of a psi chi travel grant, but I am waiting to here back from an email when the grant will be open for applications. Also, this grant wouldn't be awarding money until after my conference (which could be fine, I'll take what I can get).
  10. psyc88, would you mind private messaging the POI or what area of research he/she is involved with?
