Has anyone heard from UNL? I have only seen one post on the results search and the poster specified that the POI was not in the clinical department. -

Not at all! I'm interested in multicultural psychology, specifically interracial friendships. I am also interested in marital satisfaction. And yourself? I wish you the best of luck! -

After feeling so hopeless, I was invited to an interview at one of my top choices. My last round of applications (2 years ago), I received zero interview invitations so I am feeling relieved. Hopefully there is more good news (or any news at all) to come shortly! This process is so stressful. -

Fall 2017 Clinical Psychology Applicants

That's great. I love the program's breadth of research areas. My focus is not with their trauma center so we are probably not applying to the same POIs. I wish you the best of luck in your applications!! -
Fall 2017 Clinical Psychology Applicants
HopefullyDr replied to FacelessMage's topic in Psychology Forum
I think every program handles age differently. I am 23 and I have my MA in psych. I have been told my age will likely not be a factor for some schools, but that it could be a factor in others. I am happy to apply anyway and see what happens! -
Fall 2017 Clinical Psychology Applicants
HopefullyDr replied to FacelessMage's topic in Psychology Forum
So nervous! I submitted my first application last night and I couldn't sleep. I am hoping that everything works out in the end. Currently drinking chamomile tea. -
I'm applying for next year as well. I have decided that this year will be my last time applying, as it has been stressful enough going through the process twice. I am taking the GRE once more on 10/24 and am really hoping to get scores in the high 150's for V/Q. I have been studying a lot so hopefully it will happen. I am graduating from my MA program in January, which I think may help my application this time around. I also have increased my research experience to two full years, with an additional independent research study that I presented at my university's conference. I have also spent this year as a TA and as a workshop leader for research poster construction, which should reflect well on me. My GPA is not very good (3.5), but I am prepared to talk about it in an interview. I am concerned about my applications primarily because, aside from presenting at the conference, I do not have any publications. I am also concerned because I only have one summer's worth of clinical experience. I am confident about the schools that I have chosen for research fit and I have reached out to all POIs. The fear of rejection is hitting me hard today. If I don't get into a program, I will definitely be devastated.

NYU General Psychology masters - thoughts?
HopefullyDr replied to Jenny1992's topic in Psychology Forum
Hello, I'm currently in the MA Psychology program at NYU. There are incredible resources available here and also the opportunities for research experience and sponsorship is great. Most of the people in my program studied psychology for their undergrad and are working towards publishing as much as possible through the university. I was rejected from the Ph.D program and was offered the MA and quickly accepted. I have no debt from my undergrad degree so the cost of the student loans wasn't too scary for me. Several of my classmates have been accepted into PhD programs for social (at University of Florida), neuroscience (UC-Davis), and some even medical school (Northwestern). I'm also planning to apply for doctoral programs in the fall and this program has already strengthened my application for research experience and networking. There's no doubt that it is expensive, but my application needed a boost, and I also wanted the two years to sharpen my academic skills before applying to a doctoral program again. -
Definitely. I am working with my advisor to be more prepared. I am research-focused and will be tailoring SOP's to each program. Differences in programs are due to a few clinical POI's who incorporate social psych in their research.

I'll share also. UG GPA 3.9, BSc in psychology. Current graduate GPA (MA psych) is 3.5, planning to bump it to a 3.7 by graduation in December. Took the GRE once, 155,151,4.5. Going to take it again in June and am aiming for the 160-170's in V/Q, 5 in writing. Have been studying since January. One year research experience in UG, began further lab experience in January, including peer review assisting and pilot study critiquing, one first author poster, and am beginning two more lab positions in the summer at a top university. Will be graduating in December, LoR's will not be difficult, and all of my experience is related to my specific research interests. Interested in family and couple research, so I am applying to social psychology programs and clinical psychology programs.

My current MA GPA is 3.5. That is just from my first semester. I have two more semesters after this one and have completed my core requirements already. I am predicting the GPA to rise as I continue with the program. @Amelie I think that may have been my problem! I did not realize it then but I was not nearly as specific as I should have been in last year's applications. I now am reading the current research from my POI's and am hoping to form stronger matches with them from understanding the work on a deeper level.

This poses another question for me. If I continue to use a LOR from my undergraduate university in my application post-graduate school, is that beneficial for my application? I am definitely trying to strengthen myself in the application process. I very much know what I want to research for my career and can only hope that the work will pay off!

Thanks for all of the responses. Last year I did not get any interviews. I also was very ambitious, had only taken the GRE one time, and rushed my application process after leaving the first MA program I was involved in. I don't think I completely knew how time-consuming the application process was. I am now focusing on working with a tenured professor on an editing committee and am involving myself in further research this year. I will be graduating in December of this year and am stacking my CV as much as possible. Also, I am quitting my restaurant job to make space for extra research jobs. I hope that I can get into a Ph.D program next year, now that I have an idea of what the application process looks like. I will also be re-writing my SOP with a tenured professor mentoring me with it. Maybe obtaining stronger LOR will help also?

My BS is in Psychology, 3.9 GPA, I have over a year research/intern experience, but was rejected from all Ph.D programs last year. I am currently in my first year of my MA Psychology degree with a 3.5 GPA. I will be retaking the GRE in April and will be graduating with my MA in December this year. I want to apply to clinical ph.d programs again this fall, but I am nervous about whether my MA will help/hurt my application. Currently I am pursuing more research experience while I prepare for Fall 2017 applications. Also, how much does the rank of your current university affect the application for doctoral programs? Should I also rewrite my personal statement? Also, I understand that the most important piece of the application process is goodness of fit with professors of interest. I am specifically concerned with competitiveness of the application in addition to being a good fit for the program's research prospects.
