Hi, so you're in luck! I have worked the front desk of this hall. The location is very convenient, staff is nice and you'll always have someone there to receive packages. Both the two and 4 bedrooms are very similar just depends on rent and how many people you want to live with. All furnished and pretty new. You get your own bathroom I'm pretty sure. Many of the students who live here are international students (a large majority are Asian), so you'd likely have another international student living with you. The building is very secure with gates that are opened with your student ID (must be living there to have access). Also they have tons of maintenance people so if there's ever any problems (things broken, water issues, bugs, etc) you can submit a request online and they can normally fix it within 24-48 hours after Bike wise tucson is a very bike friendly town! If you bike on campus only, there's tons of bike paths. Most roads have bike lanes as well. The roads aren't maintained super well, there's lots of pot holes, so I wouldn't suggest the kick scooter on the roads, but you could easily ride it on a sidewalk. If you have any specific questions feel free to message me!

I think for the dinner it is totally fine to have visible. It shows your personality and who you are, and it is not in an interview arena, but with current students like you said. They'll be more receptive and I bet it wouldn't even phase them. (If it helps I have 3 tattoos, one of which is rather large and is visible if I wear certain clothing and I would let it show if that article of clothing seemed appropriate for the same situation).

My letter writer came through and submitted just in time! I was getting soo nervous for a little there. But now I'm in the same boat as everyone else, except I don't really have much more free time since school started back up again. So i'm going to try to find time to start reading up more on genetic issues while also staying on top of my readings for class lol.

Omgosh same! It was the worst cliff hanger. Unfortunate Events is only 8 episodes so you'd definitely be able to finish it all on Monday. Oh that's super awesome! I point out different formations and types of rocks and ask how they were formed or what type they are. He's really interested in mining, as long as that stays profitable, but he also has a BA in PoliSci that he already finished, so he's possibly hoping to tie the two together and go into mining law. And thank you!

Well for one, A Series of Unfortunate Events just got put on today and I just finished the first episode and I am in love. This show called Helix was really good and dealt with genetics, it follow CDC scientists as they go to various outbreaks and try to create cures (very unnatural/impossible situations arise but it's a Syfy show so what do you expect?), Stranger Things, 3%, Narcos, Orange is the New Black, Jane the Virgin (this is hilarious), Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (also super funny), and Black Mirror if your into super weird shows (the first episode is very... odd, I suggest skipping it, but the rest are very good. Deals with technology and it's implications and possibilities of it in the future). Haha that was probably more than you ever cared for. But I am super stoked on the Grand Canyon. My boyfriend and I are going as an early birthday present, we're staying the night and just going to take it all in. He's majoring in Geology so he's pretty excited too (though he's been before).

I'll join in! I'm about to turn 22 next week, currently finishing up my B.S. at the University of Arizona in Molecular & Cellular Biology. I'm a military brat and have lived in 7 different places, but now call Arizona home. When I'm not studying for school, I also work part-time as the manager of the front desk of one of the residence halls on campus. Hobbies include excessive netflixing, trying new restaurants, and hanging out with my boyfriend and his pet dog. Something fun that I am doing this weekend to distract myself on all the application deadlines is going to the Grand Canyon for the first time!

Really excited to almost be done with the application process. I just have to finish up the supplemental application for CSU and I'm done with all my GC apps! While I was looking around on various GC stuff online I found a cool blog! It's focused at prospective and current GC students and has a lot of good info on how to decide on programs, readings, interviews of GC in different specialties, etc. https://mapsandgenes.wordpress.com/2014/02/10/best-resources-for-your-best-practice-anna/ This link goes to a post about different books, some textbooks and others just for fun, that I thought someone might be interested in since we'll have some more free time coming up, but I definitely suggest checking out some of their other posts.

I found super cute winter coats at both Target and Kohl's that would work well over a business outfit! Think wool (or wool blend/multi-media blends for us poor-er folks) peacoats. Double breasted always looks a little classier. Here's a couple examples: http://www.target.com/p/women-s-speckled-faux-wool-jacket-navy-collection-b/-/A-51359680 or http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2668481/juniors-urban-republic-hooded-faux-fur-wool-jacket.jsp or http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2353086/urban-republic-juniors-wool-peacoat.jsp?color=Navy or http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2501470/womens-croft-barrow-double-breasted-wool-blend-peacoat.jsp?color=Black (I was just looking for one myself so here's a couple that I was debating between) And definitely look into booties, they're also much more comfortable than regular heels!

I had a professor in Chemistry that was literally covered in tattoos (chest, arms, anywhere visible there was a tattoo). I went to a talk of hers and it turned out that she was originally set to work in a research lab (i.e. not a visible area where her tattoos really didn't matter), but of course took a turn in that life path and ended up loving teaching more. She's an esteemed professor and from my knowledge is not looked down upon. Students love her and she gets along great in her department from what I can tell. But as others have pointed out, it could differ between institutions, different areas of the country etc.

Awesome! That helps me out a lot. And yes, the application states " Please provide a one page personal statement which explains your motivation for seeking a graduate degree in the Biomedical Sciences. This statement should discuss your professional career goals, your interest in science and why you are interested in obtaining your graduate degree at The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston." So, I did include what was asked from that prompt as well. My first post was more in reference to what was listed on the GC website, but thanks for making sure! I appreciate all the information you've been able to provide

With the semester finally over I can spend time finishing up my last few applications. I have one question @UTGC might be the best one to answer. UTHealth doesn't have much information in regards to the personal statement besides including relevant advocacy and volunteer experience in it/one page. Do you think it's okay for me to submit a single-spaced statement? All my other statements have been double spaced, but I had more pages to work with. UTHealth is currently my top choice so I want to have as much space as possible to dazzle.

Late LOR for Stanford and UIUC
AspiringGC replied to berzentine's topic in Letters of Recommendation
It might be different between departments, but my application for Stanford was due December 6th, but after I submitted my application I received an email that stated: "Please note that we continue to accept official transcripts, GRE/TOEFL scores (paired 2-3 weeks after application is submitted online), and letters of recommendation through the first week of January. We will notify all applicants of incomplete applications by January 6th." Either way, good luck! -
I'm glad you liked it! My father lives in Cincinnati, so I toyed with the idea of applying there, but I just couldn't see myself living there for 2 years.

I would look on both of their websites sites, most tell you what GPAs/GRE scores a strong/successful applicant had for admission. I know for example UTHealth states a strong applicant has a 3.5 cGPA and around the 75%ile for GRE scores, even though they have a minimum 3.0 GPA and no minimum GRE score. Also reading through the student profiles on their websites might be beneficial. The process itself is very holistic, so your grades, GRE score, and experience alone can get you an interview, but doesn't necessarily mean you'll be accepted based on a number of other reasons, such as how you may have done in the interview, if you'll connect/fit with your cohort and so many other things that we can't foresee. I am also in the same boat of applying for Fall 2017 admission, so comparing your stats to mine, I'd say you have a much better chance, but again it's more than just your numbers. ----- I finally asked another teacher for the fourth recommendation I need for UCDenver and I told her I'd have my application in within 2 weeks (a week ago) since Denver doesn't send out the link for the LORs until after the entire application is submitted. So I'm stressing on that and I still need to perfect my SOP for them and I have like a week to do it before I have to start making excuses (which I am not going to let myself do).

He just directed me to the actual application for the essay questions. So I am going off the vague " Describe your motivation and plans for graduate study and a professional career, and discuss how this program will contribute to them" found on the application and "describe your past achievements, experience relevant to your proposed study in the field of genetic counseling, and future plans for graduate study and a professional career in genetic counseling" found on the brochure for my statement. And no, he didn't mention anything about length, but I also didn't ask. I am trying to keep it around 2 pages double spaced.

I am using Chrome as well and I tried in IE and the same thing happened. The only time it happens is when I click Admit Requirements, the rest of the links work perfectly. The Program Administrator did email me back and answered my personal statement questions. So, he knows about the website issue, so hopefully it will get fixed soon. I'm not sure why it's happening.

I am not sure anyone else is applying to UC Denver's program, but I was wondering if you were having issues with their website? Everytime I try to navigate passed the homepage it prompts me to log in. Because of this I have only been using the brochure on the main page as my guide to applying and it says that their personal statement is actually a series of essay questions that they want answered, but I can't find these anywhere on the application (or the website obviously). I just emailed the Program Administrator, but I wanted to see if anyone else was in the same boat. (I am only stressing so much because the application needs to be submitted before the links for the LOR is sent out).

I attended Stanford's webinar today and what they said about the GRE is that it is important. This is because they don't want to train students who then cannot pass the required board exam, which is also a standardized exam. But that this can still supplemented with a higher GPA and experience. I'd say if you have at least in the 50th %iles or higher you'd be more than fine, especially with the huge amount of experience that you have.

Posting again: But I finally asked all of my LOR writers if they would write my letter and they all said yes! UCDenver requests 4 LOR, so I am still debating on who to ask for that one (probably the supervisor of my internship [I doesn't actually interact with her, she simply reads my bi-monthly journals, which is why she isn't one of the 3 I already asked], but also thinking about asking a teacher I took a small colloquium style class with, or my Bioethics teacher from last year, not really sure who would be best...). Asides from that, I perfected my resume and uploaded that to every open application (I believe CSU is the only one still closed?), submitted one application (Oklahoma has you email in the Resume and Personal Statement), and basically just need to perfect my Personal Statement and I could submit almost all of my applications! I feel much less stress after meeting with my GC mentor/one of my LOR writers, she told me she'd be surprised if I didn't get in this cycle, and she's not the type of woman to sugar coat things or say something just because you want to hear it, so that made me extremely happy. --- Has anyone had trouble with taking their personal statement to their university's writing center and they didn't give very good advice? On top of always having to spend some time explaining what genetic counseling is, my last "tutor" I had told me to say a lot of cliche things in my statement that I've been told not to do by people who actually know what they're talking about. The only thing useful I got out of the appointment was that I needed to make my statement more "personal" and I found some areas that I could cut out (which is needed since some schools only want 500 words).
