So I got my firs official rejection. Checked the Cambridge portal and it said “unsuccessful”. The fit wasn’t as good as with Oxford but I liked the idea of doing a 3 year PhD closer to home. So far I’ve been rejected or implied rejected by 3 places that were middle or bottom of my list for one reason or another, but more and more I think I should have taken the advice I was given and aimed lower. Definitely thinking I might get shut out but it won’t really hit until I get rejected by my top schools (Yale, Oxford, Columbia). -

2018 venting thread

I got back to my apartment Saturday night and my roommate had moved out while I was away (1 of 4). He left the bathroom a mess, food in the fridge, basically shit everywhere and because we were all away at different times no one knew what was his so it’s just been rotting away. Like why don’t you jus throw your stuff out? -

Yeah I’m unsubscribing from everything because I keep getting messages from airlines and uber and stuff. Also woke up to an email from UCLA admissions telling me to consider applying for an MBA... Is this an implied rejection? Am I so good that other departments want me? Is it a random spam mail? Yes to all. -

A flood of comp lit results were posted today, I assume by one person, but I think they’re all from programs we knew about already. Guess that implied Stanford rejection is becoming more and more real. -
I'm anxious and pessimistic with a shot of hopeful self-delusion, but I also am yet ti hear anything concrete. Wonder how people who have an acceptance under their belt are feeling as it must make the whole ordeal taste different. I assume every week will be different as we enter February so prepare for more transmissions!

Landed in the US, switch phone on, 7 voicemails and several calls in the past week from one number, all scams. -
-GRE Subject test -Outrageous fees. -Physical and official transcripts -All schools should require the same sample and SoP length and should require an extensive prompt and/or samples for us to work from -Any pre-set invisible factors should be made visible (i.e. Americanists need not apply this term, we placed 3 last cycle -Collate review data and offer feedback to condidates who wish to receive it -Homogenized portals, deadlines, set response dates, etc. I am applying to a scholarship in my home country to fund my studies and they have extensive information on how review panels are composed, what factors are considered (e.g. is this your first time studying overseas), they send back some info to rejected and accepted candidates (all parts of the app are graded out of 4 or 10, so you are told if your SoP and letters of recommendation and eveything ranked in what percentile compared to other candidates) AND they let you know WHEN YOU APPLY when the results will be in, to the minute. So it can be done, and they receive more apps and have more moving parts than any department.

Yes. I applied to Stanford, Princeton, Cornell, Harvard, Yale, and UCLA. My area is African diaspora, trauma and philosophy (French and English). Still waiting on responses from everyone, although Stanford is an implied rejection. -
Anyone else married with children?
WildeThing replied to Daenerys's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yes. I got accepted into an MA and my partner got a research assistantship while she did her PhD so she stayed behind and we separated for 2 years. It was very hard at first but it is certainly something you grt used to, though we were lucky that I got long fall and summer breaks to go back. I certainly don’t recommend it and would never do it again, but if your relationship is solid it is something you can survive.
