Saying Yes with applications outstanding
WildeThing replied to ArtOfNumbers's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Aren’t (most) universities beholden to the graduate agreement that says that offers that involve funding cannot be required before April 15th? -
2018 App Crunch Time
WildeThing replied to Pezpoet's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
My final application is sent (had the LOVELY opportunity of reducing an already reduced writing sample by nearly a third of its length to satisfy the word (yes, word, not page) limit). All the letters are in, now we wait. Does anyone know how important or useful the Fall reports are? My university has not responded about mending a course misspelling on my transcript so I have been waiting on that before sending them in. -
2018 App Crunch Time

English programs call? That’s convenient seeing as I’m out of the country. I bet every single program has already selected me but becsuse I’m not picking up they’re moving on. -
The international deadline depended on when the program deadline was, so Jan 4th for me.

I made a list for myself based on results on GradCafe last year. I just searched for each program and posted and usually chose the latest date on there, so as to not stress myself out if the date passes and I haven’t heard back (bound to happen). It is by no means scientific or accurate, and only involves the programs I applied to, but: Stanford/Berkeley - Mar. 22 Cambridge/Yale - Mar. 9 Michigan - Mar. 6 Brown/NYU/Oxford/Princeton/Rutgers - Mar. 1 Columbia - Feb. 28 Penn - Feb. 27 Cornell - Feb. 24 Virginia - Feb. 20 CUNY - Feb. 17 Harvard - Feb. 16 Chicago - Feb. 10 UCLA - Feb. 2 (Note that UCLA pushed its deadline back by a month, so maybe this year they will take longer) Also I dunno what the deadlins were last year and that might be relevant.

2018 Blooper Real*

I misspelled Charles Chesnutt as Chestnutt in my SoP. -
I’m applying to several programs this cycle and my wife will accompany me to wherever I get accepted. She is currently completing her PhD in Clinical Psychology in Spain and I was hoping to look for employment opportunities for her but I’m not really sure where to start. Do we look for postdocs? Would she be able to practice? Can anyone guide us a bit as to where we can look for the best opportunities? We are not very picky as at the beginning we just want to be able to cover our expenses and after the first year or two start a more focused search. I realize advice will vary depending on where we go as different campuses and cities have different cultures but I was wondering if anyone could offer some general guidelines.

How long are interviews? I did some research last semester where I interviewed 20 people (some in person some by phone). Each interview was 5 to 20m, transcribing took me about double that time at least, but my method was rudimentary and only considered the words themselves. So, maybe? Transcribing can take a long time.

Congratulations to your husband and permanent congratulations to any sliver of good news that is posted here in the next few months. I am also one of those constantly checking portals every night just in case. -

Thanks! Also, I see you’re interested in psychoanalysis, have you contacted Gabriel Reisner at Buffalo? I met him at a conference and he was very nice. -
So, I submitted my application right before the deadline (Jan 4th). I uust checked the portal and it says that it’s being reviewed by the degree committee. The website suggests that this means hat it has been approved by the department but that is impossible given the timeline. Does anyone know how this process works exsctly? Do some depsrtments bypass the department approval?

And so... it has begun. -
In Spain it is perfectly acceptable to submit 3 articles in lieu of a thesis, whether you intend to stay or not, so long as your advisor is OK with it and the articles are submitted at a certain level of publication. Didn’t know it was a thing in the US since I assumed that all those who start a humanities PhD do so with the intention to go into academia, even if it doesn’t work out for everyone. What career paths take a PhD as desired training?

Oh my god, seeing this stressed me out, like I still have one more app to send! Here’s to this thread being a source of happiness for everyone who enters it. -
Most of my sources aren’t digitized, are available for short periods, and need to be consulted simultaneously as I work from different work spaces. I need to have all the citations available verbatim, not so much for text insertion, but to be able to consult the relevant passages of a text without needing to have the text with me. I’m not sure there’s much streamlining I can do so I’m interested in seeing if throwing money at the problem can save me that extra work.
-
Do you have a suggestion?
-
Anyone use it or any similar device? How is it? If it works it would be a great way to save time as Whenever I write a paper I spend a lot of time highlighting quotes and then typing them verbatim on the computer.

The future of comp/lit...
WildeThing replied to communistswine's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
One of my professors is a comp/lit graduate in an English dept. She strongly recommended I apply only to English depts rather than comp lit because complit people have it harder in the job market (the complit depts are dying), and this is from someone who is heavily involved in one of the big complit orgs. I applied anyway but it definitely seems to be a riskier choice. -
