  1. Congrats on that! I applied as well - which PI did you apply for?
  2. I started one about a month ago, but I don't think anyone responded! So let's try to make this one more successful! I am applying to UNC Chapel Hill & Rutgers. Good luck to you too!
  3. I don't think your GPA will be a problem, given your stellar GRE scores. I think you are a competitive candidate, but what could break your neck is the lack of research experience, but it also depends a lot on the school and faculty you're applying to. Overall, I do think you should definitely give it a shot!
  4. Hi y'all, I worked on an independent research project for my Masters thesis with Prof 1 and Prof 2 as my advisors. Now, I am applying to be a PhD student for Prof 1. I don't wanna bring him into a quandary by asking him to write me a letter of rec for, well, himself. Nevertheless, this was my most recent and most important research experience, so I want a letter of rec from this experience. Prof 2 was my secondary advisor that established the connection to Prof 1 in the first place. So I came up with the idea to ask Prof 2 if he'd be willing to work on a joint letter of rec with Prof 1. What do you guys think about this idea? I know it's common for PhD student and a Prof to write a joint letter, but is it common for two Profs to write one together? Thanks in advance!
  5. Right, I should have specified. I am interested in social psych, where you can get away with lower GREs scores than in say, clinical. I know POI, have worked with him before and he has already expressed interest in working with me, which will probably work in my advantage. I have a 3.8 GPA in undergrad, and a 4.0 in my Masters.
  6. Since y'all helped to keep me sane while studying, I thought I'd share my scores to keep others sane as well. 149 Q / 148 V - Kaplan - before I started studying 153 Q / 153 V - Princeton - 10 days into studying 156 Q / 159 V - Princeton 157 Q / 158 V - PowerPrep I 164 Q / 157 V - Princeton - I believe the Quant score was an outlier 156 Q / 156 V - Princeton - two days before the real thing urghhhh 155 Q / 156 V - PowerPrep II - one day before the real thing urghhhhhh 158 Q / 159 V / 4.5 AWA - The real thing I am a non-native speaker, so I am ecstatic about the verbal and the analytical writing score. Quant could have been slightly higher, but since I plan to do a PhD in psychology, Quant seems slightly less important, and my scores are competitive for most PhD programs. I studied probably 15-20 days, for the majorities of these days, and I practiced a lot with practice tests and reviewing the mistakes I made. My impression was that overall, Princetons tests seem to fluctuate in terms of difficulty. Some people say they are easier, but I think that just some happen to be easier, others are slightly harder than the real thing.
  7. Finally received my official GRE scores: 159V (82 %) / 158Q (70%) / 4.5AWA (82%) Generally speaking, are these competitive scores for a PhD program?
  8. I though I'd start a new topic for all those who (like me) want to apply for a social psychology PhD program for the fall of 2017. I am an international applicant, broadly interested in self-regulation, especially of emotions. I would love to chat with people who are in the same situation as me. Looking forward to meeting y'all
  9. I will also be applying. I am a international student, I will be applying for Social Psych PhD programs. I have worked on two independent research projects, one conference presentation (small, unknown conference though) and have been an RA and TA in UG. My BS is in psychology, and I have a large number of research and stats classes. My Masters is social/health psych, with one semester being one of the independent research projects. - Undergrad GPA: 3.8, Masters GPA: 4.0 - GRE: 159V, 158Q, AW still waiting (fairly happy with them, although I would have liked Quant to be a little higher) I have worked with POI on one of the independent research projects (i.e. POI was my advisor), and I have expressed my interest to join the program where he works for next fall. Naturally, he could not promise anything, but he said he has enjoyed working with me and that it would be great to have me back. I am good friends with other grad students in the same program, which can't hurt I think. There are three more faculty members in the program that I could collaborate with. Everybody tells me that I should have pretty good chances of getting in. I have a question though, I would love to get a LoR from POI, because I think it has been my best work so far and he knows me very well. Would it be strange to ask him for one, even though he knows I am probably only applying to him?
