I don't think they've been sent yet. I am sure someone would have posted in the results survey. Last year, in the HGSE 2016 Thread, it looked like someone posted about their acceptance at like 8pm. So you never know!
-
Well, excited about the possibility of a positive outcome I guess. Lol. I'm still sad about the all-but-rejection from Vandy, but I'm choosing to be optimistic! That's the only way I'll get through this week.
-
It's officially mid to late this week... anybody else excited?
-
I can confirm from a reliable source that all interview weekend invites have been sent out for LPO. ?

Hey guys! I saw someone in the Sociology forum start a thread for interview advice and thought that would be a good idea to start here. This will be especially helpful as interview notifications start rolling in. For students that have attended campus interviews, participated in Skype interviews, or even just had phone call interviews, what did you do to prepare? What kinds of questions were you asked, and what kinds of questions did you ask? Any suggestions for hopeful applicants?

Fall 2017 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
Espeon replied to csot's topic in Sociology Forum
Have a great time! I did my undergrad degree in soc at Emory and fell in love. There are some incredible professors there, and Atlanta is a great city. Good luck! -
@day_manderly not the worst idea for a routine! I already tried it out and am liking it! Aaaaand then I went back to overanalyzing the survey results from previous years for my programs (which ones don't interview? Which ones do? Which ones typically notify by phone? By email? Which days of the week? Etc).
-
In the US we have Martin Luther King, Jr. day off. Schools are out and I imagine nothing will happen as far as notifications are concerned, but you never know! I read The Martian (it was good!) and Gone Girl, and I'm about to start reading Kindred. Right now I'm getting through Harry Potter, and since it's a re-read, it's not distracting me enough. Lol. In the UNC SOP, I put a POI's last name first and first name last. I didn't realize until I was on the phone with the program chair. Awkward. Lol. I didn't mention it, because I assume they read it, but I felt embarrassed. The interview went really well though. It wasn't a confirmed admit yet (the committee has to meet and vote and whatnot), but I feel really good about it! Not a bad way to start off the acceptance/rejection season at all.
-
Definitely not re-reading my SOPs unless I get an interview! I know I will obsess. Though if it helps, I got a professor's name backwards in my UNC Chapel Hill SOP and still got interviewed, so I don't think a typo will shut you out! Refreshing my email every 30 minutes, even though it's the Sunday of a three-day weekend. I need to read a book or something. Lol

This may interest folks also. I know I enjoyed taking a look and seeing professors with whom I could potentially work on the list! http://mobile.edweek.org/c.jsp?cid=25920011&item=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.edweek.org%2Fv1%2Fblogs%2F76%2F%3Fuuid%3D64457

It may be faculty preference. It looks like a lot of previous notifications in the results survey were emails, but I think 1too3for5's was a call. Basically, monitor everything, I guess. Lol
-
@jmaroon did you learn anything exciting at lunch today? I saw earlier in the thread you were having lunch today with your friend at Harvard and wanted to check in!
-
I sure hope you guys are right, @OutdoorsEd and @hopefulPhD2017! Here's hoping!
-
I suppose you're right! I thought it was weird to split notifications over a three day weekend, but I guess it is possible. I haven't seen the first result for TLD, so they may not have started the notification process yet. Still lots of hope left there!

I will say I'm reasonably confident that if we don't hear from LPO by today (and this probably goes for CRA as well since they seem to run on similar timelines) then it is doubtful we will be invited to the interview weekend. Admission isn't impossible (last year they admitted someone off the waitlist who didn't attend the weekend), but it's unlikely. I'm trying to mentally prepare myself...
-
Anybody else heard from LPO? No results on the survey and only @1too3for5 in the thread--surely more folks have heard?
-
I would look in the results survey and see if you can find last year's notification dates. That has somewhat helped to calm my nerves!
-
Congratulations, @1too3for5!! That's so exciting. If you don't mind sharing, was it a professor you mentioned in your statement of purpose that called, or was it the chair of the department? (Or someone else?) Did you find out any other details for those of us still waiting? Congrats again! Nashville is a wonderful city. Regardless of whether you go there, the weekend will be a blast.
-
My friend in LPO mentioned that they may call applicants over a two or three day period depending on the professors' timelines. I'm still checking my email/application status every hour though. Lol.
-
I didn't get that email or a call yet today. Feeling super anxious!
-
For which program?
-
I can definitely speak to @hopefulPhD2017's methods (I was doing the same calculations over breakfast haha). Nuances aside, with an entering class of 25 PhD students (per the HGSE website), we know for certain that 25 people are accepted--25/700=4%. We also know that 50 people are interviewed (50/700). That doesn't take into account the likelihood among a group, just random odds, but it's still a daunting number--it's much nicer to think that the odds would be more like you describe. ?
-
I saw on the survey results that someone applying to the PhD program for CRA has already been waitlisted! And if history is any indication, LPO applicants should know this week if they are invited to the interview weekend!

Fall 2017 Education Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections
Espeon replied to hopefulPhD2017's topic in Education Forums
@hopefulPhD2017 She did mention that the committee would be getting together to vote within the next two weeks and that I should hear something within that timeframe. So that was comforting!- 243 replies
