This might be a moot point since I'm still waiting for Boston College's financial aid info to come through, but Boston's cost of living is freaking me out a little. The studio apartments seem crazy expensive (from a CT standpoint) and having roommates only knocks it down about 200 bucks or so. Plus, I'm bringing a dog, so I don't even know if roommates would be feasible in that situation.

Boston Area MSW Fall 2017
alisham replied to HaleyWantstobeaTherapist's topic in Social Workers Forum
Thanks! Of course, this happened AFTER I sent in my deposit for UConn. What I'm really waiting for is the financial aid package for BC. That will really tell me whether or not I'm going there, so I'm still keeping my option for UConn open. Hopefully, you'll hear soon!- 132 replies

Boston Area MSW Fall 2017
alisham replied to HaleyWantstobeaTherapist's topic in Social Workers Forum
I'm in the same boat. I have 10 days to let UConn know my decision and send in my deposit, yet I'm still waiting for 3 schools to get back to me. At this point, I think I'm going to have to send in the deposit, just in case.- 132 replies

Complete application now Incomplete Help!
alisham replied to Catlover133's topic in Social Workers Forum
Well, the university website does state that they need the transcripts from all the colleges you attended. If community colleges were excluded, the website would've stated it (for example, one of the grad programs I applied to mentions that they don't need community college transcripts, just the institute you graduated from). I'm actually surprised CSU contacted you, to be honest. Most colleges state on their website that it is the applicant's responsibility to make sure that all required materials are in by the deadline. As for your dad's email being seen as a "red flag", it could be. Even though you didn't ask your father to do this, the admissions people don't know that. They might think that you told your dad to email them and you could come across as someone who's not independent or can't solve his or her own problems. -
Haha, University of South Carolina did the same thing to me. The subject line started with "We're delighted..." and then it said, "We're delighted you've applied to our program, etc." Got my hopes up for nothing.

clinical MSW - Am I taking the wrong route?
alisham replied to anxiouslywaiting17's topic in Social Workers Forum
I wouldn't put too much stock in what an online person said. It seems like it can be 1 of 2 things: either it's someone who's gotten a PhD in Psychology (or etc.) and is bitter because MSW's are doing therapy, too (though the PhD's do get paid more, so I don't know why they're bitter) or it's an MSW going through imposter syndrome and doesn't feel ready for therapy. You can't really do much about the first thing (bitter people will be bitter regardless), but if it's the second thing, like Amanda87 said, you can do certificates and additional coursework to make you feel ready for therapy. LCSW's are also required to do continuing education credits and a lot of the topics have to do with therapeutic techniques/trauma/anything else. No one can tell you what to do. But look at it this way: if you do end up going the PhD and the PsyD route and eventually figure out that therapy is not for you or you no longer want to do it, there are other things you can do. However, according to PhD's I know, you'll end up in research and/or teaching, but will be overqualified for other types of jobs. If you end up going the MSW route and decide that you don't like therapy, there are so many other things you can do that don't involve therapy. You aren't limited to therapy, research, and teaching with an MSW. -
It all varies greatly. Most websites do tend to say that you'll hear back within 4-6 weeks of applying, but that's not written in stone. For example, UConn's MSW website states that if you apply in December, you'll know by the end of January, but if you apply in January, you won't know until March. However, I applied to UConn around mid-January and got an acceptance about two weeks later. So, really, it's all up in the air.
-
Yeah, that's what I thought. Now that I received one acceptance, I keep thinking that the others should come shortly. So, now I'm checking my inbox even more than I was before. I'm actually surprised UConn let people from the MSW program know so soon. Looking through the forum, I was expecting to have to wait until late March like others in the previous years did. Hopefully you hear from them soon!

My anxiety is through the roof at this point. Nothing I've done so far has distracted me enough to not check my email 10 times an hour. Luckily, I just got a job offer to teach toddlers, so I'm hoping that will be a sufficient distraction from the admissions process for now.
-
Same. I would love to go to Boston College, but it would have to be an amazing financial aid package for it to be feasible for me. Once I get decisions from other schools, I'm going start visiting campuses. Maybe seeing the campuses in person will help me decide. I'm surprised Salem State hasn't sent out anything yet. I remember them having one of the earliest application deadlines. The least they could do is let their applicants know early to justify that deadline.
-
I've applied to four schools which all would be a great fit for me, so I have no backup schools since I'd be happy to attend any one of their programs. I got accepted into my in-state school, which is great, and will probably be the cheapest option (they actually offer need-based grants at a graduate level, but I won't know if I received one until after the acceptance deadline) unless I get a graduate assistantship at one of the other schools. I can't plan my move since they're all in different areas, so I've been keeping busy by applying to jobs that I won't mind leaving in August and surfing the grad life topics in this forum. I think I need to step away from my computer in order to be fully distracted. Plus, it's Friday, so the chances of hearing anything before Monday are slim.
-
Just want to reiterate that this waiting is giving me tremendous anxiety. UConn spoiled me with a less than two week wait for a decision and now I keep thinking the other schools I applied to will be just as fast.
-
That's great! I'm so relieved we didn't have to wait until March.
-
Just received my acceptance e-mail! I'm still waiting on 3 more schools, but seeing as how I'm in-state, unless they offer me tons of aid, I'll be going to UConn in the fall.
-
I just received my first acceptance e-mail! I was accepted into UConn!
-
Thanks for this! My application was marked complete a week after yours, so hopefully I'll hear in about two weeks.
-
Boston is so expensive! I've been looking at apartments and it's insane.
-
Yeah, I honestly think it'll take a while for them to get back. I know the website said we should know by the beginning of March, but I saw somewhere else that we should know by April. Something tells me that I'm going to have to put down a deposit for another school, just in case.
-
Ugh, this waiting is killing me and I've only been waiting for about a week and a half. I've applied to UConn, Boston College, Rhode Island College, and University of South Carolina.
-
Oh wow, thanks for this! I looked at U of SC's MSW program before, but for some reason, it didn't make my list of schools to apply to. Just looked it over and I'm considering applying. I'm not from the area, but with a GA, tuition could be doable.

Yes, choosing a concentration was tough for me as well. I kept going back and forth between Individuals, Groups, and Families and Community Organization. But everyone kept telling me that it would be easier to go from micro SW to macro as opposed to macro to micro and that it was tougher to find a job with macro. So, I ultimately decided on the former. I should be finished with my all of my apps by the end of the week. Good luck to you as well!
-
I'm applying for Individuals, Groups, and Families, which is what the Casework concentration is being changed to. How about you?
-
I am! I'm also in the process of writing my personal statement. Can't wait to get this whole process over with.
