  1. I think the most important and hardest part of preparing for interviews is to relax and be confident! At least it is for me (Hello, Imposter Syndrome, my old friend). Remember that you've made it this far and that's saying something. I'm blanking out on who sent the bioethics pdfs out, but they were really helpful. Also, take time to think about experiences that you can related to genetic counseling. Did you get the list of hotels from UAMS?
  2. Took it easy this weekend, just focusing on self-care and trying to finish my latest knitting project. My husband and I celebrated our 6 year anniversary with a nice dinner. Then today I did a pretty thorough apartment cleaning. Kept busy enough to not dwell on application/interview stuff!
  3. Depending on how my day goes on April 24th, I'm thinking about taking the teratology class. There is this really interesting app that uses technology similar to Facebook's facial recognition called face2gene. It uses pictures of an individual to suggest genetic abnormalities and conditions. I got to briefly see it in the fall and it looked really interesting.
  4. You have a certain amount of time to finish it from the time you enroll. There are lectures, which are much more helpful than the book, and three tests. The downside is you can't take it for credit if you aren't a grad student. But it's a great class!
  5. @DNA15DNA15 I also applied to UCI but haven't heard. I'm assuming that means I'm wait listed for an interview or rejected. Either way I'm preparing myself for rejection. I did the same with Utah and it kind of helped, kind of. No news is good news, but I'm letting myself down gently just in case. VCU gave us good information on the Unmatched Applicant program. Not sure if that makes me feel better that there may be another shot this year if I don't get in on Match Day, or if it stresses me out.
  6. Good luck on the one you're waiting on!
  7. I know in a lot of programs accepting and then later changing it to declining is not okay, you're expected to stand by whatever decision you make. And if you accept a spot it means someone else gets a rejection. It can have a chain reaction of people scrambling to reconsider things. Email the program you're waiting on and ask. The programs I've asked have been really nice. They know other schools have different timelines and you need to make a decision. You could also ask the program you've been accepted to for an extension.
  8. Thanks! Hopefully you'll hear from them soon!
  9. Looking at past results, it looks like it could be any day now! It feels like some of the programs are taking a lot longer this year, but this is my first time applying so that could just be stress. It feels like applications went in ages ago. Just got an interview offer from UPitt!!!!
  10. @Ellaie I used to live just down the road from the medical center. I'd love to be back in the area. My parents are about an hour and a half from there and my dad's going through some pretty serious health issues, so I would love to be close by.
  11. Nothing here yet either. I have a feeling I won't be getting an interview there.
  12. Saw someone got an interview invite with UCI!! Congrats! Excuse me while I go refresh my email...
  13. In a college physics lab one of the other students got annoyed that his group members asked him a question. He threw one of those nice, metal, mechanical pencils as hard as he could. I was maybe ten feet from the guy and caught it with my face. Faces bleed a lot. And now it permanently looks like I have make up smudged under my eye.
  14. The little swirly icon that shows up when my email is loading is painful at this point.
  15. Funny story- I got engaged shortly before starting at my current job. We were semi new to the state and knew no one. The week I started my job, my then-fiance left for Africa for six weeks. So I was the new girl who lived alone with her cat, had no friends, and was supposedly engaged to a man that conveniently lived on a different country. My coworkers weren't totally sure my fiance existed.
  16. Wear it! I ended up mentioning by husband in a few of my one-on-ones. Your fiance is no doubt a good source of support and will be important in your state of mind and self-care through grad school, career, and the rest of your life.
  17. Yeah, to kind of clarify my previous statement, I knew the reasons I wanted to apply to VCU before I visited, but having never been to the east coast (other than Disneyworld, if that even counts), I wasn't sure of all of my reasons until I got there. Have an idea of why you want to go there, but if you get there and something really stands out that makes you want to be there, go with it!
  18. I didn't really have a solid answer for why I wanted to go there until I visited! I know that's not much help. It helped that everything everyone was saying at dinner and right before interviews solidified that I wanted to go there. One of the second year students said that, when she interviewed, they sent everyone a paper ahead of time, then finished the day by discussing the papers. So glad they don't do that anymore!
  19. I did the "tell me about yourself" for each of them. They all asked about why I wanted to go to that program, and I ended up talking about life in Richmond with everyone as well, although that might be because it's such a far move for me. It felt like they really were focusing on if you're a good fit for the program and for the field in general, and making sure that you understand what is genetic counseling.
  20. The whole process was a lot less scary than I thought! Dinner the night before was super relaxed and the students were very open to questions. The program I interviewed with (VCU) had it set up to where you interview with 6 different faculty separately. It was definitely a long day for everyone, but it was nice. A lot of it was talking about yourself and your interests. I think each person asked me one situational or hypothetical question. We had students escorting us everywhere so we didn't get lost, and they were fantastic! Overall it was a really pleasant experience, just tiring. Make sure you bring water. CLothing wise, I wore a suit. I opted for pants since I didn't know how it would be weather wise. Everyone else who was interviewing was dressed about the same.
  21. Just heard from Utah and I didn't get an interview. It's a weird feeling because I resigned myself to not getting in when I was wait-listed for interviews, so I'm disappointed, but it's more that my disappointment is just confirmed. I emailed UPitt 2 weeks ago and they said they were hoping to send invites out that week, and I saw at least one. But I still haven't heard. How early is too early to ask them again?
  22. @AspiringGC that's awesome!! I'd really like to do that at some point. So if any of you are going to interviews with the option of dinner with everyone the night before, I highly recommend it! It really helped me relax and made the whole process less stressful!
  23. Had my first interview yesterday. It was a really long day but I felt pretty good about it! Everyone was very nice and welcoming. 2 months from today!
  24. I'm still waiting for Utah. I emailed last week and they said that if I hadn't gotten an interview or rejections I was on the waitlist. I also still don't know anything about Pittsburgh, other than they were hoping to get the invites out last week, which I saw someone got! The waiting is starting to make me feel like it just isn't going to happen. On the plus side, I go to VCU this week for my interview so at least I know it will be an exciting week!! I also feel like there is a good chance UCI may start sending stuff out this week.
