I haven't gotten any feedback yet, so this is all with a grain of salt. One of the things that came up multiple times at this past AEC was that education is really limited by the capacity for students in clinics. While the discussion was focused on clinical during Master's programs, I think the field as a whole is aware that there just aren't a ton of places that can accommodate students. Having some shadowing, even one day, is great! The NSGC website lets you see which counselors are ok with student contact. See if anyone is open to a phone interview. You're academic background is strong. (Glad my grades aren't being compared to yours!) If you're concerned I would suggest finding advocacy experiences. Working with individuals with disabilities, work suicide hotlines, volunteer with rape/domestic violence groups... Hope this helps!

How many times have you checked your spam box today?

Those little red diamonds will be the death of me. -
After reading another thread where someone mentioned it, I cleaned out my email box. I have no idea why, but that has made it a lot easier to not constantly check. My phone only updates the number of unread emails when I open the application.

The thing that frustrated me with the math on the GRE was that it seemed to be more needing to learn tricks to getting the right answer than it did learning the math. I used Kaplan and ended up yelling at my book more than a few times.

I'm finding things where I can't access my email. So I've been playing movies on my phone while doing housework, getting really in to cooking, and going for walks. I actually left my phone home while running errands accidentally and it was insanely peaceful.

Hopes: to be ok with whatever decisions are made by admissions. Dreams: Get into a program where my husband can get a good job with plenty of hiking options around. Go on to provide genetic counseling to populations currently lacking access, possibly as a public employee. Ride a dinosaur. Guesses: I'll gain 10 pounds from stress eating. Edit: sorry, didn't notice this was in the SLP category. Good luck, everyone! I work indirectly with a lot of SLPSs and we desperately need you!

I've started exploring my cookbooks more. I put a movie on on my phone so there is noise and I'm not tempted to stop what I'm doing/stop the movie and check. Today's culinary escapade: vegetarian pad Thai and tofu fudge popsicles.

Super awesome part of Stanislaus- I may actually qualify for in-store tuition, even though I haven't lived there for more than 3 years. Oh! I remembered that I wanted to share this with you! Genome Magazine offers free subscriptions and cover some pretty interesting topics. This is the second year in a row I've gotten it, so I can promise it's not a free-introductory type scam. http://genomemag.com/

I was checking my email multiple times an hour without thinking about spam. Saw this thread and now I have to check the spam box every time as well. Last night I got actual letters on how to set up an online account to monitor status for one application. So add old fashioned mail and that new sight to my email, spam, and this website to the list of things I check way too often. -
Came home to two envelopes from Stanislaus! One was confirming that I am not a California resident, the other was info to set up my student account so that I can see application status. Set up my password, went to log in- the server is down right now. But at least I'm one step closer to knowing if they have everything!

It's hard not to worry about deadlines, but I wouldn't be too worried about one day. That being said, I'm not familiar with Michigan at all. For some of the schools I was really stressed because it said that they had only received unofficial transcripts or hadn't received them at all. This was only true for one of the schools, the rest simply hadn't updated the tracking system.

Definitely agree on missing working on applications! By 11am I had checked my email 6 times. I even had an hour long meeting before then where I couldn't check. I know there's nothing there, but I can't help it!

I'm not in school but I work full time. Usually I'm happy as a clam to be at work, but now that applications are done I have no drive! Trying to keep up on everything that I need to do is not working out well without motivation.- 4 replies

Nothing yet. The results tab showed someone getting an interview with Emory, but looking at other schools I'm not really expecting to hear anything until around the 25th. That hasn't stopped me from constantly checking my email though. Only 97 days until Match Day! Not that anyone is counting.

I think it depends on which program. I want to study genetic counseling and all of the schools stress advocacy experience. My job is advocacy based and person centered, so my supervisor and her supervisor both wrote me letters. Then for the third letter, I asked a parent of one of the individuals with whom I've worked. I can pretty much guarantee no one at the places I've applied to have heard of these 3 people, but they could talk about my experiences, work, commitment, etc.

I work in a county run developmental disabilities program where we use IQ scores to help determine eligibility for services. I believe we predominantly use WASI, but we work with outside providers so it's technically up to them about which one to use.

At some point I read the series, but long enough ago to not remember much more than that I really enjoyed them. I'm excited that I'm at a point where i can read purely for enjoyment! Although most of the books on my nightstand are somewhat based in genetics. I am going to make a quick plug here for everyone to read Lean In. Not about genetics, but an excellent and eye opening read.

Reading a thread about imposter syndrome I can't escape the feeling I definitely don't fit in and someone is going to realize that soon. Yup, even in talking about how imposter syndrome sucks I feel like an imposter. My husband told me I was the definition of Dunning Krueger. My first thought was that he meant I don't realize just how dumb I am. My brain is a jerk. If it makes anyone feel better, I know a well respected scientist who had a long and productive career. His imposter syndrome still gets so bad he gets physically ill, even after he retired.

I can't wait for the next Orange is the New Black season! I was sobbing at the last episode. Series of Unfortunate Events looks really good, that may just be my day on Monday. Both of my in-laws are career geologists. It's a lot of fun going to different places and getting my own personal mini-lectures. Does he have a particular interest? And happy almost birthday!

@UltrapeachesUltrapeaches He got two bachelor degrees from Oregon State, Accounting and Business Information Systems. We're originally from California but are up north now. I keep hearing about Settlers of Catan, I think I need to try it! @slaybackcslaybackc Any Netflix favorites? I have a habit of going through older shows on there so I don't end up with a ton of variety. Have fun at the Grand Canyon! It's incredible.

I'm a services coordinator for people with developmental disabilities in Oregon. I'm a 27 year old Californian transplant who moved here so my hubby could finish school. In my off time I like to hike, kayak, knit, and play games. Sometimes I pretend I run, but I think you have to go more than once or twice a month to call yourself a runner. @ultrapeaches any particular board games?

Oh yeah, even in my free time I can't not worry about interviews! Are you able to focus on the exercise or does it turn in to you mumbling answers to a non-existent interviewer? (I totally don't do that. Nope. Not at all.)

Stanford emailed me earlier this week asking that the two outstanding letters be submitted by yesterday. I've been tracking and reminding, but I talked to those recommenders again and they said they'd get them in. Cue super fun moment of panic today when I got an email that neither had submitted their letter yet! Luckily Stanford is not as strict on deadlines as I am and both were submitted today. All of my letters and materials should now be in for all of the programs to which I've applied. Now I just don't know what to do with my new found free time.

I've recently applied and haven't heard back, so my input is all based on career camps I've attended. Having a 4.0 in your Master's is awesome! Every program or GC I've talked to says they can waive the GPA requirement if the rest of the application is very strong. They'll want to see good advocacy experience as well. If patient advocacy is part of your current job then you're doing well. None of the programs I asked had an issue with experience being paid.
