  1. I got an interview offer from UAMS! They had 2/23, 3/13, or 3/31, so I asked for 3/31. I'm excited to check out Arkansas!
  2. Last night my to-do list for Stanislaus went away, but it still said "incomplete." This morning it switched to pending! I think Irvine starts reviewing them this week. We're getting closer!
  3. Honestly, I think that speaks volumes to your character. I don't think it's a big deal that you haven't specifically worked at a pregnancy center. Stick to your guns and be able to back up your reasons without becoming political, as you've done here, and I think you'll be fine.
  4. No. I wanted to, but my husband is coming with and I didn't feel like it was right to ask a student to put him up too. We get in Wednesday around 5 and will be there until Saturday. Let me know if you want to meet up? Congrats to both of you, that's awesome!
  5. So I'm curious, have you all thought about what type of Genetic Counseling you'd like to do? I know it's likely to change throughout school and GCs often switch multiple times in their careers. I love working with people with developmental disabilities, so I'm thinking metabolic or neurogenetics would be right up my ally. I'm also really interested in the genetics of mental health, especially given the amount of people with companies DD and mental health diagnoses.
  6. When I'm stressed I like to cook and bake, or give massages. My sister bought me Thug Kitchen for Christmas and I love it! Made some delicious broccoli and chickpea burritos and pad Thai. But my latest fun baked good was a brownie pizza. Brownie crust, cream cheese frosting, and strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. The only downside was getting annoyed that the fruit wasn't perfectly symmetrical.
  7. I am!! Are you staying with a student? That would be awesome! My husband is joining me on the trio out since he's never been there either. I figure if we're moving across the country we should make sure it's a good fit for both of us. Congrats on the interview! What day did you get? The NSGC is hoping to get the bill regarding CMMS recognition introduced to the house in the first quarter of this year. That could be great and really interesting to follow.
  8. Are you staying with a student?
  9. I just got mine this morning via email. Don't despair! It seems like this is pretty early in the season and lots of places haven't started notifications yet.
  10. I asked for the 23rd. You?
  11. I have my shoes picked out because they're super cute and I literally walked 10 miles in them one day with zero issues. I'm thinking nice slacks, collard shirt, and a suit jacket? I'd rather be over dressed than under.
  12. Yes and no. I scheduled once back in 2011, and then I got to shadow for a day in May. Right now I work as a services coordinator for people with developmental disabilities. I ended up with a lot of the individuals who have a known genetic component to their disability. I've gotten to attend the NSGC's AEC twice, once through work. I think that experience was invaluable and I walked away feeling like I had a good understanding of the field. And everyone I talked to at the AECs and career camps have been encouraging and supportive, so not only is it a great career but a great community.
  13. Thanks! I got an email this morning with three dates, asking for my top two choices. For GREs, my verbal was 159, quantitative 153, and analytical writing was 5.0. My undergrad GPA was not strong at all, I graduated in 2012 with a 2.98.
  14. Currently typing this from Cloud 9 because I got an interview with Virginia Commonwealth!!
  15. Welp, got an email from a different program about the same recommender.
  16. Just got an email from UAMS and my heart just about jumped out of my chest. Sadly it was because one of my recommenders still has not submitted their letter.
  17. I've heard mixed things about GRE scores and how much they actually matter. Have you seen Twice Born? I got to go to a talk on fetal surgery that included one of the doctors there and it was incredible!!
  18. That's awesome and really important work! I hope you enjoy it. =)
  19. I applied to UC Irvine, Pittsburgh, Stanislaus, Stanford, Arkansas, Virginia Commonwealth, and Utah. I actually took Cincinnati's Embryology course online (sadly not for credit) and debated applying there because I felt it was such a good class. I'm in a state with no programs so I have to move anyway. Good luck!
  20. After stalking the old Results stuff I've convinced myself that this is likely the first possible week I could hear back. I know some people have gotten responses from one program I applied to, so now I'm even more neurotic about checking my email, mail, school sites, smoke signals, etc. Where all did you apply?
  21. Yeah. I wonder about whether in-state versus out-of-state tuition has any effect on admissions decisions, whether conscious or not. I can't really see it being a factor, but I am so curious about the admissions decisions that I'm currently over analyzing everything. My husband is currently deciding on an intern to hire for his job. I'm far more nitpicky about little things on resumes than he is now.
  22. I wonder if you'll get the whole affidavit thing too.
  23. Turns out schools aren't sending emails about interviews at 10:15pm (or 1:15am for some that I applied to). Not that I'm checking...
  24. If I make it to interviews, the programs I applied for all call all of the people they interviewed on the same day and tell them "yes," "no," or "waitlist," and then you have 48 hours to decide. Already decided I'm taking that day off of work and having an "oh crap" party. I figure it's either "oh crap, I didn't get in," or "oh crap, I'm gonna be a grad student!" If it's the "oh crap I didn't get in" I'm pretty sure I'll call out of work the next day, spend the day wallowing on the couch, and then the next day get up and figure out how to improve my applications. I have a job that I thoroughly enjoy and relates to what I want to do, I have a supportive husband, and a couple of sweet and cuddly kitties. If I don't get in, I'll try again.
  25. Congrats!! I haven't heard anything about a writing exercise. That makes me nervous. I know during interviews at my office (not GC related) they give interviewees a prompt or scenario then give them 20 minutes to write a response. No idea how to prepare for that. Today I am working on documentation at work. So in other words: write a case note, check my email, write a case note, check my email...
