I have a snacking problem, especially while studying. Have you tried getting low carb, high protein snacks? Less fatty nuts, hummus (with cucumbers, carrots and celery rather than pita), and fruit have helped me. Also tea. Tea was a lifesaver when caffeine was starting to wreck my whole system in ways that legitimately interfered with my work, plus it was a much healthier addiction than ginger ale/sugar-loaded lattes/juice/hard cider.
My primary concern with a juice fast would be its impact on stress and energy levels, which could make it more difficult to think critically, articulate ideas, complete tasks, or not snap at colleagues. Don't make school any more miserable than it has to be with extreme dieting.

Mini little vent. I went to see Beauty and the Beast today. For the most part, it was really good. But then there's a mention of the plague, and I was like huh? There was nothing else medieval about the scenery. From the music, fashion, scenery, etc. it looked like there was a lot of baroque influence and I'd say it was 18th century France. So the plague just seemed totally out of left field, and I spent a fair amount of time after sitting there confused, thinking "Wait. What time period iis this?" And I'm just going on a little rant here because that anachronism really irritated me and no one else I know really cares about stuff like that. Silly little vent, but there it is.

I avoided too much interrogation by mentioning papers by the professors.  Still, I've got a lot of researching and reviewing to do before starting.

Hey that's me! Thanks! I didn't bother posting because most of the art history folks seemed to be applying to bigger schools, but if anyone else here has applied or has gone there, hit me up.

-You start looking into alternatives because you're not sure if you can survive at your current job for another year.
-You make excuses to not commit to a cruise that your parents are offering to pay for in December because "that might be finals week".
-You have practice interviews in your head that are way better than the actual interviews you gave.
-You go hunting for Pokémon not necessarily because you're a nerd (even though you are) but because you can't go checkingbyoir email when you're catching a Chansey.
-You secretly make a voodoo doll for that friend of yours that got into the grad school of their dreams on their first try and tell you that they don't understand why you haven't gotten in yet.

If your remaining three chances don't work out, you could consider sending a personalized thank-you letter via snail mail with a Starbucks gift card. It might be a nice gesture anyway as they've already done it twice. Hopefully you won't need to apply next year, but if you do you could include an employer as a fourth LoR.

It's much easier to write letters after the first. A lot of faculty members keep copies of letters and just update them with subsequent submissions, and every letter I requested from professional references, said writer gave me a physical copy of the letter. If I need another letter from the latter, I'll send them a copy of the letter, reminding them of who I am, and I'd ask for an updated letter.
I wouldn't give up hope yet. It's still only February, even if late February.

Nope, just so happens that I follow both of these threads, having commented on them before, and have been receiving more updates than usual today  So I got curious as to what all the fuss was about. I did downvote one or two of your posts on the Best Rejections thread, because I thought you were being condescending. Your reaction on the results page was anonymous, so it isn't like you had to go around and find all these instances of it being mentioned and defend yourself. No one needed to know how the rejection affected you, specifically.
I don't know about any of the other posts or online debates you've been in, and I'm sincerely sorry if you feel like you're being targeted, because this forum has been a huge source of solace for me, but if you're the common denominator in all this negativity then that should maybe signal something?

Are you following me around the forum talking about this? Why do you care so much? If it's that person's dream school, great, I'm happy for them. I only speak for myself when I badmouth the school. Why should they care so much what I think? By the way... you assume that I'm just talking about the "Best Rejections..." thread, but in fact at least one of those users has been chiding me in other threads and downvoting all of my posts.
Maybe I should have pursued a career in writing instead if I'm this good at getting so many opinions raging and emotions boiling over a few sentences I typed. I'm flattered.

-You make ever-growing guilt-ridden lists of all the texts in your field you haven't read yet.
-You know precisely when the postal mail arrives going by your stomach aches.
-You've grown to hate Sundays because "there's no post on Sundays." (I have never related to Harry Potter more.)
-You suspect your recommenders of secretly hating you.
-You're already brainstorming thesis ideas at your muggle job, just as an escape.

Charlsa got a reaction from skydancer in Art Historians vs. Artists
I know at least in 18th c. Germany, Winckelmann was scolding artists to imitate the Greeks. I was told he was the father of art history, so I'm not certain what was the norm before then. The study of art would have been considered the philosophy and/or science of aesthetics around his time. So it would be less "this guy did it this way for this reason" and more "there is one true and pure beauty and here are some instances in which somebody or some culture came close." (f--king HEGEL) And then there were the times and places in which artists were considered more like craftsmen, so it would be a matter of picking up techniques or styles according to what your talents were and what the patrons desired. We know that Michelangelo, that cheeky devil, would imitate ancient Roman statues, but they were also in high demand. Maybe the secret is following the money to determine how and what artists (and art historians) study?
Depending on how far back you want to go, literacy levels, dissemination of reproductions, the ability to travel, and the wealth of the artist would also impact what they studied. It's easy to understand how artists would be considered craftsmen if training through workshops and apprenticeships was the majority of their education. If we're talking in the last 200 years or so, I'd say artists were deeply involved in considering, forming, rejecting and using theory just as art historians have been.
I know that I'm fond of looking at art in terms of historical events, and I came from a studio background. But after taking a historiography class for art history, I came to understand that theory is, unfortunately, nothing new in our field. It's pretty much founded on it thanks to German philosophers (those bastards---I might never forgive Kant and Hegel).
Sorry if this is a bit tangential. It's midnight and I'm super wired.

Another Mahler lover here! (I actually got to sing in his 8th Symphony once, that was incredible.)  Dvorak and Stravinsky are other classics - if you like opera, you should listen to Rusalka.  When I'm feeling anxious or angry, virtuoso violin concertos tend to be perfect! I'd really recommend the Ronda Capriccioso by Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky's violin concerto in D major. For another rebel who's less, hm, vigorously emotive, you should listen to Erik Satie. He's the one who composed the music for Parade!

I've heard literally nothing and it's starting to freak me out. No mail, no calls, no e-mails. The most I've gotten is emailed receipts for my submissions and South Carolina's Financial Aid office asking me to create an account so they can......? Yeah, if anyone could finish that sentence, I'd appreciate it, because I'm at a loss. The results from other schools are starting to pour in, but none from my schools.
Also I flip-flop literally every day as to whether my chances are decent or terrible. I stay occupied by reading too much mindless fiction. Just finished Ring by Koji Suzuki. Also I'm trying to get into classical music, if anyone has any recommendations. I want 19th and 20th century rebels.

See large envelope in the mail. Heart rate goes nuts, blood rushes to brain, hands start shaking. Oh thank god, this is it. At least one place has accepted me. Everything will be okay and I can rest easy. Nope, it's a sample packet from a publishing company that my mother requested. Dammit.
