I wanted to say something like this but I wasn't sure how to do so politely. I'm not sure this was quite right either. I've noticed a lot of young people, especially the typical college-aged person these days, has very little experience of rejection, so I don't think they are as well equipped to deal with it. The changes to the K12 environment, helicopter parenting, "everyone gets a trophy" attitudes, class-level entitlement, the general privilege of the average poster on these forums, etc. I think it's a lot more complicated than "get some perspective." But I don't have the solution either. The title of this thread is correct "rejection hurts," but some of us have a lot of life experience which lends perspective and the ability to manage emotions and others don't. I try to remember that this is the type of person I'm chatting with here on these forums, and that the differences between us aren't going to be rectified by posts over the internet.

One year a long time ago, there were penguins who didn't wear hats when swimming. This made their mothers livid. "Unacceptable!" Frightened, they screamed, "Bears!" Nobody seemed convinced so instead of going swimming they tried juggling. Their mothers tried everything they thought would teach her a skill. However, she couldn't even make oatmeal without disastrous results. So, the penguins gathered money (obviously) trying to purchase a bear. Towering over them, a grizzly beast danced, devouring all bears with such ferocity that even God enjoyed it. Afterwards, God congratulated the penguins and applauded them. "You did it!" Suddenly, the grizzly beast started dancing vigorously. There was an acromantula nearby. It challenged the preconception that magical mushrooms were magical. Sparkling, the magical mushrooms were spreading throughout town. Nobody with pyromania thought grilled cheese would spontaneously erupt into nine identical squirrels! Nevertheless, the penguins elucidated the benefits of sparkling water from Iceland. Suddenly, Iceland exclaimed, "Enough!!! No more penguins. Kill all of the arcades on Monday because King Arthur suffered from sphenisciphobia." Tragically, everyone forgot lasers cure bug madness, meaning none of them stripped the violet beast of his powerful jaw bones. So while some arms spouted Kool-aid, others chopped nuts. This phenomenon halted commerce. Together twenty-five yellow dragons danced sporadically inebriating all anger gods, while academics drank champagne profusely. Who were they? Snotty undergrads eating free Tetrahydrocannabinol Chlorate. Homicidal kittens emerged from congressional hearings purring rhythmic improvised melodies, infuriating the associate professors who stripped them intermittently of all credentials. The incredulous kittens meowed like dragons farts. Except Bruno, who mewed like tinkling bells. Understandably, one chicken farted. Then, surreptitiously, two giraffes killed the conspicuous dragon. Audaciously, someone belched "RAWR!" Startled, four punks flew down from the Appalachian, a bit wide-eyed, and jumped into a brobdingnagian beam of protons, flipping fingers zestfully. Meanwhile, the paladins prophylactically committed themselves to diabolical plots.

"Hello, this is Pamela, how are you doing today" "Uh... hello?" "Recently you or a family member participated in a promotional event-" "Oh F#$%@ $%@$& @#$&." (just kidding, I'm pretty nice to those people, but that was what my brain was thinking)

The last time I applied, I applied to ten programs where I had identified 2+ professors at each institution that would be a good fit, and were doing work specifically in my field. I was a shut-out, that's what they called it at the time. I was in a unique position to be specially qualified to do work in that area, so I was beyond depressed about it. I got physically sick for a few months and was really mopey. I didn't think I would apply again, but here I am, a few years later, trying again. I have no hopeful responses yet. I don't know if I'll get it, but I know I won't be as bummed out this time as I was last time, because I'm not shooting as high and my expectations have already been shattered. I'm starting to accept that maybe this isn't for me and that some of the minimum wage jobs I've had in my life were more intellectually challenging than a lot of my classes anyways, so maybe I would be more satisfied just going back to work. There's a lot of important things to think about, but hopelessness is one of those lame emotions that I try not to let eat me up. Of course, if you need to do it for a while, that can be therapeutic too. I always made sure I had backups so that I would never be too miserable no matter what happened. But I know a lot of people don't do that.

Any Older (30+) applicants out there

@DBear From what I've talked with other professors about, being this old is a two-edged sword. 1) On the plus side; They love people who are mature, know who they are, can communicate properly, aren't stupid, and aren't Millennials, there's no other way to say that nicely. 2) Also; We tend to be here for better reasons, which means we will put in more effort and give up on ourselves less easily because we have more realistic goals. 3) On the other hand; They want young people who they can mold and develop into future tenure-track professors - who will stay on in their position for a LONG time - older people don't have as much time for all that, so we don't offer as much in that respect, we don't offer as much future time in a career, and in that respect, even if they only think it subconsciously, we aren't perceived as a good prospect. 4) Another negative; Older people are often perceived as less-likely to drink any koolaid - to put it more nicely, we are less likely to be "properly" indoctrinated into a discipline without fighting with our ideals and opinions. Basically the same reason the military won't take a fresh person in past a certain age, even for desk work. -
Is it a bad sign that I got my rejection letter this early?

Would it be better if you had gotten it later? You confuse me. I would love to have had my rejections two months ago so I wouldn't be thinking about it anymore. -

I do not think that accepting an offer of that nature stigmatizes you for later PhD programs. Johns Hopkins is a very well respected institution here. I agree with everything CoffeeFueledAnxiety said above. No one can tell later what offer you were given. Also, their funding might be reserved for residents of the US. I agree with the suggestion that you could transition to a PhD later. I know a lot of programs allow that. And yeah, like they said, wait until you hear from all the offers. Honestly an offer into the masters at that school is still a good offer just because of their reputation. If you get a Masters there it will still look very good for you, Johns Hopkins has a good reputation.

hmm. I feel like I just answered a question like this in the last couple of days. Everyone is freaking out. Let's just all admit it. We're freaking out. We want information. This wouldn't happen if the schools all agreed to notify everyone at the same time. That way the entire nation/world would get their acceptances/rejections at the same time. No freaking out. Sadly, that would require a level of coordination our professors do not possess.
