Not a R/C person, but CMU has capped the Lit program to 3 PhDs this year (and it sounded to me like they've been doing that for a while) - I'd guess that they've done that with the R/C PhDs? Apologies if I'm totally off on that, lol.

a_sort_of_fractious_angel reacted to renea in RANT: In terms of applications, what we wish schools did better.
UGH YES THE PORTALS.
And the complication for LORs on portals. I had two schools that required me to submit *and pay* the application fee before it would send instructions to LOR. Which meant I had to send my application in a week or two early or else I risked having late letters.
Some schools even have the graduate application portal and then some other department specific application that asks basically the same questions.

Any time I'm out with friends and they use the selfie-function on their phones to check their makeup/hair/teeth, I make a faux pithy comment about their inability to develop past the Mirror Stage. No one ever laughs but me, but I laugh every time.

Hi! Thanks! It was me - so the letter was dated the day I messaged y'all about my portal panic. It's from the grad school - no details on anything. I'm guessing I'll be emailed next by the dept and I'm gonna bet it won't be today/this weekend.

And congrats to all the OSUs, and Purdue, and Minnesota, and Oregon, and the Carnegie Mellon MA and Rhet/Comp PhD! If I missed anyone, I'm sorry - y'all are just too damn successful and it's all happening so fast!
Also, CMU people - maybe be frands?
And thanks, @Warelin!

Wherever Willy is, I hope he hears this. But seriously - it's underrated and I'm glad I've a friend in (book) arms. Also, As I Lay Dying? A fan? I read it in undergrad - mostly a blur now, but I do recall "my mother is a fish." Quality line.

My boyfriend (a very non academic) will listen to me talk/rant about basically anything (bless him). He was talking to his friend the other day and said something along the lines of, “She’ll just say the weirdest words that have absolutely no meaning to me.” His friend asked for an example and the first word my BF thought of was “pedagogy” which was just REALLY funny to me and then they argued about how to say it, which was even funnier to me.
Not really the same but whenever I tell someone I’m an English major (especially when I was still dating etc) I’d REALLY hate the whole “oh so you’re a grammar nazi,” because 1) no not at all, 2) comparing a grammarian to a nazi is absolutely uncalled for. I did teach a guy on tinder what “grammarian” was though, so not a total loss there.

Yes!! I’m loving all the Faulkner love. This is fantastic. Definitely a good distraction from the panic of waiting!

I imagine the following scene taking place in telemarketer board rooms across the country:
[Jenkins] [Holding hot cup of coffee] "Well, Jones, it seems that February is just around the corner. You know what that means..."
[Jones] "What's that, sir?"
[Jenkins] "Don't you know? Those sorry bastards applying to grad school are itching for updates on the statuses of their applications!"
[Jones] [Takes nervous sip of coffee and readjusts tie] "...and?"
[Jenkins] "They'll be glued to their phones, fool!"
[Jones] [Furrows brow in a gesture of deep contemplation; after a few moments, claps hands and jumps from his seat] "So, for once, they'll answer our calls!"
[Jenkins] [With a sinister grin] "They'll have no choice!"
[Jones] "We could even call them under the area codes of the most common schools!"
[Jenkins] [Grins broadly] "Genius! With that kind of thinking, you'll make junior-assistant associate before you know it!"
[Both take inaudible sips of their coffees]

I have yet to read Absalom, Absalom!, but it has been on my to read list for forever. My first conference presentation that was not at my school was on The Sound in the Fury so William Faulkner is near and dear to me.
Light in August is a high quality novel, my dude.

HI! Awkwardly smooshing into this conversation to say Light in August is especially fantastic. I'm not a Faulkner scholar outright but I looked at LIA in my BA thesis and one of my MA projects draws on A!A! (I do hemispheric/transnational American stuff) and I got really excited to see that you, too, love Willy Faulks!

Yes! I read Absalom, Absalom! last year and I have been fascinated by in ever since. I haven't read any of his other novels though, just short stories, so those are definitely on the docket for the near future.
