  1. Congrats on getting into your #1! I just submitted my NYU application. Did you ever log back in after you submitted to check for updates? I'm curious as to what that looks like.
  2. Ah I see. The two year program might be a great fit for you then! It's crazy that it took them six weeks to process your application. I know that is what they advertise, but I saw a member on here apply for the program on 11/06 and get in on 11/09. It gave me some hope about a quick answer - I am submitting my application today! My background in social work has been with behavioral health, but I'm interested in macro and international work. I know NYU is a clinical program but I think clinical experience is essential to being an effective macro worker. Congrats on your admission! Are you accepting your offer? Did they offer a scholarship?
  3. Hmm. That's interesting you got accepted into a different program than you applied to. Never heard of that happening before. Maybe it was an error on their end? When did you apply to NYU and when did you heard back? I am getting ready to submit for Advanced Standing next week and am hoping to hear back quick!
  4. Hey! I'm also trying to move to the NYC area. Congrats on getting your applications in. I'm applying to Columbia and NYU for starters as they are my top two. If that doesn't work out I will apply to Fordham and CUNY in the spring. Be sure to post updates on your acceptances!
  5. I am really hoping to go to Columbia. I have an interest in macro/policy/community development work and Columbia really caters to that. I love the way you can customize your experience there. I was born and raised in Arizona and am hoping to move to NYC so I'm really only applying to Columbia and NYU at the moment. I feel pretty good about my changes getting into at least one of those. If that falls through, I'll apply to Fordham and Hunter College in the Spring as they have later deadlines.
  6. Sounds like a pretty strong application! That is good to know about the fee waiver. I wouldn't have thought to do that. I have one of my letters in and am still waiting on two. I believe I gave them a deadline a few days prior to the December 1st Columbia deadline just to play it safe. As far as the NYU application goes, I think 3b on the Columbia admissions essay and the case example required by NYU are pretty similar. It'll probably take me some time to rework the essay I wrote for Columbia to cater to the NYU questions. It's nice that the questions are mostly the same. I just need to cut and add a little content. As far as my stats go: I have 3.75 cumulative GPA. Not exactly sure what my major GPA is but I think its about the same. I spent a lot of time on my SOP and have had it revised multiple times. Feeling good about that. Letters of Reference are coming from my field advisor, field instructor, and my current boss (Clinical inpatient behavioral health manager). I graduated in 2016 but was fortunate to get some experience dating back to 2014. I have 2.5 years experience as an outreach worker and case manager at a nonprofit servicing individuals experiencing homelessness and severe mental illness. I currently work as a behavioral health tech on the inpatient adult psychiatric unit at the regional hospital in my town. I have a few committees and community projects I worked on as well during my nonprofit days. What is your school of choice?
  7. Hey everyone! I am applying to Columbia and NYU for Advanced Standing Fall 2018. Congrats on your NYU acceptance! What a fast response! Makes me want to hurry up and get my application in. I've been spending the bulk of my time on my Columbia application. Would you mind sharing your stats?
  8. Hey everyone! I see this thread hasn't seen much activity in a while but I am also applying for MSW programs for Fall 2018. I am applying to NYC area schools with the hopes of relocating there from Arizona. Columbia is my top choice followed by NYU. I graduated with my BSW in 2016 with a 3.75 GPA. I've had two and a half years experience with case management at a non-profit servicing individuals suffering from homelessness, serious mental illness, and substance abuse. My time in that job helped get me on various other planning committees and projects around town. I also have some various volunteer experiencing through my undergrad studies. I currently work at an inpatient psychiatric unit as a behavioral health tech and have been doing this for about ten months. Still working through my application materials but I am eager to get it all submitted and see what the future holds!
  9. *** I totally misread your post and thought this was about Columbia for some reason. I can't figure out how to delete this post now haha! Oh well. If you're also applying to Columbia, I started a thread a few weeks ago! *** Hey there! I'm also applying for Columbia Fall 2018. I plan on submitting it before the priority deadline. Just curious - when you say you applied on the application deadline do you mean the first one or final one? I'm going for Advanced Standing. I have my BSW and graduated with a 3.75 GPA. I worked for two and a half years with a non-profit filling a variety of roles. Mostly focusing on case management and outreach with people experiencing homelessness, serious mental illness and substance abuse. Sat on a variety of planning committees during that time and did some other projects as well. Now I work at an inpatient psychiatric unit at the hospital in town and have been doing that for about 10 months. Good luck on your application!
  10. Hello Columbia hopefuls! As I was researching information about Columbia's MSW program several months ago, I came across a tread on this site for applicants for Columbia's Fall 2017 cohort. Applicants used the forum to offer encouragement and guidance through the application process, as well as provide updates about acceptance, financial aid, stats, and other things. It looked like it was tremendously helpful for them to have a community alongside them in the process (especially in the dreadful wait to hear back about acceptance). So I wanted to create an open thread for those applying to Columbia's Fall 2018 MSW cohort. Use this thread for questions about the application, updates about acceptance, and anything else related to the application season for Columbia Fall 2018. I look forward to hearing from others who are hopeful to attend Columbia for their graduate school and hope to see some of you in the fall!
  11. It's nice to see others who are already thinking about Fall 2018 and preparing now! That is where I'm at currently and most of the threads I found on here were about Fall 2017 decisions and such. I look forward to bouncing ideas and feedback off the others on this site and submit a strong application this fall.
  12. Hey everyone! I've been scrolling through various forums on here for a couple weeks now, but this is my first post! I graduated a year ago from Northern Arizona University with my BSW and a minor in sociology. Attending grad school has been on my mind a lot over the past few months and I've finally decided to pursue an MSW in New York City through an advanced standing program in Fall 2018. I intend to apply to Columbia, NYU, Fordham, and Hunter with Columbia being with current top choice. I'm flying to New York in August to attend prospective student events and see the various campuses. Needless to say, I'm staring to get very excited about the idea of starting my masters in NYC. So here is my question: does applying right when the application opens versus right before the priority deadline make much of a difference in terms of wait time for a decision? I've read lots of different forums on here about people applying at different times and it seems that most decisions come back in February or March. I presume that most applications open in the Fall (I got an email saying Columbia's opens in August) and I'm getting eager to get to work on my applications. I welcome any feedback about this question and the application process for these schools in general. Thanks!
