  1. I wondered that for a second. But I highly doubt that is the case. They probably send it to every applicant. If decisions aren't to be made for 2-4 more weeks, how would they know? And if they did know who they were going to accept, why would they withhold those decisions for 2-4 more weeks? haha.
  2. Dang! I was accepted to NYU in early December with a pretty good scholarship. I asked for an extension about a week later and they said wait until closer to the deadline, so I did. They granted me an extension till February 2nd but basically put the pressure on me to let them know my answer as soon as possible. Definitely got a different tone from admission than it seems others got!
  3. I've heard decisions should start coming around February 1st.
  4. Nice. I've heard Hunter does things pretty late - like interviews in April/May. It actually deterred me from applying as my top choice is Columbia. I anticipate hearing back from them in February and figure I have a better shot with them anyway! Good luck with the rest of your applications! I definitely had to hound my recommenders to get the materials in. NYU responded very quickly to my application. I was accepted the same week that I got an email confirming all my materials were in.
  5. Oh bummer! Have you heard back on any of your other applications?
  6. The admissions office says they will start sending out decisions around February 1st. Last year they came early - beginning around mid-January!
  7. Have any Columbia applicants received an email saying their application was complete? All my materials are in and were submitted before the deadline but I never saw an email about completion like I did from NYU. I'm thinking about email the office!
  8. I was accepted last week into NYU's Master of Social Work program (Advanced Standing). I submitted an application to Columbia's MSW program also and anticipate hearing back in February.
  9. Also I totally thought I posted this in here earlier but I guess no! A bit delayed, but I was accepted to NYU's Advanced Standing MSW program for Fall 2018 with a $17,000 scholarship. I was notified about the scholarship in my acceptance letter. I'm still waiting to see what Columbia says before I make a final decision. Good luck to other NYU applicants! I heard back four days after receiving an email from admissions saying my application was officially complete.
  10. I've seen a fair amount of people talk about getting accepted to MSW programs with a fairly low GPA. I think the key is highlighting the reason you had a low GPA and how you've changed and grown, or will change. It sounds like you have some good professional experience to go off of. Something that will help your application is looking at the mission statement of each school, getting a feel for the emphasis and values of each program, and tying it into your statement of purpose. Obviously most social work programs will have very similar focuses (NASW core values) but the programs I applied to talked about some different things in their mission statements. Use that to your advantage and show how you will be a good addition to their program culture! I know CUNY Hunter is very competitive but Fordham and NYU have fairly high acceptance rates from what I've found. I was recently accepted to NYU. Good luck and keep us updated!
  11. Hey there! That's interesting. My field placement was pass/fail. I guess I assumed all were like that. I obviously can't speak for admissions committees but I wouldn't let that deter you from applying to Advanced Standing programs. I think most (if not all) Advanced Standing programs require A's or B's in all your core social work classes, so if you meet that requirement I wouldn't be so concerned!
  12. I was just accepted into NYU for Advanced Standing MSW for Fall 2018 with a $17,000 scholarship! This is my #2 school so I am pumped!! They want an answer in four weeks but I won’t hear from Columbia by then. Has anyone had any luck with getting an extension?
  13. My professional background has been with mental health. I spent two years in a nonprofit doing outreach and case management for individuals experiencing homelessness and severe mental illness/substance abuse. This past year I transitioned to an inpatient adult psychiatric unit as a behavioral health tech. I've become more interested in macro social work - public policy, programming, community development, advocacy - maybe on an international level? That is why I'm most interested in Columbia's MSW program. I'm from Arizona but hoping to transition out to NYC. I live a small mountain town but want to be in a bigger city with more diversity and more opportunities for growth and connections.
  14. You should call the admissions office on Monday. I applied for Advanced Standing and had an X next to something called "Practice Example" but that is just questions three of the admissions essay. They girl I talked to said they've been having some weird glitches in their system. She resolved it when I called.
  15. Great, thanks for the feedback. I hope it all gets processed soon and I hear something! Did you officially accept your offer to Pitt?
  16. Hey there! I applied for Columbia's advanced standing program this week as well, among other NYC programs. I graduated with my BSW in 2016 and have three years of professional experience in mental health with homelessness as well as inpatient, and a few other committees and projects I've been apart of. I graduated with a 3.75GPA. I looked into the forums from last year and it looked like a lot of people were getting a pretty standard 10k scholarship. At least if I remember correctly. I also contracted my essay into one large essay but I did not include a title page or a works cited. I saw that they said to reference the relevant literature in one of the questions but I didn't really know what I would cite. Maybe the definitions of perspectives and theoretical frameworks? I'd be curious to know what you cited. I am anxious about getting in as Columbia is my #1 choice but I know I won't hear back until late January into February. So it hasn't been weighing on me too much! I know it will as the acceptance period gets closer! Did you apply to other schools?
  17. Did you get an email from NYU when your application was complete or under review? I submitted my app on 11/21 and my last reference letter was added to my application on 11/27. I haven't heard anything yet about my application being complete.
  18. Correct. Priority just means priority consideration for admission and financial aid - mostly financial aid is my guess. I just submitted my application this week. Good luck! What are you stats?
  19. I know right? Columbia is my top choice but I think I'll feel a lot better if I at least make it into one of my programs lol. NYU is #2 so I'd be happy either way!
  20. Congrats! I submitted my application for NYU last week but my last reference didn't submit their letter until today. She emailed it in because of some weird error in the portal. So hopefully my application gets completed this week! I just submitted my Columbia application today. I've been following their process and I wouldn't expect any answer until mid-January at the earliest. Unfortunately they don't do rolling applications.
  21. Columbia is my #1! I’m only applying to NYC schools though. Still waiting on my last letter of rec to submit and I’m getting anxious cause the deadline is coming up!
  22. Congrats! What were your stats? (GPA, experience, etc.)
  23. Thats not a bad scholarship! I'm about ready to submit my application to Columbia also. These are my top two schools. If neither pans out to me I'll apply to some back ups in the spring.
  24. Good to know. I'll have to check in with the office after the holiday. Hopefully that letter goes in alright.
  25. Right on. Mine is acting all weird. I'm an Advanced Standing applicant but I did my field placement in a spring block. For whatever reason, I would only let me upload two recommendations inside the portal. So I had to exclude one to submit it. I called admissions to see how to get the third one submitted and they said to just have them email in their letter directly. Now I'm getting emails saying stuff is missing on my application and to check out that status page to see what I need to do, but it doesn't say anything is missing! My recommender should hopefully submit her letter tomorrow. I just hope all this confusion doesn't hold up my application.
