  1. Did anyone else apply to Arcadia with personal recs that weren't from a GC?
  2. OOh I didn't know Utah had a date to send invites by! So exciting! Thanks for the info.
  3. Woo! Just hit submit on my final application! Funny, when I started the app process, I thought I'd feel so relieved once I finished them. Now I'm more nervous than ever! Come on March!
  4. I am Genetics and I got three verbal sections. Interesting. I think our numbers are probably not enough to assume this is how they do it, but three Quant sections would be much more stressful in my opinion. I was soo glad to see that third verbal pop up lol.
  5. Well, I too am here! I applied to nine schools, and my program uses the match, which means I don't find out until April 27th. Most of my schools send for interviews late Feb. So I have a whole two months to patiently wait for invites. We're currently training my replacement at my lab, and I'm unclear if I get to stay if I don't get it in. Puts a bit of pressure on the situation. I just hope I get in and can afford to relocate! In the meantime, I started a new part time job and I joined a gym. My "resolution" was to tidy up my house and organize a bit better, so we'll see how much I can throw away to hopefully prepare for a move! Then if I don't get in, at least I'll have a clutter-free house Stay positive everyone! We will get this done when the time is right!
  6. I'd say before taking it, take a solid three months to go through some test prep materials, and take a practice test BEFORE you start reviewing. Then after each month, take another. The practice exams on the ETS site are exactly like the structure on test day, and the scores were very similar, so it's a good indication of how you'll do. Then take your first exam, and repeat if you have to. I wouldn't just do it quickly to get a trial run over with, although that would be very handy to prepare. Mostly because it is expensive. There was an app on my phone that was free... Ready 4 GRE? Whenever I had a few minutes I would go through those quizzes and they were surprisingly similar to the actual questions on the exam. They also had video instructions and nice features. Also, Khan Academy has math prep videos, but I felt even though I was unfamiliar with the material, it went too slow, and you'd have to have a million hours of free time to go through them. I'd stick with topics that you know you need extra work on, instead of starting from the beginning like I attempted to do. Anywho, good luck! It isn't as bad as your anxiety makes you think it is beforehand! If you practice, you'll rock it!
  7. Just to follow up, they have already emailed me saying the application was approved and sent to the program, so it def didn't take 4 weeks. Just in case anyone is still waiting on submitting to them, I think you still have time
  8. Great advice! I've heard my program works together to plan alternating dates to avoid such things. Wish every school/program did this! My first interview offer was over the phone and I was so excited and caught off guard I accepted the first date without even thinking about when it was. Next time, I will stop and consider if it works!
  9. Really great points here everyone, thanks for the suggestions. I'll def be using these! First interview is in Feb!
  10. With interviews coming up, I wanted to know what are some good questions to ask my interviewers to seem interested and prepared. Obviously being engaged and asking typical program questions are a given, but do you have some conversation starters/questions to bring up during the interview that I haven't thought of? Thank you, Awkward Interviewer.
  11. It is going to be freezing here! It is very safe, so even if you don't have a buddy, walking around campus by yoursef during the day is totally doable. Iowa City is somewhat small, if you get a chance to look around downtown Des Moines, do it. It's got some nice food, shopping, and art spots... and isn't too far from the DSM International airport. Enjoy!
  12. I appied to Johns Hopkins and Maryland, but that's it for East/Southern areas. I wanted to apply for the NYC areas but I don't think I could afford rent as I can't live on campus with children and dogs!
  13. Howdy all. I am in my thirties and applying in a field that is mostly younger applicants (genetic counseling). I was worried at first if the mention of my daughter in my essay or at interviews would hurt my chances of getting in, but I realize it is a part of my whole being, so I couldn't leave it out. I've decided to instead hope that programs will see work and life experience as valuable and worthwhile and not as distractions. So many of you have meaningful journeys, even out of your field of interest, that can help shape you in your future path. Good luck to all!
  14. So will the match take away our ability to rank a school, if the school decides not to rank us at all? Or will we rank all schools we interviewed at?
  15. So I just submitted my app for John Hop through SOPHAS, and it sent me an email back saying that the application isn't complete until their system verifies all the transcript information (which if you've applied then you know you have to type every class in, even though we submit our transcripts to them), and this verification could take up to four weeks?! It says it should have been submitted at least four weeks before your deadline. Soooo, I'm just figuring this out now? Should I be worried? Has everyone else submitted theirs already? If you haven't, I'd recommend doing so now! I only waited because the app fee is $135 and ya know, Christmas!
  16. Guys, help me out. I'm totally freaking out about the GRE. I've studied but I still feel unprepared. I dropped out of high school when I was younger, so I literally skipped high school math. When I went into undergrad, I took exams that got me into upper math classes and I went from there. But those easy formulas with lines and geometry I'm having a hard time remembering b/c I just didn't use them. Anyway, now that I've ranted... I'm just curious if your if experience with the GRE (if you've taken it) was good or bad, and if the practice tests were pretty close to the actual exam? Did you have to retake it? Any advice? Thanks!
  17. Hey thanks this is an awesome alternative to a plain list. Love the visual!
  18. Hello! So I am applying this round with the rest of you and I have a few questions! Do any of you have advocacy exp that doesn't involve CRISIS hotlines or planned parenthood? Does anybody have a list of schools that offer some type of stipend or assistantship, either research or teaching? Do you know if its $100 PER school for the match fee, or a one time fee? (That's an extra grand for me ) What dates to interviews normally happen? Do you apply to each school through the match, or through the schools themselves. Thanks everyone!!!
