    So I had an idea I wanted to pass along to this thread. Considering how dense the network of sociologists is, I figure it could be cool to start a GroupMe (It's a free group texting app) for gradcafers who are interested. Even if we all end up going to different schools and have different research interests, there is a high probability that we'll be at similar functions, conferences, and meetings down the road. This would give us a space on our phones to: (1) Casually chat in real-time (2) Share information on upcoming conferences, meetings, social gatherings, etc. (3) Share our final application decisions (4) Ask each other questions and help out each other out when we're in need (5) etc. Obviously this is just an idea I wanted to pass along, but if people are interested I could start it up. All you would need to do is download GroupMe and then DM me your phone number so I can add you to the group.

    Anyone considering going to Northeastern this fall 2018? I got invited to the Sociology PhD and am leaning towards it. Boston is a great city and im pretty stoked.

    Thanks for that info -- really hoping to hear this week haha. I'm not sure exactly when she heard but I think last week. Considering no one on gradcafe has heard from BU, im hoping they made an early decision for her because she's international and will release regular decisions together.

    I called them yesterday -- they said they'd have decisions out in like 2-3 weeks. But I already have a friend who received an acceptance so I'm confused. Though shes an international student.

    Hi does anyone have any experience negotiating acceptance offers? I just got an offer with tuition remission, stipend, and health insurance and was told there was a second pot of money availiable for making counter-offers. Are offers from other schools the only other leverage you can use? I'm wondering if I could use relocation costs, or my current salary (which is higher than the offer). Any help or insight is much appreciated!

    Called into Boston University today, was told that the committee was deliberating and still needed at least 3 weeks.

    @Want_PHD @cam_soc hey guys im sorry the open house finished last night and I had to go straight to New York to CUNY's open house -- havent had a chance to post. Once I get home I promise ill provide a detailed post about my experience with NE.

    Hey I really appreciate the thoughtful response. You're absolutely right, although I haven't been accepted yet I think I should focus on the atmosphere and culture of the department as well as the surrounding city -- considering i'd be spending the next 6 years there. I have already done research on faculty and such while I was initially applying and I think at this point I need to focus on how this department can benefit me as a student and how it could bolster my research. I love that idea of seeing this visit as an opportunity for the department to sell themselves to me. Thanks again!

    Hi folks, Does anyone have any good tips or advice for how to make the most out of an open house weekend and potential interviews with faculty and grad students? I currently have different files on the faculty im supposed to meet, with their main research, publications, and interests. I plan on famiarlizing myself with all of them and preparing some questions. Any help or advice would be much appreciated! Im currently heading up to boston for northeastern's sociology phd open house. Thanks in advance

    Im not sure, you might not be on their short list but also I dont know if theyre doing a waitlist this year. Im heading to the open house now and will post more information once i find out.
