Two books I've read in the last year that I would recommend to anyone who likes contemporary lit with a healthy sprinkling of social commentary: The Power by Naomi Alderman (women develop the power to kill men with a single touch) and The Sellout by Paul Beatty (dude reinstates segregation). The Sellout is extremely hilarious, and I'm probably going to go reread it right now, actually.

Honestly so glad I'm living abroad this year so I don't have to worry about phone calls. It's bad enough getting worked up over every new email. -

Tha program sounds really cool! I've been pondering which I'd prefer, WGSS or English, and it's tough. Interesting to hear what other multi-disciplinary folks think. The wait is real. Good luck with the rest of your programs!- 41 replies

This is my understanding as well, and I'm so glad you agree. I'm waiting on Wisconsin for rhet/comp and I just had a mini heart attack reading that. @Wooshkuh FWIW I'm expecting to hear from Wisconsin in the next week or so, based on previous years' results.

Congrats on your acceptance to IUB, @indigopierogy!! I've heard back from all the Gender Studies programs I applied to. Waiting to hear about my English programs now, and you're right, the stress is real! edited to ask: If you had your choice of programs, would you choose WGSS or Geography?- 41 replies

@turtleducks I was given a TAship with a tuition waiver and a stipend (I can't remember how much it was, but I was able to live on it at least). I only had to pay the fees, which amounted to about $800/semester, which I was able to pay in $200-something installments each month. -

I agree re: getting an M.A. My program wasn't awesome (I stayed at my undergrad school), but if I hadn't done that work I never would have figured out what I am interested in. It was extremely useful, and I'm glad I did it. Obvs you gotta find a funded program, but I think it's worth it (if you are unsuccessful this cycle, or course!). -
It's very difficult to say. I think I would prefer a Gender Studies program, just based on the trajectory my M.A. research took me; but I think I could do good work in any of the English programs I applied to as well. I mean, right now my preference is for whichever program wants to accept me.

Thanks!! It was one of the programs I applied to two years ago, but I decided not to reapply because the fit wasn't that great.
