I am currently first on the waitlist for University of Alabama's Masters in English--if anyone is not planning on attending, please, please decline because I would really like to attend!!

Omg this~  haha, because I know that's what I'll be doing once I have all the options on the table.

Finally received my rejection from CUNY. I am amazed at how this process works! I have an amazing fit/ feel where I got accepted. I tried to make a fit where there really wasn't one at the places where I was rejected. It is all about fit people!!! 

We had a very similar awful day and I just want to say I really empathize with you, if I understand correctly, waiting to hear back from 1-2 schools with no acceptances so far. It's awful and I wish it could just be done with already.

Did we ever get that "How important are rankings anyway?" thread up and running? Because I love Ole Miss so much and everything about their program just gels with me...but I feel like I should probably defer to more experienced voices in regards to how much weight I should give that.

Congratulations!! I hope your username is sincere, because I remember seeing the words "most snow on earth" in a news report this year.

Congratulations!!! You are on a roll! I think it's been discussed a bit on a few different threads. Overall, the consensus seems to be that the rankings don't mean much, and you should analyze each school holistically based on your needs. I'd also take a long, hard look at placement records.

Holy cow, wait. This applies to freelancing/writing/editing gigs as well, you think? I mean, there is no ambiguous wording, so of course it does, I just don't know why I didn't think of that. Thank you for posting this. I'm going to need to look through handbooks too, I guess.

There are a few ways around this.

Greyhound is $21-26 (depending on the departure time) one way on Sunday March 11. It has around 12 available times to leave from morning to evening.  Take SEPTA to Wilmington, lyft/uber from Wilmington to Newark.

The first option would cost $42-$52 for two people. The second would cost two independence passes ($13 each) and according to rates currently ($23) from the station to the college. 23+13+13= $49. Trains are far more comfortable than Greyhound.

There seem to be a lot of gradcafe success stories from people who are very glad they did they accepted the MA option (though I know this is touchy because of funding). Congratulations, whatever you decide :-)

I just want to jump in here to advocate for the importance of words like "intersectionality," especially in the case of "intersectionality." In fact, without intersectionality, concepts like feminism are not inclusive and actually isolate women of color, the LGBTQ+ community, etc. By making the move from just plain "feminism" to "intersectional feminism," these "certain types of people" are actually included in the conversation and welcomed into academic space rather than kept out. So, in some cases, what some might consider jargon is absolutely important and shouldn't be shrugged off as meaningless. 

Accepted to University of British Columbia! I’m so excited I have offers to choose from but they all have their plus and minuses and I am so gosh darn stressed out about choosing which one!

Are you...me? Are we...the same? This is exactly my experience/fear. When I was interloping in English classes during my MFA I could speak about the works we were studying in nonspecific terms, but then someone would say, "Oh yeah, like [insert name]'s theory of [word]" and I would nod and say "yeah, totally" and then google the reference as soon as I got home. If anyone sent you books/youtube videos to buff up theory pass them along. (Also, you name-dropping Saussure to make your point about imposter syndrome gave me imposter syndrome.)

That's awesome. Especially when you consider cost of living in Arkansas! Congrats again on you and your partner landing a gig together. Academia is a crapshoot, so that really is an achievement.

Waitlisted at Tufts—found out by calling the department administrative assistant. They said they sent out letters today. 

Wasn't me--I posted my Harvard acceptance in comp lit on the board when it happened (a few weeks ago). There's at least one other person here who was accepted for comp lit around the same time as well, but I know nothing about their English PhDs.

I bit the bullet & checked.. I got in! Word regarding funding is supposed to come in a few days, & hopefully that will also be good news. Wake Forest is admittedly at the bottom of my list, but it's so nice to have an acceptance under my belt.
