  1. I know, right? I was shocked when I got online this morning! Congratulations! Sounds like you have something special in your application--maybe your writing sample or personal statement. Congrats!! I think it's good for everyone to keep in mind how beneficial or detrimental this forum is to them personally. I'm kind of an obsessive person--I like having ALL the information, it makes me feel in control--but a lot of people find the overload overwhelming and that's no good. So everybody share away, but remember self care
  2. I retook the GRE in November, prior to this application cycle; all things considered it went well, my scores increased 6pts on verbal and 4 pts on quant w/ a .5 increase in AW. Personally, I basically relearned math w/ Khan Academy videos, which was good, but I overlooked the fact that a majority of GRE math questions are about properties, not actual computation; just keep that in mind! Come out to Chicago! Friendly Midwestern city with a decent cost of living for such a great place. Lol. It's not a bad thing! We all have our application - checking routines. If I were on a radically different time zone I'd do the same.
  3. Lol, I had the exact same freakout with ApplyWeb. I log on and it says I have one unsubmitted app--it's years old, but I always forget and think I didn't end up sending in one of my PhD apps.
  4. You KILLED the GRE! Wow, congratulations. That's awesome. Hope you pick the department of your dreams!
  5. Seconded; I'd love to hear what kind of stats are getting acceptances this early!
  6. I'm so happy for you! Best of luck with your interview, I hope it goes well Hey! We're applying to 5(!!) of the same schools (UWM, UMAA, UPenn, NW, IUB). Sounds like you and I have quite similar applications too, with different research areas though; I'm more into sociology of health and illness/social epidemiology, gender, and race (w a focus on scientific racism). My GRE scores were 166V, 151Q, and 4.5AW. [I f*cking hate the AW tasks. If there is ANYTHING I'm confident about, it's my writing, and I resent being graded by a robot. Lol]. I have more TA experience rather than RA experience (in your case). I'm finishing up a MA right now with a 4.0 grad GPA, but only a 3.63 undergrad GPA (psych major). I didn't come from a prestigious undergrad either--in fact I started at the community college. No publications for me either, although I was an editor for something that did just get published. Congratulations on your recovery--nothing can mess up a school year quite like a bout of illness like that, and it definitely happens. It seems like you are a super dedicated applicant--I bet it shows on your applications! Fingers crossed for both of us -- maybe we'll end up at the same place! What do you think their hiring timeline will be like? Post interview, I mean. Some employers do two rounds of interviews and some take 1-3 weeks to make a decision on hiring. I'd go to the interview as normal, and unless they ask something specific about your future plans or something, I'd not volunteer the info. Let the cards fall where they may. If they offer it to you and you still haven't heard, well, cross that bridge when you come to it.
  7. Such a great idea. Doing that right now. I haaaaaate it. At least one of my apps is "ready for review", which I hate less, but still. If I could get some news, that would be amazing.
  8. I'd kill to see something other than "submitted" right now. I keep getting emails soliciting my application from Northeastern, but they come in on my phone hella early in the morning, so my sleepy brain thinks it's Northwestern and I end up jumping out of my skin thinking I have news from them--no such luck.
  9. The variability in notification across schools is killing me. I feel like individually checking all 6 application portals is just a part of my morning routine now--coffee, then obsessively checking the results page here, then logging in to every portal and checking on my app. Decisions one way or another are really going to mess up my mornings. Lol
  10. Fingers crossed!
  11. I'm still hoping to get one of those UChi interviews. Entirely understand. I feel like you still have a shot at getting one. There are also the schools that interview a few people and accept others without an interview, so hold onto that thought too!
  12. Yeah. I feel like I'm strongest for UPenn and Northwestern, followed by IUB and UWM. UMichigan is like my dream because of their social epidemiology program(s) but you know, #1. Oh well.
  13. No worries guys! I believe in y'all Congrats!! I feel like they may still send a few invites out, since they started on a Thursday; I'm holding tight until about Tuesday or Wednesday before I stop hoping for an email from them. That being said, my fit is pretty dubious at UChicago, so it's not exactly a shock if I don't get an interview.
  14. Congrats! Someone last season posted a thread talking about a UChicago interview they had (it went badly according to that poster, but they got in regardless). Here are a few threads: and and Congrats! Notre Dame funds its admits; I considered applying but ultimately didn't. I've heard good things about their program.
  15. SO MANY INTERVIEWS ALREADY. Every day that passes I realize how difficult it is to get into these schools lol. I really need to commit to a plan B, as little as I want to think about not getting in. Can't believe some schools are already admitting. People, come and claim your interviews and acceptances!
  16. Oh, that sucks I heard similar about UWM, although I also heard there have been some improvements. It sucks that these are considerations for choosing programs :/
  17. Really? What have you heard, if you don't mind? I applied to University of Chicago despite my advisor's warning that the program is a bit conservative. That may be a mistake on my part, since idk if I have any kind of fit there, but oh well. Water under the bridge at this point. Looooove stats. It's weird, because I get great grades in math classes, but the particular way the quant section asks questions really messes with me.
  18. Retaking the GRE is HELL. I did manage to improve my scores a lil, but good Lord. Months of relearning algebra and memorizing the formulas only to get basically 100% 'properties' questions with no actual computation. The first quant section came up and I'm relatively sure I missed at least 50% of them. Cleared that section and just sat in the chair and thought about my life for a moment. Oh, well.
  19. I'm happy that UWM allowed the submission of an additional writing sample. I submitted a really great social epidemiology paper to them as well as my regular writing sample. That being said, I'm still a rookie for the topic, so who knows. It's a great field. I really like social epidemiology particularly, which makes Michigan a dream, but lol, #1 ranked...
  20. This is so true, and I'm trying to hold onto that thought! Fingers crossed that I get to be one of the motivation/experience admits, then, since my scores are far from perfect. Oh, well. I am *so* ready to start hearing about everybody's results. If I don't get in, at least I'll get to see some of you get in. I KNOW, that 160 mark is killer. I retook it after subpar scores when I took it during undergrad, but didn't improve nearly to that 160 mark. 166V, 151Q (from a 162V and a 147Q).. You and I both for UWM and UM! Sociology of health is my jam too. No publications here, but I have some brief RA and TA experience with good LORS (including from my sociology statistics professor, who hopefully vouched for my ~~wacky excellent~~ statistics skills). SOPs are my downfall, and I'm very much hoping committees will review my writing sample even if they're iffy on my SOP; the writing sample is probably the strongest part of all of my applications.
  21. So many of us are applying to the same schools! I keep on seeing University of Chicago / University of Pennsylvania / Indiana Bloomington / UWM (of course). I'll be frank with you guys. I am NOT a fan of y'all having better quant scores than I do. It really is the luck of the draw though. We'll see. I feel like my application is a particularly mixed bag.
  22. Holy holy. So many applications! At least mine are turned in. I hated sitting and revising, and revising, and revising... Ugh. Now, if I could just get the accept/reject part out of the way.
  23. I feel like decisions are going to take extra long this year though. In the soc '18 applicants thread somebody said UWM had 250+ applicants--and if they got that many, I'm sure other schools got swamped too. Unfortunate, since I definitely feel like my chances are flying away from me here. I'd LOVE to hear early, but I doubt it.
  24. How are we all feeling about our applications? Anyone feeling confident, or are we all balls of anxiety? Personally, I'm already being fatalistic.
  25. Congrats on the first batch getting done! I decided to do all of mine at once so I am fiiiinally done! I was also told to cast a wide net. My research areas are super wide, and my background is kind of varied, so I have room to expand in most programs. Positive thoughts coming your way. I work in service at the moment (those bills, y'all) and know exactly how it goes. Let us all know when you get your things submitted! Everybody's on the same team here.
