Re-awakening this thread: Cutting straight to the chase here to give you my parameters and questions. - Looking for a single or studio (no significant other or kids, holla y'all). - Max budget = $1,300 /month - Car is essentially hot garbage- need to be bikeable or close to streetcar to get Tulane downtown campus (SOPH). 1) Has anyone used an agent to find a place to live? I have been reached out to a few from reddit and I am cautious about their intentions... Any feedback on this? 2) I recently went down to look at areas, and really liked the area around Magazine/Garden district, Mid-city, and CBD. Any grad students that can speak to what areas have worked/not worked for them? I know I will be working a bagillion hours a week, but I am reasonably social and could dig on some local bars and coffee joints. Which of the areas mentioned or not mentioned might be the best fit? (plzz don't say Bourbon street because I know that's a lie). Thanks, see you guys soon.

Just wrapped a skype interview for PhD with Colorado. How long do people typically wait on a decision following these types of deals? They said two weeks, but I know I would die of anticipation with that kind of timeline...

Hello all! I am considering finishing my PhD training in epidemiology at CU's School of Public Health this fall 2018, and have a few questions to ask those either living in Denver on a grad student budget, or have previously. 1) Generally speaking, have you had financial difficulties even with a stipend and tuition remission etc? No need to get too personal if you feel otherwise, but I just worry about that in places like Denver it'd be more difficult than some of the other cities I am considering. 2) In a quick glance, it seems like renting an apartment in downtown or in reach will be costly and difficult to secure. Is that completely true? Again, I haven't looked on zillow etc., but I also don't know the desirable areas for my kind of grad student budget (1BR ~ $1,200 /mo give or take some) and someone without a car (coming from far away so I am leaving it behind). I'll have a bike and perfectly capable legs and am willing to spend more on a housing budget to not live in suburbia 3)I know it sounds silly, but what do you guys do? While it is far more intriguing than anywhere I've lived or currently live, I am always curious to hear the answer from grad students with similar workloads about how they spend their free time. Thanks!

My epi people: Why might I STILL have nothing after all these admits etc. from Harvard, Yale, Brown, Columbia? I had seemingly interested POI's at each and generally competitive stats + 2 first author/5 co-authorships. Why would this happen without even notification of waitlist or rejection, if that's the case? I am fighting to not feel disrespected by even the courtesy of communication...are there rational causes behind this?

@pkv I am curious about your specialty or focus? I applied to most of the same programs (Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown), but have zero notification of admit/reject/WL.

Can we agree to stop having people post questions on the results? It's rather annoying to check results and see "other" for someone just airing their concerns.

Ex-Birminghamster here. I finished undergrad at BSC (tiny liberal arts campus up the road), and just wrapped my master's at UAB. In those 6 years, I had qualitatively completely different experiences, and lived in almost every borough. Overall, I loved it and miss it dearly, but it is not for the faint of heart (or those opposed/indifferent to college football and heat). Pros: - Truly and up and coming community and scene. When I moved there in 2011, it still sat in the ashes of its steel booming past. In just the time of my undergrad, it was quickly becoming a destination for tech talent, entrepreneurs, and massive revitalization efforts downtown (though I have some ambivalence about how well some of those have come off). If you are an artist, graphic designer, or general punk, there's a big scene for you growing in Crestwood, Avondale, Downtown, and Highlands. - Breweries and BBQ! I heard once that B'ham has the most BBQ per acre of any area in the US (fact check me if you wish), and that we have an outrageously awesome brewery scene. I really liked Trimtab and Good People, but Avondale, Ghost Train and others are solid and often where people spend entire Saturday afternoons. Oh and Regions Field/Railroad Park (across the street from Good People) is a lovely place to find something to do in the heart of the city with some greenery around you. OH and there are some really cool speakeasy/datenight type bars I fell in love with (and drank my grad school woes away in often) called Collins Bar and the Atomic Lounge. Take my word and check them out. Tell Mike or Phil at Collins that I sent you. - Cost-effective to live in some of the trendiest areas. I was a mere barista, so I couldn't afford it, but most of the new or newish developments with chic apartments in the downtown area (close to UAB and most things to do) compare very favorably to big cities elsewhere like Nashville and Atlanta. In my hunts, I honestly just used Zillow or Trulia to find good deals and it worked out well. - A few hours to the beach, 2 hours to Atlanta, 2 hours to Nashville. Cons: - Somewhat subjective here, but man did it feel small at times. BSC was a small school, but even in the greater Birmingham area, I started to settle in and not meet many new people as often as I would've liked. - HOLY F@CK transportation. Virtually zero public transit. Seriously the buses seem to run for their own edification. Zyp Bikesharing program is pretty neat and is gaining popularity, but with such a hilly and poorly engineered city scheme, it's also not for the faint of heart. I biked out of necessity for a month while I lived in Highlands (probably the most bikeable area outside downtown proper) and was mostly miserable. You essentially must have a car or be wed to someone with one. - Tha Heat. Prepare yourself if you haven't spent any time in the south during the summer... or the "fall" or the "spring" because by late February, some days are already 82... - I have heard about crime problems, BUT, I never experienced it ever. I worked downtown, and aside from a few homeless wanderers, never felt unsafe walking alone. Just be a smart grad student and you should be ok Either: - Bham itself is fairly blue and liberal, but Alabama is heavvvily conservative. A democrat only beat Roy Moore, who broke federal laws trying to put 10 commandments back in school and is accused of sexually assaulting or abusing many young girls, by 1 point in December... That will either inspire you or scare you. Your decision. - As I have said, I lived in almost every nook and crany of the 205, so just ask about specifics so I can log off here and stop wasting people's time! HMU guys!

Hello! I just received my official admit letter from OSU in the epidemiology program and I am stoked to hear more about Corvallis (and the news of course!). I hope to possibly visit this spring, but am not sure if I can afford it all the way from Mississippi Anyway, I wanted to accomplish 3 things with this post, so that if I could not get out before decision deadline I could: 1) Re-liven the thread in hopes that anyone in my position can connect as a community to discuss things. 2) Know what the downtown scene is like? Is there any kind of bar/brewery/pub scene that young people frequent outside fraternity parties? I've lived in smallish towns and don't necessarily fear that-- I can mostly be happy with bikeable/walkable landscapes, good coffee, and the occasional nights out. 3) See what the transportation scene is like, following from my last questions. I would definitely be junking my volvo on the move out there, so I am hoping the transit is effective and somewhat trustworthy/safe? I don't mind paying extra to live closer to downtown and just biking as well (as that seems mostly embraced on the admissions site). Thanks! Let me know if any of this is unclear, or certainly if anyone else has heard back from OSU recently as well!

Rejected by UNC even though PI said she really "wanted to get me involved" Also, has anyone else checked portal at Oregon State for admittance without email notification or funding?

@HIVEpiHopeful I sent out a barrage of emails to coordinators, and from UNC Epi received: "Thank you for reaching out. Some of the program areas conduct Skype or phone interviews with applicants, but not all do. I can tell you that we are still in the midst of reviewing applications and making admission decisions. We enter decisions as they are made, but many program areas wait to make some of their decisions until they have had a chance to review the entire pool of applicants. We strive to all admissions decisions entered by March 1st and I foresee no reason why that would not be the case this year." [note that I am applying for Chronic/CVD epi so infectious may be different] Cheers to agonizing for many more days together!

For any Brown Epi Folk: "Good morning [redacted], I hope this email finds you well. We haven't sent out any decisions but expect to by the end of the month. Your application is currently under review. If you have any questions, please let me know." Received this morning. At least we know it won't be past this month...

For those curious about Yale, I just received this (somewhat off-putting and blunt) email from the program coordinator for Chronic Disease Epi: "Thank you for contacting me.The applicants being interviewed have been contacted.I do not know anything else about your status at this time." Anyone else see that as "sorry, better luck next year?" I can handle full honesty.

Similarly, I have not heard from your list of un-notified school choices... I am contacting a couple of coordinators that I know decently, however. Anyone have a sort of protocol for going about this without sounding pushy?

Recommended as a semi-finalist for a research grant in the Netherlands!!!!! Congrats to all other acceptances and to those without: KEEP APPLYING! KEEP PUTTING IN WORK. The next application cycle is only around 8 months away... P.S. Any other Dutch semi's on here? Do we know if they will interview or when they've notified in the past? I have an eager PI at my future PhD who will need a decision in March for her program.

Thanks for the input. It appears that it's quite a mixed bag even within institutions whether or not they conduct them. One coordinator even said they go case-by-case. Ok well essentially to pin my second question down, I guess it would be: If no interview by now, given application to programs who've been documented here and elsewhere to have sent out invites for them, should that be viewed positively or negatively or is it still somehow too early to determine? I hope that clarifies my second question a bit.

Anyone's honest thoughts on no interviews regarding admission? What might no contact at schools (since before app deadlines) such that I see have been contacting some of you imply on official word-- guaranteed wait-list? Or is it worse, in that it's impossible to know...?

Thanks!! Right so I am less interested in my dad's opinion than the potential semi-truth it reveals. But, it seems like that may be wrong and I really have the position despite not immediately "committing." Hopefully my call with POI this afternoon will clear up a bunch!
