  1. Hey folks, not quite History of Science (I did apply to Harvard due to wanting in on the STS minor/concentration over at Kennedy), but I'm sort of treading the line between Media Studies and STS, and have been accepted at RPI's STS program. I know it'll work well for me, but I had kind of developed hopes of an Ivy in the process of applying. I know the details about the program from an on-paper perspective, but curious if anyone's got some more insider-info on it, how it stacks up in the world of Science Studies and its various related fields and such. Thanks guys, all best.
  2. @deshypothequiez Yeah I figured out how to get it there finally haha I assumed as much with Northwestern, probably not a good fit on research, I wasn't very insistent on matching my interests to profs, more interested in the program overall, if that makes sense. As to NYU MCC haven't heard anything. I saw that responses went out in Late February last year and there were some interviews last year too, and that those came out right around now. I'm not sure if they always have interviews though. That's actually something I wonder about these programs overall, which ones definitely have interview phase vs which ones just go to decisions. Cheers!
  3. Hey all, just curious if anyone is applying to same programs as me, below find the current state of affairs. I am very tempted by RPI STS for a number of reasons including convenience, the ivies seem to be dropping me like I'm hot, but not too surprised there. Glad to hear so many people are getting where they want to be. Cheers!
  4. I'm just curious about my list of programs going forward into the acceptance/rejection period. What would you hope for? Just curious generally what people think of this list and what the strengths and weaknesses are, where I can expect problems and where there might be hope. It will likely appear in my signature too, but just in case here's my scorecard currently: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute STS PhD (Accepted) -heading to campus for visit Feb 27th MIT HASTS PhD (Likely Rejected) Northwestern MTS PhD (Likely Rejected) UC Santa Cruz Hist. of Consciousness PhD (Likely Rejected) Cornell STS PhD (Rejected) Berkeley Rhetoric PhD (Pending) NYU Media Culture Communication PhD (Pending) Brown Modern Culture and Media PhD (Pending) Harvard History of Science w/STS PhD (Pending) Boston University Emerging Media Studies PhD (Pending) University of Toronto History and Philosophy of Science and Technology Institute PhD (Pending) University of Texas Austin Media Studies PhD (Pending) Oxford DPhil in Information, Communication and the Social Sciences (Pending) Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone hearing back? I'm trying to decide on whether RPI would be Theory-friendly enough my tastes.
  5. Yep, applied there as well, looks like we'll be hearing this week or early next. I'm not expecting it, but you never know! Might be one of the lucky few.
  6. So at this point if we haven't heard, its likely a reject? Also, sorry, new here, how do I make those cool little accept/reject color-coded things at the bottom? cheers!
  7. Hey I applied to MTS this year, saw there were two folks who got interview responses on the board and yeah there was something where one of them was recommended to the program from Communications, so maybe there's still some movement happening. I saw previous years it was usually around this week and next that interview stuff went out, so I've still got my fingers crossed, you never know! People turn offers down and spots open. I did officially get the notice from HASTS at MIT that interviews already went out and I was not part of the group, idk if you applied there. Keep us posted!
  8. Seeing some posts on the board about interviews and curious how many people have gotten a response from them in any capacity. I know they have two rounds with the interviews and usually go through about 10-15 people before narrowing down to somewhere around 5 people, so no doubt this program is stretch for most. It's my first pick due to the option of specifically studying National Security and Technology, and in particular for Jennifer Light, I'm way into cold war tech research. In any case, just sending up a flare to see what comes back. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. All best! MIT History Anthropology and Science Technology and Society Fall 2018
  9. I'm doing this too, heading into STS and History of Science programs and applied to a few Theory-focused spots like Brown MCM and Berkeley Rhetoric, looking to study tech and national security stuff. In any case, I've complied some books that I'm trying to crank through rn and a few would fit your bill I think (tho admittedly I'm not an anthro guy so apologies if these are more in my stated wheelhouse): Mushroom at the end of the world by Anna Tsing (this is anthro so I figure it would definitely fit) ExtraStateCraft by Keller Easterling (already read this, amazing!! but kinda Design/Architecture by trade tho there's plenty in there for everyone!) Molecular Red and General Intellects by McKenzie Wark (def media theory, but also just packed full of cool stuff for everyone) Code and Clay by Shannon Mattern (sorry I guess I'm listing mostly media theory stuff but I promise this one's a winner) The Rule of Logistics by Jesse Lacavalier (about Walmart's tech system, crazy stuff) Anyway, I'm just eager to share book suggestions, apologies again if these are outside of your area. All best and enjoy the waiting game!!.... meh the waiting game is boring lets play hungry hungry hippos!
