  1. Stanford just emailed with the best news I could imagine and I am bawling. This is the last thing I ever expected and I was not prepared to have to make such tough choices.
  2. Just received a totally unexpected admit from the University of Michigan and am over the moon. Are there any other Michigan applicants lurking here?
  3. Oh, good to know! In past years it looked like people had found out through the portal before ever receiving an email so I was obsessively checking it. Thanks for your input!
  4. Thanks! Guess I can stop frantically checking the portal every few hours, at least for a day or two.
  5. Congrats @VladL and @Guest345 on the Vandy admits! That school has a special place in my heart and I would have applied in a heartbeat if I jived more with the people they have doing gender history. You'll love Nashville!
  6. Sure, why not? "Dear Dobby'sSocks, After a consultation with the program and after a thorough evaluation of your credentials by The Graduate School, I regret to inform you that you have been denied admission for graduate study at Northwestern University. Because your interest in the University is deeply appreciated, this decision is not easy to convey. Though your plans cannot be accommodated at Northwestern University, the faculty and administrators of The Graduate School respect your intellectual ambition and wish you success in attaining your goal of advanced study."
  7. I don't have another rejection to compare it to yet, but the claim that they "respect my intellectual ambition" kind of rubbed me the wrong way.
  8. @Ragu No worries—it's less of an actual disappointment than a blow to my ego. And yes, it was on the ApplyWeb site where the "Print Receipt"/"View Checklist" buttons are. A new one reading "View Your Decision Letter" appeared. Hopefully the fact that yours isn't there yet is a good sign!
  9. Randomly checked the portal for Northwestern and saw my decision letter had been posted—a rejection, which I was expecting due to the program only being a mediocre fit and after hearing last year's incoming cohort was oversaturated with Americanists. Best of luck to others who applied!
  10. Based on @FishNerd‘a post, this might vary somewhat by discipline. I’ve only heard back from one program so far (I applied for History PhDs), but I received an email from my POI despite having never been in contact with them.
  11. Can't offer any useful info, but am curious about this as well. If last year's results are any indication, acceptances should start going out this week. But they could also be operating on a totally different timetable this year so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  12. A few years ago the department at my school made shirts that said “Historians do it Chicago Style.”
  13. First off, can totally relate. I've been checking the results page 5+ times a day and following the advice I saw somewhere on the "Waiting it Out" forums that the best way to pass the time is with frequent glasses of wine. I put Tracey Deutsch as my POI, although I was initially drawn to the school because of Elaine Tyler May. (Her Homeward Bound is what first made me fall in love with history.) As a native Midwesterner, this resonates with me. Don't apologize for being passionate about the school/city! UMN was already one of my top picks, but your enthusiasm (and the discovery that there's a real place called Dinkytown) made me even more excited about the possibility of attending. Now to figure out how to make living in the area affordable...
  14. Just wanted to offer some insight as one of the two who posted a UMN acceptance...Got the email from DGS this morning along with a congratulatory message from my POI. The main email stated that admission was not yet official and that the department will not vote on the adcom's recommendations until "next week"; I only received a notification because I am being nominated for additional fellowships and they need some supplementary material from me. Don't fret, @khigh! It doesn't sound like the official admits will be announced for about another week. Rooting for you!
