  1. Well, I think research fit should weigh more in your decision. If you think you are more interested in the research project at Georgia Tech, you should consider it more seriously. Studying in Atlanta doesn't mean you will be stuck in there after finishing school. I am pretty sure Georgia Tech is well regarded in many Silicon valley companies as well. What is your area, by the way? Some schools may be particularly strong in some research areas. Also you need to consider the funding provided by these schools. I think you need to make sure you won't suffer economical problems. LA is an expensive city, but the stipend you will receive from UCLA is probably higher to compensate for that. As far as I know, UCLA and UIUC waive both the tuition and extra fees for RA and TAs, but Georgia Tech waives only the tuition. Students still have to pay the fees, which amounts to approx. $1200 per semester. Prestige of the advisor is certainly a plus, but I think younger professors are more ambitious in their research and this is more important. As for the security, campus of Gatech is pretty safe. But there is a close neighborhood called Home Park, where some armed robberies have occurred recently. Campus police department takes this issue very seriously and increased its patrols in the area. They offer free rides to students at night as well. Anyway, all schools are very prestigious. You shouldn't worry about the school prestige too much when making a decision between these schools.
  2. Hi, I thought it might be good to meet each other and discuss the questions we may have. I am admitted to Georgia Tech ECE PhD program for fall 2018.
  3. I have received an admission offer together with a research assistantship offer in my POI's lab. The email came from graduate affairs office a few days ago. Prior to this email I have contacted my POI for some questions and etc. He didn't write to me after the offer (the offer letter came from graduate affairs office with the POI in CC). Do you think I should still write a thank you email to Poi for the financial aid offer? I don't want to sound like I am accepting the offer. However, I also don't want to give the impression that I don't care about the offer, or that the school is not my top choice. Deadline for responding to the offer is explicitly stated in the email as April 15. But I still fear that my POI will think bad of me if I wait for a month to accept the offer without writing anything to him in the meantime. I still didn't hear back from any other school.
  4. Thank you for the responses. Sorry I forgot to mention, the department is Electrical and Computer engineering. Graduate student handbook says that renewal of GRA positions depends on the academic success of the student and availability of funds. I will be working in the lab of my POI as a research assistant. I won't be able to continue my studies without funding therefore I got worried when I saw that this offer covers only the first year. I agree it is best to ask the graduate program coordinator about this renewal process. Thanks again!
  5. I have received a research assistantship offer from Georgia Tech. The letter States that the offer covers the first year (fall 18, spring 19, summer 19). My question is whether it is common practice for offers to cover only the first year. Do they usually renew the offer each year? Or should I be worried that they might require me to pay tuition in the subsequent years. Thanks
  6. I saw that some people did interviews over the previous week. Congratulations! Would you please share your interview experience, and your intended field of study? I haven't heard anything so far, I hope they haven't sent all interview invitations yet
  7. I received an interview invitation from Princeton today. My department is EE. The prof. who sent the email mentions that he and his colleagues are impressed by my credentials and they do Skype interviews with the shortlisted applicants to better understand the alignments of interests. At the end of the email he says that I may also be contacted by his other colleagues. do you think he is specifically interested in taking me as his student or he interviews me because he is part of the graduate admission committee? I am asking because I didn't mention his name on my sop, but I know that profs not mentioned in sop can contact you as well. I would like to know so that I can act accordingly during the interview Thanks
