  1. Was invited to an interview, but the POI's websites are a little outdated (3 years). Is it appropriate to ask directly for an updated CV? If so, how would you frame it? Is it appropriate to contact the POI's students or colleagues about their work related to the POI? If so, how would you frame it? If the POI signs off on the email with "First name (shortened) + Last name," is it okay to address them by their first name? Mainly want to save time by doing the homework instead of spending precious interview time to ask a question that can be answered by just reading a CV. Also scared of being that person who has the POI repeat basic info about themselves. Thoughts?
  2. 1. Thoughts on asking a POI for an updated copy of their CV in an email? I was invited to an interview and want to knock a few of my questions out of the way so I don't waste time asking them about stuff on their CV 2. If the POI signs off an email with First name (shortened) + Last name, do you refer to them in your first communication as Dr. Last name or their first name shortened?
  3. Someone was just invited to Columbia Teacher's College -- who was your POI? Please PM me!
  4. The second interview (the first on Jan 14/15) is in a week...I can't confirm that all invites have gone out because I didn't call them, but I personally assume rejection for any school that has their interview day in 2 weeks from the day that I'm wondering about it. FTR, I was told by someone in the program that invites, went out late December.
  5. Not a specific one, in my experience. Specific schedule was during orientation, day-of the interview.
  6. Differs per school. To the schools I've interviewed in, and all but one that I will be interviewing in, yeah -- more than one faculty that isn't my POI. Up to four extra 1 on 1 interviews. Yes, I looked up their research too, but obviously not much in depth unless there was overlap. Basically just their webpage bios. If there was some overlap, skimming their CV and their article abstracts. Yeah, agreed with it not mattering. Mostly it was repeats of what my POI already asked me. Generic shit. Agreed -- main thing is being able to talk about your own experience/interests/goals.
  7. The person who had the phone interview with you won't ask those questions again, but the other faculty will. In my experience, the other faculty ask generic canned questions that you'd find on a list, e.g., about overlap and why you applied, etc.
  8. For in-person interviews where there isn't a preliminary/phone interview, how much time (out of a standard 30 minutes) would you spend discussing research overlap vs personality/program fit? The personal statement/CV + the invite was probably enough to determine research overlap, right? I applied to several POIs but their interests aren't a good match with each other -- their interests are, however, a good fit with my experiences. Would you feel a need to justify the application to different POIs within the same program even more? Or is that already taken care of?
  9. Which programs are cut throat? I haven’t heard of one that is, yet
  10. Yes, it makes sense that it will still be 3-6 interviewing per professor. How does the answer to this question help you?
  11. School: Columbia University, Teachers College Program: Clinical Psychology PhD Type: Mass email. Interview Date: Feb 14
  12. How do you know this, do you work there? Do you know who has and who hasn't?
  13. Just reached out to the administrative assistant for the psych clinic at Duke, because no one ever picks up the 5 relevant numbers for the clinical PhD department, and Pamela does not return emails. The lady said she was "pretty sure'' that Duke professors extended invites, because the interview dates are in "early February." I'm going to count myself out.
  14. @kwilson28 @steph93 Counting myself out for WUSTL clinical. Their interview is on 2/1.
  15. I called Duke and especially Pamela Smith for info for a month now (maybe 10 times), and there's been no pickup for any of their numbers. Just sent them an email, but don't have my hopes up since Duke invited someone in early Jan.
  16. I see the utility of doing this, and am very tempted to do so. How do you respond if you receive invites to more than one program and have to turn down your fake "first choice" school?
  17. What about grad students? And if they never ask this? I've been to two interviews already, only one out of nine interviewers asked me this question, and it wasn't the person I applied to
  18. Let's say you're invited to a school that you would love to attend. A school you would love to attend because you think it's better than the other schools you were invited to -- not just any program that just accepts you. A school where you would instantly accept if they offered you admission, even before hearing back from other schools' decisions post-interview. How would you convey this information to them without seeming desperate? Would you even communicate this?
  19. More IMO. This person's starting from scratch, basically. With zero psych classes, they'll likely need to ace the Psych GRE, too.
  20. Even with perfect GREs, your chances are close to zero. "Helping people for a living" is a cliche for an application, and even if you write the most compelling narrative about how your personal experience and desire to help people led you to applying, you still won't have a shot. Talking about being in therapy is also shooting yourself in the foot for most applications. This is a ridiculously competitive job that you're applying for (unless you want to pay for a PsyD or masters). With zero psych knowledge, you will almost need a masters. Definitely look at Mitch's guide, his two mentees' (someone can dig it up, I'm sure), checkingmyemail's post, the Insider's Guide, and this forum. Need years before you have a shot.
  21. Oh, wow. That's super convenient. I wish all programs were as transparent. Thanks for the link.
  22. I see two people posting that UNC Chapel Hill extended all invites already -- can somebody upload a screenshot of what they see? Because I can't find that anywhere on my portal.
  23. For those of you who mention to POIs that you want to become a professor, what is the motivation behind wanting to become a TT professor? If your answer is to pursue a PhD in psychology to actually 'teach,' please explain why you need a PhD (vs any other degree) to do so. I personally want to become TT so I can start my own lab and research topics I care about. But I'm not sure if there are alternate, non-TT paths to accomplish my goal that I haven't heard of yet. Am I being naive with this as my singular reason?
